India’s MedTech market is expanding, and AI-enabled diagnostics could help extend specialist expertise into primary and secondary care. But growth forecasts, government targets and policy-supported projects are not proof that AI devices are already routine in clinics: scaling them depends on clinical evidence, usable health data, regulation, procurement and reimbursement.
How fast is India’s MedTech market growing?
India Brand Equity Foundation (IBEF), in a secondary-research summary dated 10 August 2026, estimates the market at US$15–16 billion and reports annual growth of nearly 12%. IBEF also describes India as Asia’s fourth-largest MedTech market. These are attributed estimates, not a direct measurement of AI-device sales or adoption.

Longer-term figures should be read as projections, not outcomes. The Government of India’s 2023 announcement of the National Medical Devices Policy cited an estimated US$11 billion market in 2020 and an expectation that it could reach US$50 billion by 2030. IBEF’s 2026 summary gives a broader projection range of US$30–50 billion within the decade. The figures come from different publications and time frames; neither establishes what the market will ultimately reach.
| Figure | What it represents | Attribution and date |
|---|---|---|
| US$15–16 billion | Estimated current Indian MedTech market | IBEF secondary-research summary, 10 August 2026 |
| Nearly 12% annually | Reported market growth rate | IBEF secondary-research summary, 10 August 2026 |
| US$11 billion in 2020 | Historical market estimate cited as a baseline | Government of India policy announcement, 2023 |
| US$50 billion by 2030 | Government expectation, not a confirmed result | Government of India policy announcement, 2023 |
| US$30–50 billion within the decade | Wider projection range reported by IBEF | IBEF secondary-research summary, 10 August 2026 |
These market-wide numbers do not establish a comparable India-specific AI-MedTech market size or adoption rate. They are best understood as context for an industry in which AI is one opportunity among several.

Which AI and next-generation applications matter most?
The Department of Pharmaceuticals’ 8 August 2026 summary of a MedTech knowledge paper covers AI in diagnostics, clinical decision support, operational efficiency and medical-device innovation. It expects AI-enabled diagnostics to be the first large-scale AI application in MedTech, potentially extending specialist expertise to primary and secondary care. That is an expectation, not a report of measured nationwide adoption.
| Application area | Potential role | What the cited sources establish |
|---|---|---|
| AI-enabled diagnostics | Support detection or interpretation and help bring specialist capabilities to primary and secondary care | The Department of Pharmaceuticals’ 2026 summary identifies diagnostics as the likely first large-scale AI application; it does not establish broad routine use. |
| Clinical decision support | Help clinicians assess information and support decisions during care | Included among the AI application areas in the 2026 government summary; nationwide adoption levels are not stated. |
| Operational efficiency | Apply AI to processes around healthcare delivery | Included as an application area in the same summary; specific deployments or measured effects are not stated. |
| Connected devices and remote diagnostics | Collect or transmit health information beyond a conventional in-person encounter | IBEF’s 2026 summary lists these as emerging opportunity areas, not proof of scaled deployment. |
| Software as a medical device and robotics | Deliver medical functions through software or automated equipment | IBEF lists these as opportunity categories; the summary does not quantify their adoption in Indian care settings. |
The Technology Development Board (TDB) also identifies AI-based devices for detecting and monitoring diseases among areas for medical-device development. This connects AI software to a broader industrial question: whether domestic firms can design, validate and manufacture higher-value devices, not just build algorithms.

What supports India’s MedTech ambitions?
Policy goals and planned support
The National Medical Devices Policy, 2023 frames sector development around access, affordability, quality, patient-centred care, prevention, security, research and innovation, and skilled manpower. Its stated approaches include regulatory streamlining, medical-device parks and shared infrastructure, research and innovation hubs, private investment, workforce development and export promotion. These are policy aims and strategies, not evidence that every intervention is complete or that its intended results have been achieved.

Reported projects and implementation figures
A 2026 Press Information Bureau (PIB) update provides examples of implementation with specific reporting dates. It says three medical-device parks are being developed in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh; Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh; and Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu. As of December 2025, 199 manufacturers had been allotted land and 34 units had started plant construction. Land allotment and construction starts indicate activity, but they do not mean all planned factories are operational.

The same update describes the Promotion of Research and Innovation in Pharma-MedTech (PRIP) scheme’s research and industry-academia components, seven Centres of Excellence, and 111 approved research projects as of November 2025. Those dated figures show public support for research and collaboration; they do not by themselves establish that projects have produced clinically adopted devices.
Moving beyond import-heavy, lower-complexity production
TDB says Indian manufacturing has historically concentrated on consumables and disposables, while its page reports 80–85% import dependence for complex and high-value medical devices. The page’s publication date is not specified, so the figure should be treated as TDB’s stated context, not as a newly measured 2026 rate. TDB’s inclusion of AI disease-detection and monitoring devices among development focus areas points to one possible route up the value chain, while underscoring the scale of the manufacturing challenge.

Why don’t promising pilots automatically become routine care?
The Department of Pharmaceuticals’ 8 August 2026 summary identifies fragmented health data, limited evidence, evolving regulation, and limited reimbursement and procurement pathways as barriers to routine adoption. Each can interrupt the path from a promising demonstration to dependable clinical use.
- Data fit: A tool needs data that are sufficiently usable for its intended setting and patient population. Fragmented health data can make development, validation and integration harder.
- Clinical evidence: A pilot or technical demonstration is not enough to show that a device is safe and useful for the patients and care level where it will be used. Evidence needs to support the specific clinical purpose and population.
- Lifecycle regulation: Medical-device oversight must address more than initial launch, particularly where AI systems can change or be updated. The government summary highlights the need for regulation that accounts for the product lifecycle.
- Workflow integration: A diagnostic or decision-support tool has to fit how clinicians receive information and act on it. A technically capable product may still fail to become routine if it does not work with clinical processes and relevant health data.
- Procurement and payment: Hospitals and health systems need a route to purchase and maintain devices, while reimbursement arrangements can affect whether their use is financially sustainable. The government summary describes both pathways as limited.
- Access and affordability: A device’s value depends partly on whether the intended facilities and patients can access it at a sustainable cost—not only on whether it performs in a controlled or limited setting.
For any proposed deployment, the practical test is therefore broader than whether the AI model works: is it validated for the intended population and care level, compatible with data and workflows, covered by an appropriate regulatory pathway, and supported by a credible purchasing and payment route?

What would count as durable progress?
India’s growth story combines a sizable and expanding MedTech market, policy efforts to support research and manufacturing, and a government expectation that AI-enabled diagnostics may be an early large-scale clinical use. The evidence cited here does not establish widespread AI adoption or a distinct India-specific AI-MedTech market value. Durable progress will be clearer when devices demonstrate safe, relevant clinical value in real care settings, can be procured and sustained affordably, and are supported by reliable domestic capabilities across design, validation and production.
