Indian equities extended their rebound on October 16, 2026, as heavy buying in information-technology shares lifted both benchmark indexes for a second straight session. The BSE Sensex closed at 74,729.27, up 413.66 points (0.56%), while the NSE Nifty finished at 23,146.15, higher by 148.80 points (0.65%). Technology stocks provided most of the momentum, led by Tech Mahindra after its quarterly profit jumped.

How the benchmarks performed on October 16

The Sensex touched an intraday high of 74,778.78 before settling 49.51 points below that level. The Nifty’s 148.80-point advance followed Thursday’s sharp rally, making Friday’s close the second consecutive gain.

Index October 16 close Daily move Weekly move
BSE Sensex 74,729.27 +413.66 points (+0.56%) +2,256.94 points (+3.11%)
NSE Nifty 23,146.15 +148.80 points (+0.65%) +625.7 points (+2.77%)

The weekly figures cover the week ending October 16, 2026. They show that the two-day recovery formed part of a broader weekly advance rather than an isolated one-session move.

IT shares supplied the day’s leadership

Gains were concentrated in large technology companies. The Nifty IT index rose 3.92%, and the BSE IT index gained 3.38%. By contrast, BSE MidCap Select fell 0.37% and BSE SmallCap Select declined 0.14%, indicating that broader market breadth did not match the strength of the main IT names.

Top Sensex IT movers

Company October 16 move Reported catalyst
Tech Mahindra +8.45% Consolidated net profit rose 32.74% year on year to Rs 1,585.6 crore for July–September FY27
Tata Consultancy Services +4.61% Quarterly-results and sector outlook buying
Infosys +4.55% Quarterly-results and sector outlook buying
HCLTech +1.08% Quarterly-results and sector outlook buying

Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra and Bajaj Finance were also listed among the major gainers. InterGlobe Aviation, Reliance Industries, Asian Paints and Bharat Electronics were among the session’s biggest laggards, limiting the extent of gains outside the technology-led group.

Why analysts said stocks moved higher

Analysts attributed the recovery primarily to earnings and management guidance. Vinod Nair, head of research at Geojit Investments Limited, said strong quarterly results and upbeat management commentary improved confidence in IT companies’ earnings outlook. He also pointed to softer crude oil and a strengthening rupee as additional supports for sentiment.

Rank #2

Ajit Mishra, senior vice-president for research at Religare Broking, said IT stocks had been the main driver of the rebound after their quarterly results, while other sectors provided support. He noted that the rupee’s rise against the US dollar offered some relief to domestic sentiment. These are analyst explanations for the move, not a separately measured breakdown of each index point.

External signals were supportive

  • Brent crude fell 0.30% to USD 105.6 per barrel, reducing one cost concern for the Indian economy.
  • Asian markets finished higher: South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng all ended in positive territory.
  • European markets were mostly higher, and US equities had closed up on Thursday.
  • Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 5,285.37 crore on Thursday, so the domestic rally came despite that recent selling pressure rather than because of a reported reversal in foreign flows.

SEBI changes the closing-auction and derivatives-settlement framework

The Securities and Exchange Board of India revised the Closing Auction Session after reviewing the existing framework, considering public comments, receiving recommendations from its Secondary Market Advisory Committee and discussing the matter with stock exchanges.

Market process Revised rule
Closing Auction Session for stocks and indexes 10-minute session from 3:30 pm to 3:40 pm on trading days
Regular stock and index-derivatives trading Generally continues until 3:45 pm
Expiring index-derivatives settlement Volume-weighted average price (VWAP) from the final 30 minutes of continuous trading, subject to the stated expiry exceptions

The 3:45 pm derivatives cutoff generally remains in place, but expiring index derivatives are treated separately under the revised settlement method. Traders and risk systems therefore need to distinguish the closing-auction clock from the VWAP window used for expiry settlement.

What the session says about market breadth

Friday’s data describe a selective rally, not a uniform advance across Indian shares. Large IT companies produced the strongest index-level contribution, while mid-cap and small-cap measures slipped. That split matters for investors interpreting the headline gains: a portfolio concentrated outside the major technology names could have performed differently from the Sensex or Nifty.

Tech Mahindra’s 32.74% profit increase supplied the clearest company-specific trigger. The simultaneous rises in TCS and Infosys, alongside the smaller HCLTech gain, suggest that buying extended across several large IT constituents rather than remaining confined to one earnings announcement.
