India’s benchmark stock indexes opened lower on Friday, October 16, 2026, as traders locked in gains after Thursday’s unusually strong rally. The BSE Sensex was down 113 points at 74,187 in early trade, while the 50-share NSE Nifty slipped 27.20 points to 22,967.15. Foreign-investor selling and a pullback in Reliance Industries outweighed gains in technology shares, led by Tech Mahindra.
What happened in early trading
The decline was measured rather than a broad collapse. Thursday’s advance had lifted the Sensex by 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to 74,315.61. The Nifty had gained 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to 22,997.35. After such a rapid one-day rise, some investors sold positions to secure profits, producing a softer opening the next morning.

Why the Sensex and Nifty were lower
Profit-taking after Thursday’s surge
Profit-taking occurs when investors sell part of a holding after its price has risen, turning an unrealised gain into a realised one. It is common after a sharp rally because traders may reduce risk, rebalance portfolios or withdraw cash without making a negative long-term judgment about equities. In this case, the selling followed Thursday’s large advance, so the lower open was consistent with short-term consolidation.
#1 Best Overall
Foreign institutional selling
Foreign Institutional Investors sold Indian equities worth Rs 5,285.37 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data cited by Press Trust of India. Large overseas flows can affect index-heavy shares and investor sentiment, particularly when selling arrives after a strong rebound.
Reliance Industries gave back some ground
Reliance Industries, which had gained 4% in the previous session, weakened in early trade. Because the company has a substantial influence on the benchmark indexes, its pullback added to the Sensex and Nifty’s opening losses. Other major laggards included Bajaj Finserv, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro, Asian Paints and State Bank of India.

Which shares were rising while the market fell?
Tech Mahindra led information technology
Tech Mahindra rose 5% after reporting a 32.74% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,585.6 crore for the July–September FY27 quarter. The earnings reaction helped information-technology shares outperform the broader market.

Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services also advanced. Bharti Airtel and Titan were among the other gainers, helping limit the effect of declines in several large industrial, consumer, financial and energy stocks.
Global and commodity signals
Brent crude was trading 0.61% lower at USD 105.3 per barrel. Lower oil prices can ease input and import-cost pressure for India, although a single early-session oil quote does not determine the direction of domestic shares.
Asian trading was generally positive: South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, the Shanghai SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng were higher. U.S. markets had also closed higher in the preceding session. The Associated Press described that recovery with the sentence, “U.S. stock indexes muscled higher following a shaky day of trading.”
Rank #4
| U.S. index (October 15 close) | Change | Closing level |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | Up 0.3% | 7,744.06 |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Up 1.1% | 52,177.69 |
| Nasdaq Composite | Up 0.1% | 26,713.03 |
The AP report said U.S. markets recovered after early concerns about the artificial-intelligence boom pressured equities across Asia, while strong U.S. corporate earnings supported the later rebound. The preceding U.S. session, on October 14, had been weaker: the S&P 500 fell 1.1%, the Dow declined 0.1% and the Nasdaq dropped 1.9% after hotter inflation increased expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes and weighed on AI-related shares.
How to interpret the move
- It was an opening move: early prices can change substantially before the closing bell.
- The immediate trigger was positioning: profit-taking followed a one-day rally of historic size for that session.
- Leadership was mixed: Reliance Industries and several heavyweight shares fell, while earnings-driven technology gains provided support.
- Flows mattered: the Rs 5,285.37 crore foreign-institution sale reported for Thursday added pressure.
- Context was not uniformly negative: most cited Asian indexes and U.S. markets were higher, and Brent crude eased.
Investors assessing whether the weakness represented a deeper change would need to watch the rest of the session, subsequent foreign flows, market breadth and whether heavyweight stocks recovered. The available figures do not provide a full-day close or a forecast.

What “profit-taking” means for individual investors
A profit-taking day does not automatically mean that the companies or indexes have become unattractive. It can simply reflect traders selling after a quick gain. Investors should distinguish between a short-term price reaction and a change in earnings, valuation, interest-rate expectations or business fundamentals. Index levels, institutional-flow data, oil prices and individual share moves are volatile and should always be read with their time and date.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did the Indian market fall for the entire day on October 16, 2026?
The reported figures cover early trading only. They show a lower opening, not the final Sensex or Nifty close.
What is profit-taking in stocks?
It is the sale of shares that have risen in value so investors can lock in gains. After a sharp rally, this can cause a temporary pullback without proving a long-term trend reversal.
