Indian shares rose in Wednesday early trading, with IT stocks leading after HCLTech forecast fiscal 2026 revenue growth of 2% to 5%—above analysts’ expectations, according to Reuters. The reaction was chiefly to the company’s forward outlook, not an across-the-board earnings beat: its quarterly revenue was slightly below estimates.

HCLTech’s fiscal 2026 revenue-growth forecast was the main company-specific catalyst in Reuters’s account of the session. The 2% to 5% outlook came in ahead of analyst expectations, encouraging investors despite quarterly revenue falling slightly short of estimates. HCLTech’s shares led the gains, while the IT sector outperformed the broader market.

That distinction matters when interpreting the headline. A forecast can be more encouraging than expected even when a recently reported revenue figure misses estimates. In this case, the reported market response aligned with the better-than-expected outlook; it does not establish that every part of HCLTech’s results exceeded forecasts.

Did HCLTech beat earnings expectations?
Not on every measure cited in the report. Reuters said quarterly revenue was slightly below estimates, while the fiscal 2026 revenue-growth guidance exceeded expectations. Those are different comparisons: one concerns reported quarterly performance against estimates, and the other concerns management’s outlook against analyst expectations.

JP Morgan analysts characterized the results and outlook favorably relative to peers, saying: “In a season with a succession of misses and underwhelming pre-tariff expectations, HCLTech’s in-line results and forecast is a rare feat and best among peers.” This is the analysts’ assessment, not an objective ranking of every IT company or proof that all HCLTech metrics beat estimates.

What the move does—and does not—show
The reported reaction suggests investors placed weight on the forward forecast: a better-than-expected growth outlook coincided with a sharp rise in HCLTech and a broader advance in IT shares. It does not, by itself, establish how the company will perform over the full fiscal year, whether the forecast will be met, or whether the gains persisted through the close. The cited figures capture one early-session snapshot.

Keep this Wednesday report separate from a different Reuters account of an Indian market session in October 2025. In that later report, HCLTech beat second-quarter revenue estimates and maintained its annual growth forecast; the Nifty IT index was reported up 0.6%. The main Reuters story identifies the move as occurring on a Wednesday and its identifier dates to 2025, but the syndicated page does not provide a dependable publication timestamp from which to confirm the exact calendar date.
