What happened in New Delhi on October 3?
The October 3 demonstration took place in New Delhi and was backed by the Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party and opposition groups. Reuters described it as the second day of demonstrations and reported that about 100 people removed security barricades before police detained several participants. The figure of about 100 refers to demonstrators, not detainees, and is an approximate count reported by Reuters. Police declined to comment on the number or identities of those detained. Reuters reporting republished by Internazionale and a CNA report covered the latest events.
Reuters reported protest slogans including “vote thief, leave the post” and “Gyanesh Kumar, step down.” These were protesters’ slogans, not established descriptions of the revision or its effects.
How did the October 2 protests differ?
The prior day’s events should not be conflated with the October 3 demonstration. The Associated Press reported that on October 2 police detained dozens of protesters and some opposition leaders who were heading to the barricaded Jantar Mantar site in New Delhi. AP also reported a Cockroach movement rally in Mumbai. Those reports concern October 2, not the October 3 detention count. Associated Press coverage summarized the earlier protests and the dispute over the voter-roll revision.

What is the Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls?
The Election Commission of India (ECI) describes SIR as a process to update electoral rolls and remove duplicate or ineligible entries while ensuring eligible voters are not left off the lists. A July 25, 2026, release from India’s Press Information Bureau, Ministry of Law and Justice, quoted the ECI’s stated objective: “As per the Press Note of the ECI, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls is being carried out in several phases across the country, with the objective of ensuring that the electoral rolls are accurate, up-to-date, and free of ineligible or duplicate entries, while ensuring that no eligible elector is left out.” The government release describes enumeration, publication of draft rolls, and a period for claims and objections before finalization.
The dispute is about how that goal is pursued and whether the process adequately protects eligible voters. Critics and opposition groups say documentation requirements and implementation could leave legitimate voters off the rolls. They also allege political bias and say the revision could benefit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s governing party. The Election Commission and governing party have rejected those allegations, according to AP; claims of partisan benefit remain disputed, not established fact.

What do the voter-list figures show—and not show?
AP reported that Election Commission data indicated voter lists in some regions could shrink by up to 30%. That is a possible decline in some regional lists, not a confirmed nationwide decrease and not a claim that every region experienced that reduction. The figure does not by itself establish how many eligible voters, if any, were wrongly removed. AP’s report provides the regional qualification and context.
