Indian-American Microsoft engineer Vaniya Agrawal leaves company after protesting alleged Israel military technology ties

Vaniya Agrawal, an Indian-American software engineer at Microsoft, protested the company’s reported cloud and artificial-intelligence relationships with Israeli state and military bodies during Microsoft’s 50th-anniversary event on April 4, 2025. She had already submitted her resignation, but Microsoft made her departure immediate after the protest. Calling the episode simply a resignation or a firing misses that sequence.

What happened to Vaniya Agrawal?

Agrawal was a Microsoft software engineer associated with the employee-led No Azure for Apartheid campaign. Reporting identified her as an engineer of Indian origin; her published resignation letter explains her reasons for leaving but does not establish additional biographical details. On April 4, 2025, at Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington, headquarters, she interrupted a question-and-answer session involving Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer and Satya Nadella. She challenged Microsoft over alleged use of its Azure cloud and AI services by Israel during the Israel-Gaza war. (Associated Press)

Agrawal had reportedly given two weeks’ notice and planned to leave on April 11. After the interruption, a manager told her that Microsoft was making her resignation effective immediately. The most accurate description is therefore: she resigned, then Microsoft ended her employment before her notice period concluded. News reports and the campaign often described the result as a firing or termination, but the available accounts do not support presenting it as a routine voluntary departure or as an unqualified firing without explaining the timeline. The anniversary-event protests were separate incidents

Agrawal was not the only employee to protest during the celebrations, and the two incidents should not be merged.

Agrawal’s interruption

Her action took place during the executive question-and-answer portion of the Redmond event. Her message focused on Microsoft’s alleged technology links to Israel’s military and on the company’s responsibility to examine how general-purpose services are used.

Ibtihal Aboussad’s interruption

Ibtihal Aboussad, a software engineer based at Microsoft’s Toronto office, interrupted a different part of the program while Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman was presenting. Reporting said HR told Aboussad she was being fired and that Microsoft accused her of deliberate disruption or misconduct. Both employees were associated with the same campaign, but their locations, targets and employment accounts were distinct. (TechCrunch; Windows Central; AP)

What Agrawal said in her resignation letter

In a letter published through No Azure for Apartheid, Agrawal argued that Microsoft’s technology had become part of the military-industrial complex and questioned who was being “empowered” by the company’s products. She said Azure cloud and AI services were being supplied to Israel and argued that Microsoft had a duty to investigate their use.

Those statements establish Agrawal’s beliefs and the basis for her protest; they are not, by themselves, independent findings about contracts, battlefield systems or civilian harm. She also argued that Microsoft’s public ethical commitments were inconsistent with its alleged military relationships. (Read the letter)

What technology relationship is being disputed?

Azure is Microsoft’s cloud-computing platform, providing computing, storage, networking, data and related services. Microsoft also offers AI models and tools. The controversy is about whether and how those general-purpose services were made available to Israeli government and military organizations, not about Azure being a weapon itself.

An Associated Press investigation reported that Israeli military units used AI models from Microsoft and OpenAI in systems connected to intelligence work and the selection of bombing targets during conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. AP-based coverage also cited a contract valued at approximately $133 million between Microsoft and Israel’s Ministry of Defense. The figure should not be read as proof that the entire contract was for weapons or targeting: the precise services, systems and operational chain remain central questions. Evidence that a cloud account or AI model was available to a military organization does not, on its own, prove that a particular Microsoft product caused a particular bombing or civilian death. Establishing that chain would require evidence about the customer, the system, the human decisions involved and the specific incident.

Microsoft’s response

Microsoft said employees have channels through which to raise concerns, but that protests cannot disrupt business operations or company events. The company has acknowledged business and technology relationships with Israel while rejecting the broader interpretation advanced by the campaign.

In a May 15, 2025 statement, Microsoft said an internal review found no evidence that its Azure or AI technologies had been used to harm people in Gaza. That is Microsoft’s own conclusion, not an independent exoneration. The statement should therefore be read alongside AP’s reporting and the activists’ allegations, rather than treated as a final resolution of the dispute. (Microsoft statement)

What is No Azure for Apartheid?

No Azure for Apartheid is an advocacy campaign associated with current and former Microsoft employees who oppose the company’s reported technology relationships with Israel. It published Agrawal’s letter and described Agrawal and Aboussad as organizers. The campaign has called for contracts involving the Israeli military to be ended or subjected to greater scrutiny.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its statements are advocacy material, useful for documenting the protesters’ demands and framing, but they are not independent verification of technology use or legal responsibility. (Campaign statement)

Why the wording matters

Short description What it leaves out
“Agrawal resigned” She had resigned, but Microsoft accelerated her final day after the protest.
“Microsoft fired Agrawal” Reports describe an immediate end to her employment, yet she had already submitted notice.
“Microsoft supports Israel” This is broader than the documented dispute over contracts and services supplied to Israeli state or military entities.
“Microsoft supplied AI weapons” The reporting concerns cloud and AI services; it does not establish that Microsoft built a weapon.

What remains unresolved

  • The exact scope of Microsoft’s reported Ministry of Defense contract and which services it covered.
  • Which Microsoft or OpenAI models were used in particular Israeli systems and how they contributed to intelligence or targeting decisions.
  • Whether any specific Microsoft service can be connected causally to a particular civilian harm.
  • How Microsoft’s internal review was conducted and what evidence it examined; the company’s public statement does not provide a full independent methodology.

The episode illustrates a broader accountability problem for technology companies: cloud infrastructure and general-purpose AI can be used in sensitive military settings without being designed as weapons. Employees, customers and the public therefore disagree over what disclosure, contract review and human-rights safeguards should be required.
