There is no single monthly cost for an Indian household: it depends on the PC’s average power draw at the wall and the marginal electricity rate on your bill. As a simple 30-day illustration, a PC averaging 50 W uses about 36 kWh; at 100 W, it uses about 72 kWh. Those are calculations, not claims about what a typical streaming PC consumes.
Estimate the PC’s monthly electricity use
Use this formula, with the PC’s average AC wall draw in watts:

Monthly kWh = average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30
For a steady draw over a 30-day month, every 30 W adds 21.6 kWh. The examples below show energy use, not a prediction of any particular computer’s draw.

For a different month length, replace 30 with the number of days. Actual power use can vary with the PC’s hardware, playback resolution, browser or app, GPU acceleration, encoding, background activity, and connected equipment.
Convert kWh into a rupee estimate
Multiply the added kWh by the applicable marginal energy charge on your household tariff. There is no single retail household rate for all of India: the state, DISCOM, domestic tariff category, consumption slab, and any subsidy or adjustment can affect the amount. The Ministry of Power says that “Electricity tariffs in India are determined by the Appropriate Electricity Regulatory Commissions under the Electricity Act, 2003.” The Ministry’s tariff information explains the regulatory context; your bill and DISCOM schedule are the relevant inputs for your estimate.

A labeled example: Lakshadweep FY 2026–27
Lakshadweep’s Department of Electricity lists normal domestic energy charges for FY 2026–27 as follows. This is an example for Lakshadweep, not a national rate. The schedule also lists a fixed charge of ₹25/kW/month.

Using those listed energy rates, 36 kWh corresponds to roughly ₹128–₹470 in added energy charges, while 72 kWh corresponds to roughly ₹256–₹940, depending on the applicable slab or slabs. These are illustrations based on the tariff schedule; actual bills can also reflect household consumption, subsidies, duties, fixed charges, and other applicable adjustments. If the PC pushes the household into a higher slab, part of its use may be charged at a higher marginal rate. Fixed charges do not necessarily rise in proportion to added kWh. Measure the power draw that matters
The power-supply unit’s wattage rating is not the PC’s actual average draw. For a useful estimate, measure AC power at the wall during representative stream playback, ideally over several hours. If you want to estimate the whole setup, include the monitor and any other equipment in the measurement; if the monitor will be switched off, measure accordingly.
A plug-in electricity usage monitor or watt meter can provide a wall-side reading. Choose one suitable for your outlet and rated load, and, if possible, use its accumulated kWh reading over a representative stream period. Older figures are not reliable substitutes for measuring your own setup: a historical ENERGY STAR stakeholder annex shows one desktop averaging about 57 W at idle, and a 2006-era Category A desktop specification used a 50 W idle requirement. These are dated examples involving particular test conditions, not current typical values or streaming-load estimates. ENERGY STAR stakeholder test annex
Get a more accurate estimate from your bill
- Find your electricity provider and tariff category. Check a recent bill for the DISCOM and domestic category, then use that provider’s current tariff schedule.
- Check how slabs and adjustments apply. Note the household’s current units, relevant slab rates, subsidy status, and any listed adjustments. Added PC use may span more than one slab.
- Measure the setup at the wall. Record average watts or accumulated kWh while the stream runs under normal conditions. Decide consistently whether the display and peripherals are included.
- Calculate the added use. If you measured watts, apply watts ÷ 1,000 × hours used. For continuous use over 30 days, that is watts ÷ 1,000 × 720.
- Apply the applicable marginal rate. If the extra units cross a slab boundary, calculate the units in each slab separately. Treat fixed charges and other bill items according to the tariff rather than assuming they scale with kWh.
For comparing two PCs or setups, measure their average wall draw under the same playback conditions, include the same equipment in both readings, and apply the same household tariff.
