India beat Pakistan 4–3 in the men’s Asian Games semi-final in Kakamigahara on October 1, 2026, with Abhishek scoring the winner in the final minute. The close finish revived the tension and memories associated with one of hockey’s most storied rivalries, even as it offered no proof that the teams’ broader fortunes have changed.
India beat Pakistan 4–3 in the Asian Games semi-final
The match reached 3–3 before Abhishek broke the tie in the final minute. The International Hockey Federation (FIH) confirmed the score and late winner in its October 3 tournament report. The result sent India through from the semi-final; the report also placed the match in the context of India’s Asian Games campaign.

A goal so late, with the teams level, made this more than another entry in the fixture list. It brought back the sense that India–Pakistan matches could turn on a moment under intense pressure. One close semi-final, however, cannot by itself reverse a longer run of results or establish a new competitive balance.

How the recent record compares with the rivalry’s past
Hindustan Times reported that India had not lost to Pakistan in a decade and had won 19 of 22 meetings since the 2016 South Asian Games final, with two draws and one no-result. That is a period-specific tally from the newspaper’s 2026 feature, not a complete record of every India–Pakistan match.

The longer history includes high-stakes contests in which the teams were closely matched. In the 1975 World Cup final, played on March 15, India beat Pakistan 2–1. The FIH’s official match record confirms the final score. The federation cautions that its digitised head-to-head data for 2012 and earlier is still being compiled, so its current head-to-head totals should not be treated as an all-time series record.
Rivalry on the pitch, friendship off it
Former players’ recollections in the Hindustan Times feature describe a contrast between fierce competition during matches and respect or friendship away from the pitch. These are individual memories, not proof that every player or every generation had the same experience.

A song before the 1975 final
Former Pakistan captain Islahuddin Siddiqui recalled Ashok Kumar singing before the 1975 final. As quoted by Hindustan Times, Siddiqui said, “That just showed how confident the two teams were back then,” adding, “There was mutual respect between the players too.”

Former India centre-forward Ashok Kumar described friendships with Pakistan players and the welcome he received on visits. He told Hindustan Times: “We shared a great relationship with some Pakistan players. We spent a lot of time together and also went for their weddings. Some of the players’ mothers would come to receive us at the airport too,”

The mental contest
Former India captain Sardar Singh emphasised the psychological pressure of these fixtures. In the feature, he said: “Ninety per cent of the matches were won by teams which were mentally stronger.” That is his assessment of the rivalry’s demands, rather than a measured statistic about all matches.

The Hindustan Times feature links the recent imbalance to contrasting conditions in the two national programmes. Its analysis says investment strengthened India’s infrastructure and coaching, while Pakistan’s hockey programme struggled. The feature’s account is not an independently established comparison of funding or facilities, and the 4–3 semi-final does not demonstrate that those long-term conditions have shifted.

Former Pakistan player Shahbaz Ahmed offered a stark description of the situation in an interview that the feature says took place the previous year: “Hockey culture has just suddenly died in Pakistan.” The remark conveys his concern; it should not be read as a comprehensive measure of participation or as a description of every part of Pakistani hockey.
The crowd remembered from the 2010 World Cup
Hindustan Times reported that 16,000 fans attended the India–Pakistan match at the 2010 World Cup in New Delhi. The figure belongs to the newspaper’s 2026 feature account and was not independently corroborated here. It reflects the scale of attention the fixture can attract, but attendance at one event does not establish how popular hockey is across either country today.
