India were due to face Brazil in a senior men’s international friendly at Kolkata’s Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan on October 3, 2026, with kickoff scheduled for 19:30 IST. On match eve, India head coach Khalid Jamil’s message was to accept the pressure, take responsibility and focus on effort: “The result is not in our hands but if you give your best, anything can happen.”
Why this India–Brazil friendly matters
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) described this as the first senior-level meeting between India and Brazil. In its October 2 match preview, the federation listed Brazil fifth and India 138th in the FIFA Men’s World Ranking, calling Brazil India’s highest-ranked opponent since the ranking began in August 1993. These are AIFF’s match-eve figures, not a separately refreshed ranking.

The scale of the challenge is clear, but the ranking gap is context rather than a forecast. Jamil acknowledged Brazil’s quality in the AIFF preview: “They are the best team. They are known as the best of the best. They are defensively very strong. Their attacking is good.”

According to Hindustan Times, Jamil asked his players to take responsibility and turn the pressure into pleasure. India defender Anwar Ali, seated beside the coach, said the players needed to cut out mistakes, follow the plan and give 100%. In the AIFF preview, Ali added: “We just have to focus. Because everyone knows how Brazil play. So, we just have to keep calm in the field. And deal with the pressure.”

Stay compact, then attack in transition
India’s recent reference point was a 1–1 draw with Panama on September 25. AIFF said Ryan Williams scored for India and described the team as compact in defence, courageous in its pressing and threatening in transition. Hindustan Times reported that India were expected to stay compact against Brazil and counterattack, including by going long to bypass midfield.
AIFF noted that India could not spend the whole match defending around its own penalty area. The Panama draw was a useful example of how India might compete, not a prediction: AIFF said it was the first time India had avoided defeat against a top-50 side.
How India prepared for the match
Hindustan Times reported that India’s camp began nearly three weeks before the Brazil fixture. Clubs released players ahead of the international break that began September 21, and representatives from five Indian Super League (ISL) clubs met Jamil, his staff and AIFF deputy secretary-general Satyanarayan Muthyalu to discuss the current window and the team’s November trip to New Zealand.

Muthyalu described the club-coach discussions as an unusual step toward closer cooperation: “This is perhaps for the first time in a long period that the clubs and the coach exchanged views, and the clubs said they would also help in building the national team.”
Hindustan Times also placed the current team in a wider recent history: India recorded three tournament wins in 2023 that took the side back into the top 100, and had an Asian Cup qualifying campaign in 2022. Those are historical markers, not current ranking figures.
Brazil’s purpose: assess a changing squad
Brazil arrived after a 1–1 draw with Australia in Townsville and a 4–2 win in Brisbane, in which Vanderson, Raphinha, Bruno Guimarães and Vinícius Júnior scored, according to AIFF. Raphinha was set to miss the India match with a thigh injury; AIFF said Brazil’s travelling squad had consequently been reduced from 26 players to 25.

Hindustan Times reported that Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti viewed the fixtures as part of a squad refresh after the World Cup. “I am in the process of finding my final squad,” he said, adding that selecting for a national team is different from selecting at a club because “you do not have time.” He called the India fixture “an important game to start a new cycle of players.”

As reported by Hindustan Times on October 2, Brazil’s goalkeepers Hugo Souza, Pedro Morisco and Otavio had three senior internationals between them. Ancelotti said that 22-year-old Morisco could have a chance to demonstrate his skill; the report said the Coritiba goalkeeper had made more than 100 club appearances. It also named Otavio, Gabriel Bontempo, Breno Bidon and Arthur Dias as players who had earned first caps in Australia, and listed Morisco, Mauro Junior, Jair Cunha and Matheuzinho as uncapped in the squad. This is the report’s squad context at that time, not a guarantee of who would play against India.
Ancelotti singled out India forward Ryan Williams’ pace as a potential danger. Brazil captain Marquinhos, meanwhile, mentioned India captain and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu. Hindustan Times said the Brazil match would be Sandhu’s 90th international if he started; the milestone was therefore conditional on selection.
