India–Nepal UPI–NPI Remittances: How the New Service Works

India’s UPI and Nepal’s National Payments Interface (NPI) began supporting person-to-person cross-border remittances on June 6, 2026. The service lets eligible users send money between the two countries through participating bank and payment apps, using identifiers such as a mobile number, virtual payment address (VPA) or UPI ID rather than sharing bank account details. Availability, limits and fees depend on the transfer direction and provider.

What launched, and when?

The UPI–NPI person-to-person (P2P) remittance linkage officially launched on June 6, 2026, according to the Government of India announcement. NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), the international arm of India’s National Payments Corporation of India, worked with Nepal Clearing House Limited (NCHL) on the integration. NCHL’s launch announcement was dated June 9, and the government announcement was posted June 11.

The service is intended to move funds in real time through supported mobile banking apps and digital wallets. NCHL initially described the rollout as available through select banks, with additional providers to be added.

Who can send money in each direction?

India to Nepal

According to NCHL’s service information, both Indian and Nepali citizens can use India-to-Nepal transfers, provided they use a participating provider. Sending channels include participating Indian bank apps and non-bank third-party app providers (TPAPs). The sender can address a recipient by mobile number or VPA. NCHL says both sender and recipient must give one-time consent for cross-border transfers.

  • Gift Cards are shipped active and ready for use.
  • This card is non-reloadable. No cash or ATM access. Funds do not expire. If available funds remain on your card after the valid thru date has passed, please call customer service for a replacement card. A one-time purchase fee applies at the time of checkout. No fees after purchase.
  • To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.
  • To report your Lost or Stolen Physical Visa Card, call Customer Service 24/7 at 1 (888) 524-1283 to cancel your Gift Card as soon as you can. You will be asked to provide the Gift Card number and other identifying information.
  • Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.

Nepal to India

NCHL specifies that the Nepal-origin service is for Indian citizens who maintain an account with a participating member bank in Nepal. Sending options include a bank’s mobile app, connectIPS and account-linked payment service provider apps. The recipient is identified using a UPI ID, and one-time cross-border consent is required from both parties.

How to make a transfer

The exact screens vary by bank or app, but NCHL’s published process follows these steps:

Rank #2
Uber eGift Card
  • 24/7 safe pickups
  • Order from hundreds of local restaurants
  • Low-cost and premium options
  • Track delivery
  • Redemption: Online
  1. Check that the sending provider is participating and that the account is enabled for the direction you need.
  2. Enable the cross-border service in the app and complete the required one-time consent for the sender and recipient.
  3. Enter the recipient’s supported payment identifier: a mobile number or VPA for India-to-Nepal, or a UPI ID for Nepal-to-India.
  4. For a Nepal-to-India transfer, enter the amount in Nepalese rupees and review the displayed Indian-rupee equivalent before proceeding.
  5. Review the details and any displayed charges, then authorize using the transaction PIN and/or OTP requested by the provider.

Do not assume that seeing a provider’s name on a list means every account or app feature is enabled. Confirm availability with the bank or app before initiating a transfer.

Published limits and fees

The following figures are those shown on NCHL’s service page in 2026; they are provider-published limits, not a guarantee that every participating bank or app will permit the maximum. Check the current app or bank terms before sending.

How this differs from UPI QR payments in Nepal

UPI QR merchant payments and UPI–NPI remittances are different services. Indian consumers could already use UPI to pay merchants by scanning QR codes on Nepal’s Fonepay network; NPCI International announced that person-to-merchant rollout on March 8, 2024 (NPCI International announcement). The 2026 linkage adds a P2P remittance route for sending money to another person. A merchant QR purchase is not a transfer to an individual.

How it compares with RBI’s Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility

The UPI–NPI linkage is not the only India–Nepal transfer mechanism. The Reserve Bank of India’s Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility (INRF) is a separate, India-to-Nepal NEFT-based scheme launched in May 2008 and updated in August 2021. RBI’s FAQ, updated September 27, 2023, describes its limits and process. These are not UPI–NPI terms.

Feature UPI–NPI linkage RBI Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility
Direction India to Nepal and Nepal to India India to Nepal
Eligibility and channel Provider participation and direction-specific eligibility; transfers use participating apps Sender may use an NEFT-enabled Indian bank branch; walk-in/non-customer transfers are also covered under RBI’s stated limits
Recipient details and delivery Uses mobile number, VPA or UPI ID, depending on direction; app-based transfer Transfers pool through SBI in India and are handled in Nepal by Nepal SBI Ltd. (NSBL); cash delivery through an authorized money-transfer company is possible in specified cases
Published limits NCHL’s 2026 service page: up to INR 200,000 per India-to-Nepal transaction; up to INR 15,000 per Nepal-to-India transaction and INR 100,000 monthly RBI FAQ updated September 27, 2023: up to ₹2 lakh per transaction for an account holder; walk-in/non-customer up to ₹50,000 per transaction, with 12 remittances per year
Fees NCHL lists NPR 240 per Nepal-to-India transaction; India-to-Nepal users should check their provider RBI publishes scheme-specific fees; they do not apply to UPI–NPI

Because current India-side UPI–NPI charges and exchange-rate treatment are not consolidated in the available provider information, these options cannot be compared on a like-for-like total-cost basis. For the facility’s exact terms, see the RBI’s Indo-Nepal Remittance Facility FAQ.
