There is no single India-wide monthly cost for running a 24/7 FFmpeg YouTube stream on a Raspberry Pi or a VPS. A Pi’s running cost depends on measured electricity use and your marginal power tariff; home broadband may add nothing if you already pay for it, or may incur an incremental cost if your plan needs upgrading. A VPS has a recurring server fee, but transfer limits, taxes, and the server’s capacity can change the real bill. Compare the same 30-day period and stream settings, and keep the Pi’s upfront hardware cost separate from monthly operating costs.
What to include in a fair monthly comparison
Compare the same 30-day period and the same output configuration. Include compute, electricity, bandwidth, applicable taxes, and the practical cost of setup, monitoring, and recovery. A VPS is not automatically managed streaming: unless its provider explicitly supplies a streaming service, you remain responsible for the server and FFmpeg software.

| Cost item | Raspberry Pi at home | VPS |
|---|---|---|
| One-time hardware | Board, suitable power supply, storage, and any cooling or case required. Use a current retailer quote; no verified India retail price is established here. | Usually no board purchase; check whether storage, backups, or setup fees are extra. |
| Monthly compute | No separate cloud compute fee, but the hardware purchase and eventual replacement still have a cost. | Selected plan fee; confirm CPU capacity and renewal terms. |
| Monthly electricity | Measured average wall watts × 0.72 kWh per watt for 30 days × your marginal tariff in ₹/kWh. | Usually part of the plan fee; confirm provider terms. |
| Monthly internet or transfer | Incremental home broadband cost, if any, plus any usage or fair-use limits that matter. | Check transfer allowance, egress fees, and fair-use policy. |
| Taxes and extras | Any applicable tax or extra hardware/accessory costs. | Applicable taxes not already included, plus storage, backups, or transfer charges. |
| First-year total | Hardware and accessories + 12 months of recurring costs. | 12 months of plan fees and recurring extras or taxes. |
For the Pi electricity cell, use your own bill’s applicable marginal rate rather than an assumed national average. Its recurring monthly electricity charge is:
Average wall watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 × your tariff in ₹/kWh.

Equivalently, a 30-day month uses 0.72 kWh for every watt of continuous average draw. Measure the complete running setup at the wall; do not substitute the power supply’s rated capacity for actual consumption.
How much electricity does a Raspberry Pi 5 use for FFmpeg?
There is no established universal FFmpeg draw for this comparison: resolution, frame rate, codec, preset, input workflow, peripherals, and cooling all affect the result. Raspberry Pi’s official hardware documentation lists 800 mA as typical bare-board active current and recommends a 5 V, 5 A supply for Pi 5. The recommended supply capacity is not a measurement of the board’s workload power draw, and peripherals add demand. See Raspberry Pi’s official hardware documentation.
Use a plug-in wall meter with the Pi, power supply, storage, and attached peripherals in the configuration you intend to run. Record average watts over a representative period while the actual FFmpeg workload is active, then apply the formula above to your own tariff. The Raspberry Pi H.264 performance paper reports a 10–20% measurement discrepancy in the context of measurements on a live system; treat short measurement runs as estimates, not exact long-term totals. See Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance paper.

Estimate the stream’s monthly bandwidth
A continuously running stream can transfer a large amount of data. For a constant bitrate, estimate decimal gigabytes over 30 days as:
Bitrate in Mbps × 10.8 × 30.
This is an approximation; protocol and container overhead make actual use somewhat higher. For example, use your configured bitrate in the formula rather than assuming a typical stream rate. Compare the estimate against a home plan’s fair-use threshold or a VPS transfer cap before deciding that either connection is sufficient.
BharatNet’s FTTH page gives geographically and category-restricted examples, not national broadband norms: Rural Entry is listed at ₹259/month for up to 25 Mbps through 700 GB, then up to 2 Mbps; Fibre Home WiFi is ₹399/month for up to 40 Mbps through 1,400 GB, then up to 4 Mbps. Eligibility and reduced speeds apply. See BharatNet’s FTTH plan page.

VPS examples listed in India
The following are vendor-listed offers accessed in 2026, not an independent price survey or benchmark. A listed rate does not establish that a plan can encode your exact stream reliably. Check checkout and renewal pricing, GST, location, CPU capacity, and the transfer policy before buying.

| Provider and listed plan | Listed resources or transfer terms | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Inservers: ₹880/month | 2 vCore, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe; 1 Gbps unmetered transfer stated by provider. | Meaning and conditions of “unmetered,” CPU capacity for your chosen encoding, taxes, location, and renewal price. |
| CloudPe: ₹930/month | 4 GB RAM; provider states no egress fees. | Included transfer or fair-use limits, CPU capacity, storage, taxes, location, and renewal price. |
| Endercloud: ₹999/month | 3 vCore, 8 GB RAM, 50 GB NVMe, 2 TB bandwidth. | Whether the allowance covers your bitrate estimate, overage terms, CPU capacity, taxes, location, and renewal price. |
These plan terms are provider claims and have not been independently benchmarked. IndiaAI’s listed cloud prices are GPU-oriented and do not establish an ordinary CPU VPS rate directly comparable to this FFmpeg use case; see IndiaAI’s compute-capacity listing.
Which option is cheaper for your setup?
A Pi can have lower recurring spend when
- You already have suitable hardware and include its purchase or replacement cost honestly in the first-year calculation.
- Your marginal electricity tariff and measured wall draw produce a manageable power bill.
- Your existing broadband can carry the stream without an incremental plan cost or a restrictive usage threshold.
A VPS can be more predictable when
- You prefer a visible monthly server fee to relying on home power and connectivity.
- The plan’s transfer terms cover the calculated stream volume and its CPU capacity handles your chosen FFmpeg settings.
- You accept that the provider manages the physical server, while you still manage the operating system, FFmpeg, and stream recovery unless the vendor states otherwise.
Neither is universally cheaper. Populate the comparison table with your actual wall-meter reading, tariff, incremental internet cost, selected VPS checkout terms, and Pi hardware budget. Compare first-year totals as well as recurring costs; otherwise a Pi can look artificially cheap because the board and accessories have been treated as free.

When the do-it-yourself route is not the only choice
If you want the Pi or VPS to run the workflow, test the exact resolution, frame rate, codec, preset, input, and output settings you intend to keep online. A configuration that runs for a short test is not proof of reliable continuous encoding, and a bandwidth allowance that looks large may still be insufficient at your chosen bitrate.
Or let it run in the cloud

- For a Pi: measure the complete setup at the wall under the real FFmpeg workload, use your own marginal tariff, and budget for board, power supply, storage, and any needed cooling or case.
- For either setup: estimate 30-day transfer from the configured bitrate and account for overhead; confirm that bandwidth limits will not slow or interrupt the stream.
- For a VPS: check CPU suitability, location, transfer or egress policy, tax, backups or storage extras, and renewal price. “Unmetered” and “no egress fees” are provider-stated terms, not a substitute for checking fair use.
- For a home Pi: include the practical dependence on your home electricity and broadband, as well as the time needed to monitor and recover the software.
BharatNet’s amended bandwidth programme lists a tariff of ₹120 per Mbps per year plus GST, effective 11 May 2026 through 31 December 2028 unless revised. The page states a six-month minimum leasing period and minimum billing of 200 Mbps at the upstream node; this is a programme bandwidth lease, not a normal household broadband tariff. See BharatNet’s bandwidth tariff page.
