You can use a second-hand laptop to send prerecorded video to YouTube as a live stream, provided that the particular laptop, encoder, power supply and internet connection can sustain the workload. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a Live server URL and stream key; its help pages do not specify minimum laptop specifications or guarantee that any used computer will run continuously. Plan the stream’s archive separately: YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Before you start: check channel access and the laptop
Confirm that the channel can livestream
YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and that the person livestreaming is at least 16. Check the channel’s access before configuring a computer; a capable laptop cannot bypass an account restriction. See YouTube’s livestreaming requirements.

Assess the specific used computer
YouTube does not publish a minimum CPU, memory, graphics, storage, thermal or network specification for this use. There is therefore no reliable universal model or specification to recommend. The result depends on the laptop’s condition, the encoder software, the source video and your local power and internet conditions. Test the actual setup before relying on it for a continuous channel. A laptop that can play a video is not thereby proven capable of encoding and sending a stable livestream around the clock.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check that the machine stays powered and does not overheat during a sustained test.
- Check that the internet connection remains stable while the encoder is sending video.
- Monitor both the picture and sound in YouTube’s preview and during transmission.
- Keep a separate local copy of videos you may need to recover or archive.
Set up the prerecorded stream with an encoder
YouTube supports sending a live stream from a computer using encoder software. The steps below describe the YouTube-side workflow; the available sources do not establish or endorse a particular encoder application or its settings.

- Prepare the video and encoder. Select the prerecorded video or playlist you intend to send and configure it in your chosen encoder. Confirm that the encoder can read the media and that the audio and video are present.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or schedule a livestream in YouTube Studio and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube’s setup instructions provide a server URL and stream key for the stream.
- Enter the connection details in the encoder. Copy the Live server URL and stream key from YouTube into the corresponding encoder fields. Treat the key as private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Check the preview before going live. Start the encoder’s connection and wait for YouTube to receive the signal. Confirm that the correct video and audio appear in the preview, then start the livestream using the controls shown in YouTube Studio.
- Monitor the live output. Watch for interruptions and check audio and picture quality. YouTube’s guidance recommends monitoring the stream and checking the local archive; a successful start is not proof that the laptop or connection will stay reliable indefinitely.

Plan for the 12-hour archive limit
Keeping a channel live and preserving a replay are separate goals. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. That makes one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast a poor choice if you are relying on YouTube to save a complete replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup; shorter sessions can also avoid treating a single over-12-hour stream as a dependable archive.

Do not assume a particular restart schedule guarantees a saved replay. Choose session lengths and backup practices around whether preserving each broadcast matters, and verify that your own local recording or backup is working. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Set the audience correctly for children’s content
If the stream is directed to children, set its audience designation accurately as Made for Kids in YouTube Studio. YouTube cautions creators not to rely only on automated systems to decide this. The designation affects features and advertising: live chat and Super Chat are among the features unavailable on Made for Kids livestreams, personalized ads are disabled, and contextual ads may appear. Do not mark content otherwise simply to retain features. Review YouTube’s Made for Kids guidance and its live-streaming restrictions.

Understand monetization before building around 24/7 playback
A continuous schedule does not guarantee earnings or YouTube Partner Program acceptance. YouTube’s general YPP overview, consulted in 2026, lists the full ad-revenue eligibility threshold as 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public long-form watch hours in the previous 365 days or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Eligibility also depends on applicable policies, an eligible location, account standing and channel review; reaching the numerical threshold alone is not acceptance. These are platform thresholds, not a promise that an Indian channel will earn a particular amount. Check YouTube Partner Program overview and eligibility for current requirements.
YouTube’s monetization policies expect original, authentic work and say content should not be mass-produced, generic or repetitive. Reviewers may consider a channel’s theme, top and newest videos, watch-time share, metadata and About section. Replaying the same material around the clock is not a monetization shortcut, and a loop does not itself make a channel eligible. See YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot the setup
| Symptom | What to check | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the encoder signal | Confirm that the encoder has the current Live server URL and stream key, and that the channel is allowed to livestream. | Copy the connection details again from the current YouTube Live setup and check the channel’s livestream access requirements. |
| The preview has no picture or sound | Check that the selected media is playing in the encoder and that the intended video and audio sources are included. | Correct the encoder’s source selection, then inspect the YouTube preview before starting the public stream. |
| The stream drops during a long run | The laptop, encoder, power or internet connection may have interrupted; the official setup guidance does not establish 24/7 reliability for a used device. | Check the computer and connection, restore the encoder signal, and monitor the stream after recovery. Test sustained operation rather than assuming the computer will stay online. |
| A replay is missing or incomplete | A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. | Keep a local archive backup and plan session lengths with YouTube’s archive limitation in mind. |
| Chat or personalized advertising is unavailable | These restrictions apply to Made for Kids livestreams. | Keep the audience designation accurate; do not change it just to restore features. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want prerecorded videos to keep streaming to YouTube without leaving a laptop on at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
