India beat Pakistan 4–3 in the men’s semifinal of the 2026 Asian Games on 1 October, advancing to the final after Abhishek’s deflected goal with 49.2 seconds remaining. India had led 3–0 before Pakistan fought back to level the match.
How India’s 3–0 lead became a 3–3 thriller
India started strongly and built a three-goal advantage. Harmanpreet Singh scored twice and Sukhjeet Singh added the other goal. Pakistan then turned the semifinal around: Abu Mahmood scored in the 30th minute, Hannan Shahid made it 3–2 in the 45th, and Waheed Ashraf Rana equalized in the 49th.

India captain Harmanpreet later identified defensive errors as a key reason for the comeback. Speaking to the official broadcaster Sony, as quoted by Hindustan Times, he said: “We started very well, but in the second half we made many mistakes, especially in our defence. They used those opportunities to score some quick goals.”

Abhishek’s late goal decided the semifinal
With the score level and a shootout a possibility, India kept possession and created one final opportunity. Abhishek’s shot took a deflection off Sufiyan Khan’s stick and crossed the line with 49.2 seconds left, according to Hockey India’s match report. The report describes the deflection but does not establish whether it was intended. The FIH event record lists Abhishek’s goal in the 60th minute, its match-minute notation for the late score.

What the result means
The win sent India to the men’s Asian Games final. It was a narrow escape after a three-goal lead disappeared, rather than a match India controlled from start to finish: the early advantage gave way to defensive mistakes and a Pakistan comeback before Abhishek’s late, deflected goal settled the contest.
