Defence and nuclear energy were discussed as areas for possible future cooperation, but neither appears as a signed instrument in the Indian government’s official list.
What India and Switzerland formally announced
The Indian government’s 5 October 2026 outcomes list records five formal deliverables. They cover mobility, professional exchanges, transport, research and innovation; an inaugural Indo-Swiss Research Flagship event is also listed, but it is an announcement rather than a sixth agreement.

What the mobility announcement says about visas and permits
The Migration and Mobility Partnership MoU describes multiple-entry visas for up to five years, visits of up to six months per visit, and renewable one-year student permits. These are terms summarized in the government announcement, not a guarantee that every Indian or Swiss applicant qualifies or that the arrangements are already available for applications. The outcomes page does not provide full legal text, comprehensive application instructions or an implementation date.

The stated aims also include cooperation under equal-treatment principles and preventing irregular migration, human exploitation and trafficking in accordance with each country’s laws. Applicants should rely on current official immigration guidance for eligibility and procedures rather than treating the headline durations as a complete set of visa rules.

How the young-professional exchange is described
The agreement establishes a temporary work-exchange scheme for young professionals to build professional and language skills. The announcement describes capacity of 300 people per country annually, potentially increasing to 500. It also gives nationality and residency verification timelines of 30 or 90 days. The summary does not specify all participant conditions or explain which cases fall under each timeline, so those figures should not be treated as a complete application guide.
Technology, infrastructure, research and startup cooperation
Transport and infrastructure
India’s Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and Switzerland’s Federal Department of Economic Affairs, Education and Research are to promote sustainable infrastructure collaboration. The named areas—electric vehicles, ropeways, circular economy and tunnels—give the cooperation a practical technology and infrastructure focus.
Scientific research
India’s Department of Science and Technology and the Swiss National Science Foundation signed a letter of intent aimed at exploratory scientific collaboration, partnerships for future joint projects and a framework for sustained initiatives in mutually agreed priority areas. The two countries already signed a scientific and technological cooperation agreement in 2003, followed by joint research programs.
Startup innovation
Under an implementation arrangement between India’s Department of Science and Technology and Zurich University of Applied Sciences, the Indo–Swiss Academia–Industry Training program is intended to support early-stage startups. Its described activities include exchanges, workshops, capability-building and networking, alongside broader cooperation on innovation, technology transfer and entrepreneurship.
Were defence or nuclear-energy agreements signed?
Not according to the Indian government’s published list of five formal outcomes. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the leaders identified possibilities for cooperation in military exchanges and defence production and agreed to deepen collaboration in nuclear energy. Those remarks, reported by The Indian Express, describe areas for further cooperation; they do not establish a signed defence or nuclear-energy instrument.

The visit came after the India–EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), signed on 10 March 2024, entered into force on 1 October 2025. Switzerland is one of the European Free Trade Association states. The agreement provides a wider economic backdrop for the bilateral announcements, but it is separate from the five visit-related deliverables.
According to the Swiss government’s bilateral relations page, published 22 September 2026, Swiss exports to India totalled CHF 13.2 billion in 2025 and Swiss imports from India totalled CHF 2.4 billion in 2025. Swiss direct investment in India stood at CHF 10.2 billion at the end of 2024; the same page says around 350 Swiss companies are present in India through joint ventures, subsidiaries or branches. The investment figure is a 2024 year-end measure, not a 2025 figure.
