Compare the full collection-to-delivery service—not just a sailing schedule or flight—and verify current routing, capacity, charges and import requirements for your shipment.
Why the exact India–Africa lane matters
Africa is not one shipping destination. India’s Ministry of Commerce says its Sub-Saharan Africa division covers 48 countries across East, West, Central and Southern Africa. A shipment to a port city and one to an inland address can involve different routes, handling and delivery arrangements. Start with the destination country and final delivery address, not simply “Africa.”

The same principle applies at origin. India’s Sagarmala program notes that cargo-generating centres are often inland and that longer distances to ports can raise logistics costs and make delivery times more variable. A port-to-port schedule therefore does not tell you when goods will arrive at your premises or customer’s address.
What to compare before choosing sea or air
Ask providers to quote the same shipment on the same delivery basis. Compare the complete service and confirm what is included, excluded and subject to change.

| Decision factor | What to establish for your shipment |
|---|---|
| Total cost | Request door-to-door pricing, including collection, inland transport, terminal or airport handling, customs support, surcharges, insurance if required, and final delivery. Confirm the quote’s validity and exclusions. The official sources cited here do not provide comparable, current India–Africa rates. |
| Elapsed time | Compare collection-to-delivery timing, including booking cut-offs, consolidation, sailing or flight, transfers, clearance and final-mile delivery. No cited official source establishes a comparable, current door-to-door transit time for the two modes across these destinations. |
| Routing and schedule | Ask whether the proposed route is direct or involves transfers or transshipment, what departures are available, and what happens if a connection or sailing changes. A carrier’s service announcement is not a guarantee of space or timing on an individual booking. |
| Cargo acceptance and handling | Provide the commodity, dimensions, gross and chargeable weight, value, fragility and any temperature or other special handling needs. Get confirmation that the carrier will accept the goods on the specific service. |
| Destination logistics | Confirm the arrival port or airport, clearance arrangements, local delivery coverage, road access and any cross-border leg. A vessel call or airport arrival does not by itself establish delivery to the final address. |
| Risk and working capital | Review insurance terms, possible delay or storage charges, payment timing and the business cost of inventory in transit. Recheck route disruption and insurance conditions when requesting the quote. |
When to evaluate each mode
Evaluate air freight when the deadline drives the decision
Ask for an air option when the required arrival date or the cargo’s handling needs make the quoted total value worthwhile. Judge it by the promised end-to-end schedule and confirmed cargo acceptance—not by flight duration alone. Include airport handling, transfers, customs clearance and final delivery in the comparison.
Evaluate sea freight when the schedule and total offer fit
Ask for a sea option when the shipment can use an available scheduled service and its quoted end-to-end timing and cost meet the business need. Confirm the vessel route, departure and arrival points, inland legs and any transfer or transshipment. A published weekly service does not establish the transit time, rate or space available for a particular booking.

What scheduled sea services are announced for East Africa
Two carrier announcements in August 2026 describe weekly India–East Africa services. OOCL’s 27 August 2026 announcement describes EAX8, linking Nhava Sheva and Mundra with Mombasa and Dar es Salaam, with stated start dates of 22 and 23 September 2026. ONE’s 26 August 2026 notice separately announced weekly IMM and IMD services effective in September 2026.

These announcements establish that scheduled options were announced for the named ports; they do not establish a shipment’s rate, exact transit, available space, actual port calls or inland delivery. Check the carrier’s live schedule and confirm the booking details with the carrier or freight provider.
Account for port, airport and customs handling
Include the inland legs and port work
Sagarmala, a Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways program, is intended to reduce logistics costs and optimize export-import container movement. The ministry’s material says more than 90% of India’s trade by volume moves by maritime routes, but that national figure does not determine the best mode for an individual shipment. Its point about inland cargo origins is directly relevant: add collection to the Indian gateway and port-to-final-address delivery to the quoted schedule and cost.

Include air-cargo procedures in the provider’s plan
Air cargo also involves handling and customs procedures. In an April 2025 announcement, India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs described transshipment facilitation, a waiver of a transshipment permit fee effective 24 April 2025, temporary import of air Unit Load Devices under a continuity bond, and online filing through ICEGATE. These are operational provisions, not proof that air is faster or cheaper end to end. Check later notices and confirm which procedures apply to your shipment before relying on them.

A Government of India account dated 31 July 2026 described geopolitical disruption affecting international routes, cargo movement, port operations, freight and insurance costs. It also reported relief measures with expiry dates, including measures that had ended by the time described. Treat this as evidence that conditions can change, not as an indication that temporary relief remains available. Ask providers for current routing, charges and insurance terms when they quote.

Trade arrangements are a separate question from freight mode. The Ministry of Commerce says the India–Mauritius CECPA entered into force on 1 April 2021 and that India–SACU PTA negotiations resumed in 2025 after previously stalling. These facts do not determine a sea or air route, price or delivery time. Check the import rules, duties and documentation applicable to the actual destination and goods with a qualified broker or relevant authority.
Quick Recap
What to send a freight provider for a comparable quote
- Give the origin postcode and preferred gateway in India, plus the destination country, port or airport, and full final delivery address.
- Describe the commodity and any regulated, fragile, temperature-controlled or other special handling characteristics.
- Provide gross weight, dimensions, shipment volume and frequency. Ask the provider to state the chargeable weight it uses for an air quote.
- Give the required arrival date and ask for the collection-to-delivery schedule, including cut-offs, transfers, clearance and final delivery.
- Specify whether you need customs clearance, insurance, collection and final delivery included. Ask the provider to list exclusions and possible additional charges.
- Request both modes on the same delivery scope and commercial terms, and have the provider state routing, connections, available departures, quote date and validity.
- Verify destination import requirements with a qualified broker or relevant authority before booking.
