Index mutual funds vs ETFs: Which is better for investing in the Nifty 50?

Neither is universally better. A direct Nifty 50 index mutual fund is usually the easier choice for a monthly SIP, automatic NAV-based investing, fractional allocation and investors who do not want a demat account. A liquid Nifty 50 ETF is often more suitable when you already have a trading and demat account, can use exchange orders and want intraday price control or potentially lower fund expenses.

Make the decision on total cost, tracking quality and execution—not on the quoted expense ratio alone. ETF investors must account for brokerage, bid-ask spread, demat charges and the possibility that the market price differs from NAV. Index-fund investors should compare the direct-plan expense ratio, tracking difference, exit load and any platform fee.

The short answer: match the vehicle to how you invest

If your priority is… Usually the better fit Why
Automated monthly SIPs Direct Nifty 50 index mutual fund Purchases use the applicable NAV, and platforms can allocate fractional units automatically.
No demat account Direct Nifty 50 index mutual fund A mutual-fund account or platform is sufficient; a demat account is not inherently required.
Intraday price control Nifty 50 ETF ETFs trade on the exchange during market hours, so you can use limit orders.
Large lump-sum purchases with an existing demat account Liquid Nifty 50 ETF You can transact at an exchange price and may benefit from a lower fund expense ratio, provided trading costs and spreads are small.
Small, irregular amounts Index mutual fund Fractional allocation and NAV-based processing avoid the need to buy whole exchange units.

These are suitability guidelines, not a guarantee of returns. Two products tracking the same index can produce different realised results because of expenses, cash balances, transaction effects, corporate actions, execution and tracking quality.

What the Nifty 50 represents

The Nifty 50 is a broad large-cap equity index maintained by NSE Indices Limited. NSE reported that it represented approximately 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of stocks listed on the NSE on 30 March 2026. That is a dated snapshot: the percentage changes as share prices, eligible companies and index composition change.

A Nifty 50 fund does not own “the market” in every sense. It seeks to replicate the index’s portfolio and weights. Your result therefore depends on the index return minus the costs and frictions of the particular fund or ETF you buy.

How each investment vehicle works

Nifty 50 index mutual fund

An index mutual fund is a passive scheme designed to mirror the Nifty 50. You place a purchase or redemption request with the fund house or a mutual-fund platform. The transaction is processed at the applicable NAV under the rules for that order and day; unlike an exchange-traded security, it does not have a continuously changing quote that you can trade throughout the session.

The fund allocates your money across units of the scheme. Because allocation is based on NAV, fractional units are routine. This makes a fixed monthly SIP straightforward even when your contribution is smaller than the price of one share or ETF unit.

Nifty 50 ETF

An ETF also seeks to track an index, but its units are listed and traded like shares. NSE describes the distinction this way: “In essence, ETFs trade like stocks and therefore offer a degree of flexibility unavailable with traditional mutual funds.” You place an order through a broker during exchange hours, and the trade occurs at the price matched in the market. That price can be above or below the ETF’s underlying NAV.

SEBI’s investor education material notes the attractions of ETFs—daily liquidity and generally lower fees than mutual-fund schemes—while also warning about brokerage, demat charges and the inability to buy fractional units. You need both a trading account and a demat account to hold exchange-traded units.

Index fund versus ETF: mechanics side by side

Feature Index mutual fund ETF
Dealing price Applicable NAV, normally calculated at the end of the day Exchange price during the trading session; may be above or below NAV
Account requirement Mutual-fund account or platform; demat is not inherently required Trading account and demat account required
SIP and fractional units Monthly SIPs are straightforward; fractional units are supported by NAV allocation Recurring purchases depend on broker support; exchange units are whole units
Costs Expense ratio plus fund-level transaction effects and any platform charge Expense ratio plus brokerage, bid-ask spread, demat and other trading charges
Liquidity Redemption through the fund’s mechanism Depends on exchange volume and the spread available when you trade
Tracking considerations Tracking difference or error caused by expenses and operations The same fund-level tracking issues plus market-price/NAV slippage

Compare the complete cost, not just the TER

Costs inside an index mutual fund

The expense ratio is deducted from the scheme’s assets and reduces the return you receive. Compare the direct-plan expense ratio when you are making a direct investment; a regular plan can include distribution costs. Also check the fund’s tracking difference over multiple years, any exit load, and platform charges that apply to your account or transactions.

Fund-level transaction effects matter as well. Rebalancing, subscriptions and redemptions, cash held for operational needs, and corporate actions can cause the fund’s return to diverge from the index even when the stated expense ratio is low.

Costs around an ETF

An ETF’s quoted expense ratio is only one part of your bill. Add the brokerage charged on each purchase and sale, exchange and statutory charges shown by your broker, the bid-ask spread, demat account maintenance or other depository charges, and any price-versus-NAV slippage. A spread is a real cost even when the broker advertises low commissions: buying at the offer and later selling at the bid leaves the difference behind.

For a small monthly contribution, fixed trading charges and a wide spread can outweigh a modest TER advantage. For a larger, infrequent purchase, the same ETF may be cost-effective if the order is executed in a liquid market at a price close to NAV.

A practical total-cost check

  1. Record the current direct index-fund TER and the ETF TER.
  2. For the ETF, estimate the rupee cost of brokerage, exchange and statutory charges, demat charges allocated to your holding period, and the observed bid-ask spread.
  3. Compare at least three years of tracking difference or tracking error for each candidate.
  4. Consider how often you will buy and sell. Repeated ETF trades multiply spread and brokerage costs; a mutual-fund SIP generally does not create a separate exchange spread.
  5. Use the resulting total cost alongside service reliability and convenience, rather than ranking products by TER alone.

Tracking difference and tracking error explain the return gap

NSE defines tracking error as the annualised standard deviation of the difference between a fund’s return and its target-index return. A lower figure generally indicates closer replication, but you should also inspect the actual tracking difference—the cumulative return gap—over comparable periods.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Several forces can widen the gap:

  • Management expenses and other fund-level costs.
  • Broker commissions and the bid-ask spread paid while the portfolio changes.
  • Cash held for subscriptions, redemptions or operations.
  • Investor inflows and outflows that are not invested at exactly the index’s prices.
  • Corporate actions, dividend timing and rebalancing implementation.
  • For an ETF, the market price moving away from the underlying NAV.

When comparing products, use the same measurement period and index version. A single good month or a low current TER is not evidence of superior long-term replication. A fund with a slightly higher TER can still deliver a smaller realised gap if it trades efficiently and manages flows well.

How to set up a monthly SIP in an index mutual fund

  1. Choose a direct Nifty 50 index scheme. Confirm that its stated benchmark is the Nifty 50, review the current TER, tracking record, fund size, replication method, exit-load rules and service channels.
  2. Complete the account and KYC requirements. Use the fund house or a regulated mutual-fund platform. A demat account is not inherently necessary for holding the units.
  3. Set the SIP amount and date. Select an amount your bank mandate can support every month. NAV-based allocation means the number of units can vary from one instalment to the next.
  4. Check the order status after the debit. Confirm that the instalment was processed, the applicable NAV date was applied and the units appeared in the statement or account.
  5. Review periodically, not daily. At least annually, recheck the TER, tracking difference, exit-load terms and service quality. Do not switch solely because the unit count changes with the market.

A SIP automates contributions; it does not remove equity-market risk. The value can fall, and the index’s constituents and weights can change.

How to buy a Nifty 50 ETF responsibly

  1. Open and fund a trading and demat account. Verify the broker’s brokerage schedule, statutory charges and depository fees before calculating the cost advantage.
  2. Check liquidity before placing the order. Look at the displayed bid and ask, the traded quantity and the recent spread. A high unit volume alone does not prove that the spread is tight at the moment you need to trade.
  3. Compare the exchange price with NAV. A premium means the market price is above NAV; a discount means it is below. Large deviations can make an apparently cheap TER irrelevant.
  4. Prefer a limit order when the spread or liquidity is uncertain. Enter the maximum price you are willing to pay or the minimum price you will accept. A market order can execute across several price levels.
  5. Confirm whole-unit sizing. You can buy only whole exchange units. Set the order size so that the uninvested balance and charges are acceptable; do not force an order simply to make an exact monthly amount.
  6. Review the contract note and demat credit. Check the executed price, quantity, charges and settlement. Keep these records for future tax calculations.

Liquidity, price control and convenience

Mutual-fund liquidity is provided through the scheme’s purchase and redemption process. You do not need another investor to take the other side of your order, although processing follows the applicable NAV and cut-off rules.

ETF liquidity is the liquidity available in the exchange order book. A fund can have a substantial asset base yet still show a wide spread at a particular time. Before trading, inspect the live quote rather than assuming that an index ETF will always transact close to NAV.

ETFs provide intraday control: you can choose when to place an order and set a limit price. That flexibility is useful for a lump sum or for disciplined execution, but it also creates a temptation to trade frequently. Frequent switching can turn a low-cost passive holding into a higher-cost trading strategy.

Tax treatment for the common equity case

For transfers on or after 23 July 2024, the Income Tax Department lists a 20% short-term capital-gains tax rate for qualifying STT-paid equity shares or units of an equity-oriented mutual fund. Section 112A applies a 12.5% long-term capital-gains rate to gains above ₹1.25 lakh, subject to the statutory conditions.

The exact result depends on the asset, holding period, transaction details and your taxpayer circumstances. Keep purchase dates, sale dates, quantities, prices and charges from both mutual-fund statements and ETF contract notes. Verify the current rules with the Income Tax Department or a qualified tax professional before acting; do not assume that every transaction qualifies for the same treatment.

Which option suits a long-term SIP?

Prefer a direct index mutual fund when

  • Your primary habit is a fixed monthly SIP.
  • You want automatic NAV-based investing without watching market hours.
  • Your instalments are too small to buy whole ETF units efficiently.
  • You want fractional allocation and simple automatic reinvestment of each contribution.
  • You do not already have, or do not want to manage, a trading and demat account.
  • You value a single mutual-fund statement and redemption workflow over intraday control.

Prefer a liquid Nifty 50 ETF when

  • You already maintain a trading and demat account.
  • You understand limit orders, spreads, settlement and price-versus-NAV deviations.
  • You are investing a larger lump sum or can combine contributions so trading costs are small relative to the amount.
  • You will check volume, spread and premium or discount before each order.
  • The ETF’s multi-year tracking record and total trading cost are competitive with the index funds available to you.

Due-diligence checklist before selecting a product

  • Benchmark: Confirm that the stated benchmark is the Nifty 50 and that the comparison uses the same index methodology and period.
  • Tracking record: Review at least three years of tracking difference or tracking error, not just the latest month.
  • Current TER: Record the date and plan type. A direct and regular plan are not interchangeable comparisons.
  • Fund size and operations: Check the scheme’s size, replication method, cash management and reliability of service.
  • ETF execution: Examine typical traded volume, bid-ask spread and premium or discount to NAV at the times you expect to invest.
  • Account costs: Include brokerage, statutory charges, demat fees and platform charges.
  • Exit rules: Read any exit load for a mutual fund and the practical sale costs for an ETF.
  • Automation: Confirm that your bank mandate or broker actually supports the recurring schedule you intend to use.
  • Records and tax: Ensure you can download statements, contract notes and transaction history.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing the lowest TER automatically

A low TER does not guarantee the best realised return. Compare the total cost and the three-year tracking record. For an ETF, include the spread and price-to-NAV slippage; for a mutual fund, include tracking difference and any platform charge.

Using a market order in a thin ETF order book

A market order prioritises execution, not price. If the bid-ask spread is wide or the order book is shallow, use a limit order and accept that it may not fill immediately.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring whole-unit constraints

An ETF cannot allocate a fraction of a unit through the exchange. A fixed monthly amount may leave cash idle or require you to change the order size. A mutual-fund SIP avoids that mechanical issue.

Assuming NAV and ETF price are identical

NAV is calculated from the portfolio; the ETF price is set by buyers and sellers during the session. Check both before trading and avoid treating a premium or discount as a permanent bargain.

Comparing unlike plans or dates

Compare direct with direct, the same benchmark and the same period. TERs, spreads, assets and tax rules can change, so record when each figure was observed.

Trading too often

The flexibility of an ETF can encourage timing attempts. Repeated orders add spread and brokerage costs and can move you away from a disciplined long-term allocation. Use intraday control only when it solves a genuine execution need.

How widely these vehicles are used

Nifty Indices reported that, as of 30 June 2025, Nifty 50 ETFs represented 50% of total equity-ETF assets under management, while Nifty 50 index funds represented 43% of total equity-index-fund assets. These are category-level figures for that date, not evidence that one vehicle is superior or that every individual product has adequate liquidity or tracking.

A simple decision process

  1. Start with your workflow. If the money will arrive monthly and you want it invested automatically, begin with a direct index mutual fund. If you already trade and can monitor execution, evaluate ETFs.
  2. Calculate the all-in cost. Add every recurring and per-trade charge instead of comparing TERs in isolation.
  3. Test tracking quality. Compare at least three years of tracking difference or error and investigate unusual gaps.
  4. Check execution conditions. For an ETF, confirm spread, volume and price relative to NAV at your expected trading times.
  5. Verify tax and records. Make sure statements and contract notes will support your holding-period and gain calculations.
  6. Choose one process you can maintain. The best vehicle is the one whose costs, automation and execution you can follow consistently through rising and falling markets.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
