Incremental vs. Full NAS Backups: Which Is Better for a Plex Library?

For most Plex libraries, start with a full backup, then use scheduled incremental or snapshot-based versions and keep a copy on separate hardware or offsite when practical.

For most Plex libraries, use a full initial backup followed by scheduled incremental or snapshot-based backups that retain earlier versions. Also keep a copy on a separate device or remote destination when practical. This limits repeated copying of unchanged data while giving you recovery points; the right schedule and retention depend on how much recent change you can lose, your storage capacity, and your NAS backup software.

Full and incremental backups work differently

Decision Full backup Incremental or snapshot-based backup
Initial run Creates a baseline copy of all selected data. Usually starts with a baseline too. TrueNAS documentation describes the first replication snapshot as full and later snapshots as incremental: TrueNAS advanced replication tasks.
Later runs May copy all selected data again, including files that have not changed; time and space depend on the tool and data. Supported tools can record or transfer changes rather than recopying everything. Synology describes block-level incremental backup and cross-version deduplication in Hyper Backup: Synology NAS backup guidance.
Restore A standalone copy may be straightforward to restore, depending on its format and software. Versioning can provide multiple restore points. Check whether restoring requires a backup chain or specific software; Synology says Hyper Backup data is stored in a proprietary repository and restored with its supported tools.
Protection scope Protects only the files selected and the destinations where copies are stored. Also protects only the selected data and destinations. Incremental scheduling alone does not create an independent copy or shield data from every failure affecting the source.

Neither approach is universally faster, cheaper, or safer. Results depend on how much data changes, the backup software, version retention, destination, and restore design. The available product documentation does not establish Plex-specific backup or restore performance figures.

Back up both Plex’s files and its server data

A Plex setup has two distinct parts to protect: your movie, TV, music, and other media files, and the Plex Media Server data directory. Your NAS backup job must select the media shares you want to preserve; Plex’s database backup does not copy those media files.

Plex recommends backing up the server data directory, which contains server-specific content such as metadata, settings, and view states. Its location varies by operating system. Plex notes that archiving the directory may help with large libraries because processing many small metadata files can take a long time. Windows and Linux users may exclude the Cache directory if desired. Do not save an archived backup inside the Plex data directory itself. See Plex’s guidance on backing up Plex Media Server data.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Treat Plex’s scheduled database backup as an extra safeguard

Plex’s Scheduled Tasks documentation says the server backs up its core SQL database every three days and retains up to three rotating copies by default. Plex also explicitly says this does not back up all metadata and is not a replacement for backing up the Plex Media Server data directory. It is a useful additional recovery aid, not a complete Plex backup: Plex Scheduled Tasks.

Choose a destination that survives the failure you are worried about

  • Another dataset or pool on the same NAS: Convenient for local snapshots or replication, but still on the same system. It may not help if that system is lost or badly damaged. TrueNAS distinguishes local from remote replication in its replication documentation.
  • External USB storage: Synology lists external devices as a backup destination. Confirm that your NAS supports the drive, its filesystem, and its capacity in the NAS vendor’s documentation: Synology NAS backup guidance.
  • A second NAS or remote system: Keeps a copy on different hardware. TrueNAS documents replication to another system, while Synology describes remote NAS backup in its replication documentation and backup guidance.
  • Cloud storage: Can provide an offsite copy. TrueNAS documents cloud backup options and notes that provider storage or transfer charges may apply. Compare capacity, bandwidth, retention, recovery time, and cost before choosing a service: TrueNAS cloud backup and sync documentation.

A local copy is still useful, but it does not address every failure that can affect the NAS or its storage. Synology cautions that a local copy alone does not cover events such as RAID crashes or drive failure in its NAS backup guidance. Select a destination based on the failure you want to recover from, not just the backup method’s name.

Build a Plex backup plan you can restore

  1. Choose the scope. Include the media shares you want to protect and Plex’s server data directory. Decide whether to include cache files based on your platform and needs.
  2. Create the baseline. Run a full backup of the selected data to the destination you chose.
  3. Schedule versioned updates. Use incremental backups or snapshots if your NAS software supports them. Set frequency according to how much recent media or Plex-server changes you are willing to lose; the available sources do not establish one schedule for every library.
  4. Set retention deliberately. Keep enough earlier versions for the recovery history you need, within your capacity. Version count and storage use depend on the backup tool and how the library changes.
  5. Check the restore path. Confirm which files can be browsed individually, whether restoration needs a chain of backup versions, and what software is required. For a Synology Hyper Backup repository, Synology documents restoration using its Hyper Backup tools; do not assume other vendors use the same format.
  6. Verify the job and recovery. Review backup status and periodically test restoring selected media and Plex data. A successful backup run is not proof that the files can be restored as intended.

Match the trade-off to your library

A full copy can make sense as the initial baseline or as a periodic standalone copy when you value a simpler independent restore. Incremental or snapshot-based versions are a practical choice for routine updates when the NAS software supports them and you understand retention and recovery requirements. In either case, a copy kept only on the source NAS remains exposed to losses affecting that system.

Choose backup frequency based on your acquisition rate and tolerance for losing recent changes, then balance version history against destination capacity and transfer limits. Do not use Plex’s every-three-days database task as the schedule for backing up an entire media library: it covers the core SQL database, not the complete Plex data directory or your media files.
