The name on an incoming call is a label assembled by your phone, carrier and caller-ID services; it is not proof that the number exists in your Contacts. A saved contact can be missed because of number formatting, an incomplete lookup or missing permission, while an unsaved number can still receive a business or subscriber label. Dual-SIM selection identifies the line carrying the call, not a separate caller-name database. Roaming changes whether each line can ring and which data services work. Treat every displayed name as a clue, not authentication.
Where the displayed caller name comes from
Several independent systems can attach text to an incoming number. Your device may stop at the first match or combine results according to its platform and carrier configuration.

On iPhone, Apple lists Contacts, Name and Photo Sharing, a carrier call directory, Business Call Identification and caller-identification apps as possible sources. The exact result depends on which services you have enabled and what your carrier supports: Apple’s caller-identification guide.
Android’s native call details use a ContactsContract lookup of the incoming handle. The contact display name can be null when no entry matches, the lookup has not finished, or the calling service does not have READ_CONTACTS permission: Android Call.Details documentation. A carrier or caller-ID app can still supply a label when that native lookup returns nothing.

Why a saved contact can show only a number
A number that is visibly correct to you may not be identical to the value stored in the contact record. International country codes, trunk prefixes, spaces, hyphens, extensions and dual entries can prevent an exact match. Store important contacts in a consistent international format and remove obsolete duplicates.
The lookup may also be delayed while the phone is receiving the call. Android documents an incomplete lookup as a reason for a null contact name, so the name might appear only after the call screen refreshes or after the call ends. If the contact is stored in a different account, a work profile or a disabled synchronization source, the dialer may not be searching that collection.
Finally, the service presenting the call may not be allowed to read contacts. Android explicitly lists unavailable READ_CONTACTS permission as another null-result condition. Review the dialer or caller-ID app’s Contacts permission in your phone’s app-permission settings, balancing the convenience of local names against the access you are willing to grant. A carrier label or app label can also compete with your local entry, so compare the full number rather than trusting whichever text is largest.

Does SIM 1 or SIM 2 determine the name?
Usually, no. Dual SIM primarily chooses which subscription handles calls, messages and mobile data. The caller name is resolved separately from Contacts, carrier directories and identification services, so there is no universal per-SIM name database.
Apple lets you label cellular plans and assign a preferred line to an individual contact. Both numbers can make and receive calls, but the selected line is a routing choice; it does not change the underlying identity lookup. See Apple’s Dual SIM guidance. Android manufacturers expose similar line-selection controls, but menu names and carrier behavior vary by model, country and network.
If the same person calls both numbers, the phone can show the same contact name on either line when the number matches the same contact record. Conversely, two different contacts with similar labels can be distinguished only by the complete number and the line indicator. When troubleshooting, note both the displayed number and the SIM badge before changing settings.

What roaming changes
Roaming affects reachability and billing more than it affects name resolution. Apple documents using a home number together with a local travel plan: both numbers can make and receive calls, but the inactive line may need carrier Wi-Fi Calling and Allow Cellular Data Switching enabled in order to receive calls while the other line is using data. Availability depends on carrier agreements and local network coverage: Apple’s roaming and Dual SIM instructions.

These restrictions do not necessarily remove your Contacts, but a failed network lookup can leave you with only a number when a carrier or cloud identification service cannot be reached.
Before travelling, confirm which line is the voice line, which line supplies data, whether Wi-Fi Calling is supported abroad and whether data switching is allowed. If a familiar caller suddenly appears as an unknown number, first check connectivity and line status before deleting or recreating the contact.

Can caller-ID services see your contacts?
Google distinguishes numbers in your address book from remote numbers. For caller-ID and spam protection, Google says it may send a remote number from a caller or receiver outside your contacts to Google for identification. It also states, “Google doesn’t get phone numbers from your contact list,” and says it does not share remote phone numbers or this data with business partners: Google’s caller-ID and spam explanation and Google’s caller-ID data controls.
The Phone app offers a setting named See caller and spam ID. Turning it off stops the warnings and the collection used for that feature, so you trade automatic identification for less data processing. A third-party caller-ID app can have different terms, databases and opt-out controls; check that app’s own privacy settings rather than assuming Google’s policy applies to it.

Apple describes a privacy-preserving design for Live Caller ID Lookup. Its documentation says the client IP address is hidden with Oblivious HTTP, authentication uses anonymous Privacy Pass, and the queried number is hidden with private information retrieval: Apple’s Live Caller ID Lookup privacy documentation. Those protections reduce what the lookup service can associate with a request, but they do not make every carrier or third-party app equally private.

Yes. Caller ID is not proof of identity. A caller can spoof a number, and a database can attach the wrong person or business label. Android 11 (API level 30) and later support STIR/SHAKEN, a carrier-signing system that lets caller-ID and spam apps receive a verification status. Android also keeps personally identifying 4G+ SIP headers from being shared directly with apps; default caller-ID and spam apps receive the carrier’s verdict instead: Android’s anti-spoofing guidance.
Verification status can improve screening but cannot guarantee that the human speaking is trustworthy. For an unexpected request for money, passwords, one-time codes or urgent action, end the call and contact the person or organisation through a number you already know, such as a statement, official card or previously saved contact. Do not use a callback number supplied during the suspicious call.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Capture the evidence. Write down the complete incoming number, the displayed label, the SIM or line indicator and whether you were roaming. This separates a wrong label from a wrong number.
- Check the local record. Open Contacts, search the full number including country code and inspect duplicate entries, linked accounts and work-profile records. Edit the number into a consistent format if necessary.
- Check permissions and lookup timing. On Android, confirm the dialer or identification service has the Contacts permission it needs. Place a test call after synchronization finishes; an incomplete lookup can temporarily return no name.
- Review identification sources. Disable or re-enable carrier identification and caller-ID apps one at a time. If the label changes while your contact stays the same, the external source—not the SIM—was supplying the text.
- Check the active line. On a dual-SIM phone, confirm which subscription received the call and which one is selected for voice and data. Do not assume SIM 1 is always the home number.
- Check roaming conditions. Verify Wi-Fi Calling support, Allow Cellular Data Switching and Data Roaming costs before testing the other line. Missing Visual Voicemail or MMS while abroad can be a line-service limitation rather than a contact problem.
- Apply a safety check. Treat an unexpected familiar name as unverified. Look for the carrier’s spam or verification indicator, then independently call back through a trusted channel.
How to hear caller names aloud
On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, open Phone > Settings > Answering and ending calls > Read caller names aloud. Samsung provides two choices: Over Bluetooth and headphones only or Always: Samsung’s support instructions. Other Android manufacturers and iPhone versions use different labels or may not offer the feature, so search the phone app’s accessibility or calling settings rather than changing caller-ID databases.

An incoming name is the output of one or more lookups, not a security credential and not a guarantee that the number is saved. Contacts explain many names, but carriers, business directories, shared profiles and apps can label unsaved numbers. Dual-SIM and roaming determine which line can connect and whether network services are available; they do not create independent name stores. Use platform privacy controls, keep contact permissions intentional and verify high-risk requests through a channel you trust.
