Incognito mode in Google Chrome limits what the browser keeps on the computer after you close the window. It does not hide your activity from the websites you visit, from the network you connect through, or from the organization that runs that network. Google’s own help page puts it plainly: “While Incognito can help keep your browsing private on your device, it doesn’t make you invisible.” (Google Chrome Help, “Browse in Incognito mode”)
On a shared computer, then, Incognito keeps the next person who uses that Chrome profile from seeing your session. Anyone and anything outside the device can still see what you did.

What Incognito clears from the computer
While an Incognito window is open, Chrome stores cookies and site data temporarily so that pages work normally. When every Incognito window is closed, Chrome removes that session data and the record of the sites you visited in that session. The session is defined by the windows, not by the tab you were looking at: if one Incognito window is still open, the session carries on, and the cleanup waits until the last one closes.
- Browsing history: visited sites from the session are not added to the history you would see later on that browser.
- Cookies and site data: temporary session data is removed when all Incognito windows close.
- Session scope: closing only the window you are looking at does not end the session if another Incognito window is still open.
What Incognito leaves behind
Two things survive the session. Bookmarks you create in Incognito stay saved on the device, and files you download in Incognito stay on the device after the window closes. If you use a shared computer, these are the first places to check, because they are the traces Incognito does not remove.

Can your ISP see what you do?
Chrome’s help page names schools, employers and internet service providers as the organizations that manage networks and may be able to observe activity in Incognito. Incognito does nothing to change that. The page does not state exactly which details a network operator can see for a given connection, such as whether it can read full page addresses or only the sites you reach. Treat any specific claim about that level of detail as something to verify for your own network, not something the browser guarantees.
Can your employer see your Incognito browsing?
The same answer applies. Chrome lists employers among the parties that may observe activity in Incognito, which means a work network or a managed work device is not a place where Incognito changes what the organization can see. The Chrome Enterprise documentation separates private browsing from other managed browsing modes, but it does not promise that Incognito blocks monitoring or administrator access. Read it as a description of product behavior, not as a privacy guarantee for a work machine.

What happens when you sign into a website
Incognito does not stop a website from knowing who you are once you sign in. Chrome says sites may collect information even when you are not signed in, and signing in tells the site it is you, so later activity is associated with your account. Closing the Incognito window does not undo that association on the site’s side.

Chrome sign-in is not the same as a Google web login
Incognito prevents you from signing in to your Chrome account. You can still sign in to Google web services such as Gmail inside an Incognito window, and that sign-in works like any other website sign-in. The distinction matters because Chrome account features, such as sync, are unavailable in the session, while the web account still ties your activity to you. Incognito compared with normal browsing
The table below covers the behaviors that Google’s help pages establish. It does not add any network-level protection beyond what normal browsing has.

Guest browsing is a separate mode. The Chrome Enterprise documentation distinguishes managed browsing modes, but the sources reviewed for this article do not establish guest-mode behavior on network visibility, so do not treat it as a network privacy tool. - Close every Incognito window, not only the one in front of you, so the session actually ends.
- Sign out of any website you signed into during the session before you close it, because the site keeps the association with your account either way.
- Check Bookmarks and the Downloads list, since both persist after the session.
- Do not rely on Incognito to hide activity from a school, employer or ISP. Chrome’s help page does not say otherwise.
- Do not assume Incognito protects against monitoring software or an administrator who manages the device. The Chrome page does not establish protection against either.
