In Other News: $15K iCloud Spoofing Bugs, AI Policy Experts Phished, Ad Blocker Spies on AI Chats

Yes, each headline reflects a different reported security problem: Apple’s iCloud mail pipeline allowed forged @icloud.com identities despite SPF, DKIM and DMARC results; the TA419 espionage group reportedly proxied Microsoft 365 sign-ins and stole session cookies even when targets used multifactor authentication; and Bay Area Labs reported that the Poper Blocker Chrome extension collected browsing history and conversations from major AI services. The incidents are not reported as one campaign, but they share a warning about trusting visible identity signals, familiar login pages and apparently useful browser add-ons.

Can someone spoof an iCloud email address?

SEC Consult researcher Timo Longin found two vulnerabilities in Apple’s outgoing iCloud SMTP infrastructure. Different components parsed message headers differently, allowing a sender to submit a message that passed Apple’s sender checks but was interpreted by a receiving system as another @icloud.com address. SEC Consult reported that the resulting messages could pass SPF, DKIM and DMARC checks.

That does not mean every iCloud message is forged, or that the flaws remain open. SEC Consult says Apple’s deployed fixes remediated the reported issues on December 9, 2025. Its disclosure timeline, published October 1, 2026, records a $15,000 Apple bounty.

How the parsing failures worked

  • The first demonstrated technique used unusual carriage-return handling so two SMTP components disagreed about the meaning of a From header.
  • The second abused different interpretations of SMTP dot-stuffing and provided a bypass after Apple’s initial remediation.

Longin submitted the first report on May 21, 2024. Apple made an initial change, but a second parsing path was found; SEC Consult reported the mitigation insufficient in December 2024 and found another bypass during testing in 2025. The December 9, 2025 confirmation refers to the reported issues, not a guarantee that every future mail-pipeline defect is impossible.

What authentication badges do—and do not—prove

SPF, DKIM and DMARC evaluate technical relationships in a delivery path. In this case, components inside the sender’s own pipeline disagreed about the message identity, so successful checks did not prove that the human-readable sender was the person or account it appeared to be. Ordinary recipients generally cannot determine this from a mail client’s authentication badge alone.

Forensic analysts may find clues in the raw message, such as an unexpected mismatch between the envelope sender and the displayed identity, but that requires examining headers rather than trusting the visible name. Treat an unexpected request for money, credentials or confidential files as suspicious even when the message appears to come from an iCloud address.

How TA419 reportedly phished AI policy experts despite MFA

SecurityWeek reported that Proofpoint attributed a July 2026 campaign to TA419, described as a China-aligned espionage group. Targets included AI-policy specialists at US think tanks, universities and law firms. The operators impersonated former White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Principal Deputy Director Lynne Edwards Parker and economist Heidi Crebo-Rediker. SecurityWeek also reported an impersonation of an Anthropic employee in February 2026.

The reported attack sequence

  1. The attacker began with apparently benign outreach using a trusted person’s identity.
  2. People who replied were directed to a counterfeit OneDrive page.
  3. The page proxied a Microsoft 365 sign-in and captured session cookies.
  4. Cookies were reportedly stolen even when the target completed multifactor authentication.

The available account does not establish victim totals, malware, infrastructure indicators or the reasoning behind the attribution beyond SecurityWeek’s summary of Proofpoint’s report. It does establish the practical limitation: MFA can verify a login attempt while an adversary-in-the-middle proxy relays the interaction and steals the resulting authenticated session.

What to check before signing in

  • Verify an unexpected policy or research invitation through a separate, known contact method.
  • Inspect the actual browser origin before entering a Microsoft 365 password or approving a prompt; a page that merely looks like OneDrive is not proof of Microsoft hosting.
  • For sensitive accounts, use phishing-resistant, origin-bound authentication where the organization supports it. Such methods are designed to bind the credential to the legitimate site rather than to a look-alike proxy.
  • If a sign-in was entered into a suspicious page, report it immediately, revoke active sessions and follow the organization’s incident-response process; changing the password alone may not invalidate a stolen session cookie.

Can an ad blocker read AI chats?

Bay Area Labs reported that Poper Blocker, a Chrome ad-blocking extension, collected full browsing history and conversations from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode. SecurityWeek said the extension had more than two million users and prompted users to accept data sharing.

The investigation described collection logic being downloaded from the vendor’s server and executed by an interpreter inside the extension. That architecture could let the vendor change collection behavior remotely without distributing a new extension package. The report concerns Poper Blocker specifically; it is not evidence that every ad blocker reads AI conversations.

Why an ad blocker can see sensitive pages

An ad blocker normally needs access to URLs and page activity to decide what to block. That capability can expose far more than advertising context when a user visits a private web app. Bay Area Labs said one in five ad blockers in its examined sample with more than 100,000 users exfiltrated some form of browsing history. That is a finding from the lab’s sample, not a universal rate for all extensions.

Limits on what is known now

The available reporting does not establish Poper Blocker’s current Chrome Web Store version, today’s consent wording or whether its behavior changed after the investigation. Users who installed it should review its permissions and privacy disclosures, disable it on AI and other confidential sites, or remove it if the data access is not justified by the feature they use. Organizations should treat extensions as software with a data-collection and update supply chain, not as harmless browser decorations.

Kiteworks advisories

SecurityWeek reported that more than 100 Kiteworks advisories were published on September 30, 2026, covering Core, Email Protection Gateway, Secure Data Forms and MFT Server. A dozen were rated critical, with reported outcomes including account takeover, code execution and access to internal network resources. The roundup did not identify affected versions, so customers should match their deployment against the applicable Kiteworks advisories rather than assume that every installation is affected.

Microsoft’s 2026 Digital Defense Report

SecurityWeek’s summary of Microsoft’s report covers July 2025 through June 2026. The figures below describe Microsoft’s incident-response observations, not all attacks worldwide.

Measure Reported result
Phishing as an initial-access vector Rose from 7% to 23% in Microsoft incident-response cases
Teams voice phishing (vishing) Increased 502%
Enterprise ransomware detonations Increased nearly 16%
Government agencies’ share of observed activity 27%

AI-assisted Android vulnerability discovery

GitHub Security Lab reported that taskflows for its open-source AI security agent identified 24 Android vulnerabilities. Examples included an OsmAnd issue that could allow another installed app to change settings and expose location or routes, and Wikipedia deeplink issues that could be chained toward account takeover. The researchers also cautioned that the AI misjudged severity and produced unrealistic findings, so human validation remained necessary before treating an alert as a real vulnerability.

Business-email-compromise sentences

SecurityWeek reported that then-serving US Air Force members Chijioke Timothy Odimegwu and Harafat Mogaji received sentences of 111 months and 78 months. The cases involved more than $1.68 million diverted from an Iowa victim and more than $720,000 from an Ohio victim, with combined restitution of $1.36 million. Those are amounts in the specific cases, not an estimate of BEC losses generally.

Cloudflare Containers isolation flaw

Cloudflare patched a flaw in which a Workers Paid customer could recover residual data from disk blocks previously used by another customer’s container on the same host. Researchers found residual data in 18 of 24 placements but could not target a particular victim. Cloudflare said it found no evidence of malicious exploitation.

What these incidents change for everyday security decisions

  • Identity is layered. A familiar sender address, a successful authentication check or a well-known cloud brand can each be imitated or abused at a different layer.
  • Sessions matter after login. Multifactor authentication can be bypassed in practice when a proxy captures an already authenticated session, so suspicious sign-ins require session revocation as well as password changes.
  • Extensions are privileged software. Check what data an extension can read, whether its benefit warrants that access and whether its update mechanism can change behavior remotely.
  • Automated security findings need experts. AI can expand testing coverage, but severity, exploitability and false positives still require human review.
  • Patch from the authoritative notice. For products such as Kiteworks and Cloudflare services, applicability depends on the specific version, plan and deployment; use the vendor advisory instead of guessing from a headline.
