Each portrait is prepared, exposed and processed through a hands-on chemical sequence, resulting in a one-of-a-kind image on a sheet of metal—not a conventional print made from a negative.
How wet-plate collodion turns a sitting into a photograph
In wet-plate collodion photography, the plate is coated with light-sensitive collodion, sensitized, placed in the camera for exposure, and developed while it is still wet. That sequence puts chemistry directly into the act of making the portrait: the image is formed on a prepared plate rather than captured on manufactured film or a digital sensor.

Kapoor describes working with a large-format camera, chemistry and a darkroom to make each image on the spot. The general sequence above describes wet-plate collodion practice; it should not be read as a precise account of Kapoor’s individual recipe or every step in his darkroom.
The result is a unique image on metal. A separate US studio’s tintype FAQ also describes tintypes as metal plates processed while wet, with washing, drying and varnishing as finishing steps. Those details offer general context, not confirmation of Kapoor’s finishing process.

What the portrait session is like
The sitter chooses how to appear
Kapoor says he invites people to sit for portraits and gives them complete autonomy over how they pose. The process is slow and conscious, which he says helps build a connection among the photographer, camera and subject. Rather than treating the sitter as a passive subject, his account puts their choices at the centre of the encounter.
A longer exposure, shaped by conditions
Kapoor says the average exposure for his project is about 12 seconds. That figure describes his stated practice, not a standard exposure time for tintypes generally. He also embraces imperfections arising amid North India’s dynamic weather and volatile chemistry; the presence of an artifact in a particular plate does not, on its own, establish a specific chemical cause.

What makes Kapoor’s portraits distinct
Kapoor describes the work as an ongoing body of portraits about place, community and relationships. He calls the images “aura/spirit pictures” and uses the language of “darshan” and an exchange of sight to explain his interpretation of portrait-making. Those terms express the artist’s perspective, not an objective property guaranteed by the photographic process.

Delhi’s wet-plate history is broader than one studio
A 2022 Mint feature on Class of Yesterday describes photographer Sarang Sena’s wet-plate experience in Sainik Farms, Delhi, including chemistry prepared fresh in a chemical laboratory and brought to the darkroom. It is a separate photographer and studio from Kapoor’s home-studio practice. The article records a local example from 2022; it does not establish that the studio is currently operating or that it is connected to Kapoor.
