The Imperial Woodpecker (Campephilus imperialis) has not been brought back as a living species. Researchers led by Joshua Medina have instead reconstructed Mexico’s largest woodpecker as an animated, downloadable 3D specimen from a museum bird, historical measurements and the only known film of a living individual. The peer-reviewed study was published on 25 September 2026 in Natural History Collections and Museomics.
What was created
The project includes a detailed 3D body model, a separate skeleton and animations showing movements such as climbing, launching, flying and foraging. The files are available to view and download through Sketchfab. The Moore Laboratory of Zoology says downloads are freely available for creative and nonprofit use.

This is a digital reconstruction of an extinct—or at least unconfirmed in the wild—bird, not evidence of a surviving population. The Imperial Woodpecker was last documented in 1956, and no reliable current population estimate exists.

How researchers built the model
A museum specimen supplied the geometry
The team began with a female specimen, catalogued as MLZ:Bird 20609, held at Occidental College’s Moore Laboratory of Zoology. They photographed it 288 times from different angles and processed those images with photogrammetry. That method reconstructs three-dimensional shape from overlapping photographs; in this project it captured the preserved specimen’s external geometry with sub-millimetre accuracy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Researchers also measured the head, bill, body, wings and tail. Those measurements anchor the proportions instead of leaving the model dependent on artistic guesswork.
Film and related specimens filled gaps
Taxidermied birds and William L. Rhein’s surviving 1956 16-mm film supplied visual and behavioural references. The film shows a female climbing, launching, flying and foraging, giving the animators rare evidence about how the species moved in life.

Feathers were the most difficult feature to recreate. Individual feather forms were modelled from living Pileated Woodpeckers, then resized and adjusted to the documented Imperial Woodpecker proportions. Soft tissue and flight kinematics were estimated from living relatives because those features cannot be recovered directly from a taxidermied skin.

How accurate is the 3D specimen?
Its accuracy depends on which part you mean. The underlying body shape is strongly tied to a real specimen and measured dimensions. The feather surface, soft anatomy and animated flight cycle are informed reconstructions. The authors explicitly state that the model is based on one female and that some anatomy and motion rely on estimation.

| Element | Evidence used | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Overall body proportions | 288 photographs and direct measurements of MLZ:Bird 20609 | High-confidence representation of the preserved female specimen’s shape |
| Head, bill, wings and tail dimensions | Measurements taken by the research team | Documented proportions rather than visual invention |
| Feather arrangement and individual feather forms | Pileated Woodpecker feathers resized to Imperial Woodpecker proportions | Reasoned reconstruction; not a scan of a living Imperial Woodpecker |
| Soft tissue | Comparisons with living relatives | Informed estimation |
| Flight and other animations | 1956 film plus observations of related woodpeckers | Behaviourally grounded but not a measured motion capture of the species |
The model is therefore best described as a transparent scientific reconstruction: unusually well documented for an extinct bird, but not a complete record of every feature of a living animal. It represents one female, so it should not automatically be treated as a universal model for sex, age or individual variation.
Can you view or download it?
- Open the Imperial Woodpecker project on Sketchfab.
- Use the viewer to rotate the specimen, inspect the anatomy and play the supplied animations.
- Choose the download option when available for the model or skeleton files.
- For creative or nonprofit work, follow the reuse terms stated by the Moore Laboratory project page and retain the project’s attribution information.
Availability and file formats can change as the hosting page is updated. Download access does not turn inferred feathers or motion into direct observations; educational materials should label those elements as reconstruction.

What happened to Mexico’s largest woodpecker?
The historical record points to a combination of persecution and habitat loss. Rhein’s film was made in Mexican conifer forest at an elevation of 2,700–2,900 metres, according to an analysis published by Escalante and colleagues in 2011. That analysis found the area had been logged repeatedly by 2010.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe species’ disappearance was not documented through a single confirmed final sighting. Instead, hunting and the destruction and fragmentation of high-elevation forest are identified as likely major drivers. Because the bird has not been confirmed in the wild since 1956, responsible accounts describe it as probably extinct or not confirmed rather than “rediscovered.”

Why the skeleton matters
A 2021 study documented an overlooked Imperial Woodpecker skeleton at the Natural History Museum in Tring and described it as one of very few known worldwide. Such specimens are important because they preserve anatomical evidence that skins and photographs cannot provide. The new digital project’s separate skeleton makes that kind of evidence easier to inspect, teach and incorporate into future comparative work.
What this project changes for researchers and educators
- Access: Students and researchers can examine a rare species without handling fragile museum material.
- Reproducibility: The photographic basis, measurements and reconstruction choices make the result easier to evaluate than an unreferenced illustration.
- Uncertainty: Separating scanned geometry from inferred feathers and motion provides a model for documenting extinct-animal visualisations honestly.
- Reuse: Public files support classroom demonstrations, museum interpretation and nonprofit creative projects under the stated terms.
Future reconstructions can be compared on the number and sex of source specimens, whether anatomy was directly scanned or inferred, use of historical film, disclosure of uncertainty, file-access terms and whether animations are biomechanically measured or primarily illustrative.
The bottom line
The Imperial Woodpecker now exists as a detailed, public digital specimen built from a real museum bird and rare historical evidence. Its measured body geometry is its strongest foundation; its feathers, soft anatomy and flight are carefully reasoned approximations. Viewing the model is a way to study and remember a lost species—not proof that the bird has returned to Mexico’s forests.
