Immich is the better general-purpose choice if you need automatic phone backup, multiple users, sharing, external folders, broad hardware support, and deep search. ZimaOS Photos is the better fit when your originals already sit on a ZimaOS NAS and you want those folders indexed in place through one integrated interface. Immich offers more capabilities and portability, but you operate more services. ZimaOS Photos is simpler to start, while tying the photo workflow to ZimaOS.

What each product actually is

Immich: a portable, full-stack photo library

Immich is an open-source photo and video manager licensed under AGPL v3. It is built to be deployed on a server you control rather than consumed as a hosted account. The feature set covers the complete lifecycle: camera uploads, web uploads, organization, search, sharing, transcoding, external folders, an API and operational backups.

The project is under active development. That is useful when you want new capabilities, but it also means upgrades can change behavior and introduce bugs. Treat version updates as server maintenance: read release notes, keep a restorable database backup and test upgrades before making them routine for a large family library.

ZimaOS Photos: an integrated view over NAS folders

ZimaOS Photos is part of the ZimaOS NAS experience. You select source folders, and the service indexes them without moving or copying the original files. The same files can remain available to other NAS applications while Photos presents a photo wall, timeline, map, collections and local AI-search views.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That design is intentionally narrower than a portable photo stack. It is attractive when your storage decision is already “run a ZimaOS NAS” and you want the shortest path from existing folders to a searchable gallery. It is not a standalone package you can install on any NAS operating system.

Platform portability and lock-in

Where Immich can run

Immich is designed for Linux or other Unix-like 64-bit hosts and supports both amd64 and arm64. That covers many home servers, virtual machines, single-board systems and NAS appliances that can run the required containerized services. The practical benefit is choice: you can change hardware or operating system without changing the photo product, provided the new host can run Immich and you migrate its data correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Portability does not remove responsibility. You still need to supply persistent storage, keep the application and database services running, expose the mobile and web interfaces safely, and monitor disk space and background jobs.

Where ZimaOS Photos can run

ZimaOS Photos requires ZimaOS. ZimaOS is positioned as a focused, open NAS operating system for x86-64 hardware, with an app store and support for third-party Docker workloads. If you already own a compatible ZimaOS machine, this integration avoids assembling a separate photo application and storage stack.

The trade-off is platform dependence. Moving away from ZimaOS means recreating the indexing and presentation layer elsewhere. Your originals remain ordinary files, so they are portable; the Photos catalog, generated data and configuration still need their own migration plan.

Using existing folders without moving originals

ZimaOS Photos in-place indexing

In-place indexing is ZimaOS Photos’ clearest advantage. Select the folders that contain your pictures and videos, and the service builds its views from those locations. It does not make a second copy of every original merely to display a gallery. This is useful when folders are already organized by year, event or household member, or when another NAS service must continue reading the same paths.

Indexing is not the same as backup. If a disk fails, the indexed catalog cannot recreate the missing originals. Keep a second copy of the source folders on separate storage.

Immich external libraries

Immich can also show files that it does not upload into its managed library through external libraries. The source directory must be mounted into the Immich container, then scanned. This gives you a unified search and browsing experience while preserving the existing directory as the source of truth.

Mounting introduces administration work: the container needs a stable path, read permissions, and a scan schedule or manual scan process. If the mount disappears, the photos may vanish from the interface even though the files still exist. Managed uploads are simpler for phone backup because Immich controls the destination, while external libraries are better when another system already owns the folder layout.

Phone backup and upload workflows

Why Immich is stronger for camera roll protection

Immich’s mobile application is designed for backup from a phone. The documented feature set includes mobile backup and automatic backup when the app is opened, plus web uploads. You can use it as the central destination for several household phones instead of manually copying each camera roll.

Before relying on automatic backup, verify that the phone can reach the server, that the account has enough quota and that the server remains reachable when you are away from home. Cellular restrictions, battery-saving modes and an unreachable home connection can delay uploads. A backup is complete only after the server has received the files and you have verified that they are present in storage.

What ZimaOS Photos is optimized for

ZimaOS Photos is primarily an index and viewing layer for NAS folders. If your phone already uploads to a shared NAS directory through another method, Photos can index the result. The available product description does not establish Immich-level mobile backup controls, so choose it for centralized folder browsing rather than assuming it will replace a dedicated camera-upload workflow.

Accounts, sharing and collaboration

Immich documents multiple users, public links, partner sharing and read-only galleries. That combination supports several patterns: private libraries for each account, a shared view for partners, a link to a selected event, or a gallery that visitors can view without editing. OAuth support and API keys are available for integrations, while the web and mobile clients cover ordinary household use.

ZimaOS Photos’ documented strengths are its NAS views and local search. The comparison material does not describe an equivalent set of public-link, partner-sharing and multi-user controls. If relatives need independent accounts or you regularly send browser-based albums outside your home, Immich is the safer fit. If everyone simply browses one NAS and sharing is handled outside the photo application, ZimaOS Photos may be sufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search, AI and organization

Immich discovery tools

Immich combines conventional metadata search with machine-learning discovery. Its documented capabilities include searches by metadata, objects, faces and CLIP embeddings; facial recognition and clustering; map views; stacked photos; folder view; and support for RAW files and metadata. Motion photos are supported as well. These features let you find “people at the beach” or filter by camera metadata instead of remembering the original folder.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Machine-learning jobs consume CPU, memory and storage. Face and object indexes are derived data, not replacements for originals. Rebuilding them after a failure can take time, so include the database and application data in your backup plan.

ZimaOS Photos discovery tools

ZimaOS Photos presents a photo wall, timeline, map and collections, together with local AI search. The interface is well suited to browsing a large NAS archive chronologically or by location while keeping source folders untouched. The documented feature description is less expansive than Immich’s matrix, particularly around APIs, partner accounts and the range of upload and sharing controls.

Hardware, memory and storage requirements

Immich’s published baseline

Immich lists a minimum of 6 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores. Its recommended configuration is 8 GB of RAM and 4 cores. Those figures describe the server, not just the web interface: thumbnail creation, video transcoding, database work and machine-learning tasks run on the host.

Immich also states that thumbnails and transcoded video increase library size by about 10–20% on average. The percentage is an average, not a guarantee; a library dominated by long videos or high-resolution RAW files can differ substantially. Reserve capacity for originals plus generated media, database growth and temporary processing space.

ZimaOS capacity planning

A separate minimum for ZimaOS Photos is not stated in the available product material. Plan around the ZimaOS system requirements and the specific NAS model, then add headroom for indexing and local AI search. Because Photos indexes existing folders, you avoid a second set of original files, but indexes, thumbnails and operating-system data still consume disk space.

Choosing a host

  • Small Immich library: meet the 6 GB/2-core minimum only if you accept slower background processing and have modest expectations for simultaneous users.
  • Family library or frequent video uploads: target the 8 GB/4-core recommendation or better, especially when face recognition and transcoding will run regularly.
  • ZimaOS Photos: choose a supported x86-64 ZimaOS NAS with enough memory and storage for the operating system, originals and generated indexes.
  • Any option: use redundant storage where possible, monitor free space and budget for an independent backup destination.

Maintenance and day-to-day operating cost

Running Immich

Immich is an application stack, not a single folder viewer. You maintain the server version, database, machine-learning components, persistent volumes and reverse-proxy or network access. The project documents database backups, hardware transcoding, monitoring, API access and command-line upload, but those features still need configuration and testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set a maintenance routine: record the installed version, back up the database and configuration before upgrades, confirm that storage mounts are present, and check that background jobs complete. Hardware transcoding can reduce CPU load for video, but it requires compatible hardware and correct configuration; it is not automatically available on every host.

Running ZimaOS Photos

ZimaOS Photos reduces the number of independent components you operate because the NAS platform supplies the surrounding management experience. Updates, storage permissions and app behavior are still your responsibility, and a ZimaOS failure can affect both the photo interface and other NAS services. Keep exports or copies of your originals outside the NAS so a platform problem does not become a data-loss event.

Backups and recovery: neither product is the backup

A photo manager organizes and serves data; it does not automatically provide a complete backup strategy. Immich’s own documentation explicitly warns: “Do not use it as the only way to store your photos and videos!” The same principle applies to ZimaOS Photos.

Protect three categories separately:

  • Original photos and videos: keep at least one independent copy on separate storage, and preferably another copy in a different location.
  • Application data: back up the Immich database and configuration, or the equivalent ZimaOS Photos catalog and settings available on your system.
  • Generated data: thumbnails, transcoded videos and AI indexes can often be rebuilt, but retaining them shortens recovery time and preserves your current organization.

Perform a restore test rather than assuming a successful backup job is enough. A usable test confirms that you can retrieve original files, reinstall the application or platform, restore the database, reconnect storage paths and sign in to the recovered service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step-by-step: deciding and deploying Immich

  1. Confirm the host. Use a 64-bit Linux or Unix-like system on amd64 or arm64. Check that it has at least 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores; plan for 8 GB and 4 cores for a smoother experience.
  2. Plan storage paths. Separate the location for originals from the application and database data when practical. Include an estimate for the additional 10–20% average space used by thumbnails and transcoded video.
  3. Install the server stack. Follow Immich’s current installation method for your host and create persistent storage for the application and database. Do not place the only copy of originals inside a disposable container volume.
  4. Create accounts and secure access. Add household users, configure the network path and enable the authentication method you intend to use. If remote access is needed, protect it with a properly secured connection rather than exposing an unprotected service.
  5. Configure mobile backup. Sign in to the mobile app, choose the camera folders to back up and leave the app open long enough to verify an upload. Confirm the server copy before deleting anything from the phone.
  6. Add external libraries if needed. Mount each existing source directory into the container with suitable permissions, then run a scan. Keep the mount path stable so future scans and upgrades continue to find the files.
  7. Enable discovery features selectively. Let thumbnails, face clustering, object recognition and CLIP indexing run in stages if the library is large. Watch CPU, memory and disk usage during the initial import.
  8. Back up before upgrades. Export or copy the database and configuration, record the version, update during a maintenance window and verify logins, mobile uploads, searches and shares afterward.

Step-by-step: deciding and deploying ZimaOS Photos

  1. Verify platform compatibility. Confirm that the NAS runs ZimaOS on supported x86-64 hardware and that its storage pool has room for originals, indexes and system data.
  2. Organize source folders. Decide which existing directories Photos should index. Keep originals in their established locations if other services depend on those paths.
  3. Select folders for indexing. In the ZimaOS Photos interface, add the chosen source folders. The service indexes them in place rather than moving or copying the originals.
  4. Allow the first index to finish. A large archive may take time to appear across the photo wall, timeline, map and collections. Avoid renaming or relocating folders during the initial pass.
  5. Use local AI search. Test searches against representative photos and check that the results match your privacy expectations, since processing is performed on the local system.
  6. Protect the NAS. Back up the source folders to independent storage and document the ZimaOS configuration so a hardware or operating-system replacement does not strand your files.

Which one should you choose?

Choose Immich when these priorities dominate

  • You want automatic camera-roll backup from one or more phones.
  • You need separate users, partner sharing, public links or read-only galleries.
  • You want to run on hardware or an operating system other than ZimaOS.
  • Your archive is spread across existing folders and you are willing to mount and scan them.
  • Search by faces, objects, CLIP concepts, metadata and maps is important.
  • You need an API, command-line uploads, OAuth or monitoring integrations.

Choose ZimaOS Photos when these priorities dominate

  • Your originals already live on a ZimaOS NAS.
  • You want selected folders indexed without moving or duplicating files.
  • A photo wall, timeline, map, collections and local AI search cover your needs.
  • You prefer an integrated NAS interface over assembling and maintaining a separate application stack.
  • You accept that the photo workflow is tied to ZimaOS and its supported hardware.

Can ZimaOS Photos replace Google Photos?

It can replace the private, self-hosted parts of a Google Photos workflow: a searchable gallery, timeline browsing, maps, collections and local storage under your control. It does not provide the same hosted convenience by default. You supply the NAS, network access, updates, storage expansion and backups, and you remain responsible for phone-upload reliability and remote access.

Immich is closer to a complete self-hosted Google Photos alternative because mobile backup, accounts, sharing and advanced discovery are central features. ZimaOS Photos is closer to a NAS-native catalog for folders you already own. Neither service removes the need for independent copies of irreplaceable originals.

Bottom line

Pick Immich for the broader, more portable photo platform: it is the stronger answer for mobile backup, multi-user households, external libraries, rich search, sharing and integrations, provided you are prepared to maintain an application and database. Pick ZimaOS Photos when a ZimaOS NAS is already your storage foundation and in-place indexing with minimal setup matters more than portability and feature depth. In both cases, treat originals and recoverable backups as the system of record, and treat the photo manager as the interface built on top.
