The IMF’s October 2026 outlook projects India’s economy to grow 7% in each of fiscal years 2026–27 and 2027–28. Those estimates are higher than the IMF’s July projections of 6.4% for FY2026–27 and 6.7% for FY2027–28, according to contemporaneous reporting by The Indian Express.

Fiscal year July 2026 projection October 2026 projection Change
FY2026–27 6.4% 7% +0.6 percentage points
FY2027–28 6.7% 7% +0.3 percentage points

These are forecasts, not measured outcomes. The cited reporting gives point estimates, not a confidence interval or a quantified India-specific risk range.

Why did the IMF raise its projections?

The October outlook attributes the FY27 upgrade to stronger-than-expected momentum, resilient domestic demand and robust services activity. In a statement quoted by The Indian Express, the IMF also pointed to favourable demographic dynamics, a large and expanding domestic market, and continued structural reforms as support for stronger growth potential. These are the IMF’s stated explanations, not separate estimates of how much each factor contributes.

How these figures differ from calendar-year forecasts

FY2026–27 and FY2027–28 are Indian fiscal years, not calendar years. They should not be read as forecasts for 2026 and 2027. The IMF’s July briefing separately projected 6.4% growth for calendar 2026 and described medium-term growth at around 6.5%; those figures have different time horizons and are not direct substitutes for the fiscal-year estimates. See the IMF World Economic Outlook database, which is released in April and October and includes country economic indicators.

What the revisions do—and do not—say

The revised figures indicate that the IMF’s assessment of India’s near-term growth prospects improved between July and October 2026. They do not establish what growth India will ultimately record: projections can change as economic conditions and data evolve. The reported figures here are attributed to the IMF’s October update through contemporaneous coverage; the underlying October India table is not reproduced in that reporting.
