“Image for portfolio” can mean several different things. You may need a featured image for a portfolio page, a licensed headshot, stock media for a portfolio photo shoot, or an artwork record used as a cover image. The correct choice depends on your portfolio type, publishing platform, image subject and intended use. Confirm those four details before downloading or commissioning anything.
First, identify what “image for portfolio” means
Use the interpretation that matches your project. These choices have different rights, quality requirements and workflows.

What to clarify before choosing an image
Portfolio type
A designer’s case-study image, an actor’s headshot and an artist’s catalog cover are not interchangeable. State whether the portfolio is for design work, photography, illustration, writing, a professional profile, or an institutional collection.
Platform and image field
Find out where the file will be uploaded: a content-management system, a hosted portfolio builder, a PDF, a social profile or a printed presentation. Some systems have a dedicated Featured Image field. Alliance Theme documentation, for example, instructs users to create a portfolio item and upload its image through the Featured Image option. That image may become the card, archive thumbnail or social preview, so verify the platform’s crop and file-size behavior before exporting.

Subject and intended use
Describe the subject precisely: your face, a completed project, a process photograph, a background texture, a client website or a historical artwork. Then list every use you expect: portfolio page, proposal PDF, social post, advertising, case-study download, personal profile or client presentation. A license limited to personal use is not enough for a commercial portfolio.
Geography, audience and duration
Ask whether the image will be public worldwide, restricted to logged-in clients or printed. Also check whether the permission is perpetual or expires. Keep the invoice, license text, release and correspondence with the project files.
How to use your own work as a portfolio image
- Inventory third-party material. Check fonts, stock photos, icons, templates, music, logos and screenshots inside the work. Your right to show a finished design may not automatically include every component.
- Obtain subject permissions. Get a model release for identifiable people when your planned use requires one. Confirm that client contracts allow you to display the work publicly.
- Create two masters. Keep an untouched, high-resolution original and make a separate web export. Never overwrite the master with a crop or compression pass.
- Prepare useful variants. Export the main portfolio image, a thumbnail and, if needed, a portrait or landscape crop. Check each crop at the size visitors will actually see.
- Add descriptive metadata. Use a meaningful filename and alt text that describes the image’s content and role. Do not place important text only inside the image.
- Upload through the platform’s intended field. If the platform distinguishes a portfolio image from a Featured Image, use the field that controls the listing and social preview. Publish a draft and inspect the result on desktop and mobile.
How to commission a headshot
Ask the photographer for a written license rather than relying on an assumption that payment transfers copyright. Solaris Studios describes a non-exclusive headshot license covering commercial and personal use while the studio retains copyright, allowing portfolio and promotional use. That arrangement can work well, but the exact permitted media, territory and duration should appear in your agreement.

Questions to put in the agreement
- May you use the image on your website, portfolio, proposals, social accounts and advertising?
- May you crop, resize, retouch or convert the file?
- Is the license non-exclusive, and may the photographer license the image to others?
- Are there limits on territory, time, industry or paid promotion?
- Will you receive a large original plus web-ready files?
- May the photographer display your image in their own portfolio?
Do not confuse a photographer’s permission to show your headshot with permission to use a client’s image in your own marketing. The parties and rights are different.

If a client sends an image for editing, ask whether you may display the result. Clip Images Media states that images supplied by clients for paid projects are used only for the requested editing workflow and are not placed on its website, portfolio or marketing materials without permission; public use may be approved for a trial or sample image. Adopt the same discipline: obtain explicit, written approval before adding a client file or deliverable to your public portfolio.
Record the permission
- Name the image or project covered.
- Specify the channels: website, case study, social media, advertising or print.
- State whether the client may revoke permission and how removal requests work.
- Credit the client, photographer or other rights holder where required.
When stock media is the right source
Stock can fill a visual gap when you need a setting, prop or model for a portfolio photo shoot. Treat the displayed resolution as a choice, not proof that every asset has both formats or that every license allows every use.

Stock checklist
- Read the asset’s current license, not just the search-result description.
- Confirm commercial website, marketing and portfolio use.
- Check model, property, trademark and editorial-use restrictions.
- Save the asset ID, download date and license receipt.
- Do not imply that a stock model is your client or employee.
When “portfolio image” is an artwork record
In a museum context, “cover image for portfolio” can describe the role of an artwork rather than a web-design field. The National Gallery of Art catalogs Leona Pierce Frasconi’s 1950 work as a cover image for the portfolio People in Print and states that the media is not available for download. A catalog record is therefore not an automatic reproduction license. Link to the record when appropriate and contact the institution about image permissions instead of copying a protected preview.
Capturing a live website as a portfolio image
A screenshot can document a project, but a browser capture includes more than the page itself: cookie banners, newsletter popups, chat widgets, loading states and bot checks. For a repeatable result, use a consistent viewport and wait for the page’s meaningful content before saving the file.

- Open the project at its public URL and confirm that you are allowed to display it.
- Choose a viewport that matches your portfolio layout; capture desktop and mobile variants when responsive behavior is part of the work.
- Dismiss consent UI and close overlays without hiding content you need to demonstrate.
- Wait for lazy-loaded images, fonts and animations to settle.
- Capture the full page or a specific element, then inspect the top, middle and bottom for missing assets.
- Keep the original capture and create a compressed presentation copy.

Troubleshooting captures
- Consent banner remains: confirm consent handling is enabled and identify whether the site uses a platform outside the known set; use custom selectors or CSS when appropriate.
- Images are missing: wait for a selector or network idle, and verify that the page does not require authentication or a blocked resource.
- Only the visible area appears: request a full-page capture rather than a viewport-only image.
- A blank or bot-check page is returned: treat the verdict headers as the diagnostic result; a failed or bot-blocked page is not evidence that the portfolio asset is valid.
- The result is stale: lower the cache TTL or disable caching for that URL.
- The PDF breaks across pages: set paper size, margins, orientation and page ranges explicitly, then inspect page breaks before publishing.

Pre-publication checklist
- The image clearly represents the work or person described.
- You can identify the creator, license or permission record.
- Commercial, promotional and portfolio uses are covered where needed.
- Client, model, property and trademark concerns are resolved.
- The crop works in the actual portfolio card, detail page and social preview.
- The file is sharp at display size, compressed appropriately and backed up in its original form.
- Alt text, caption and credit information are accurate.
- A screenshot does not expose private data, unfinished content or unauthorized client material.
FAQ
Can I use any image I find online as my portfolio image?
No. Finding an image online does not establish permission to copy, modify or publish it. Use your own work, obtain a license or request permission from the rights holder.
Is a Featured Image the same as the main project image?
Not always. A platform may use Featured Image for listings and previews while the project page contains additional images. Check the platform’s documented fields and preview both contexts.

Should I choose 4K or HD for a portfolio photo shoot?
Choose the largest format your license and workflow support, then export a web-sized copy. The correct choice also depends on whether the image will be cropped, printed or used only online.
Can a museum collection record be downloaded and reused?
Not necessarily. The National Gallery of Art record for the 1950 Frasconi work says its media is not available for download. Contact the institution about authorized reproductions.
