I’m Raising My Four Kids in Spain—and I’ve Become a Less Controlling Parent

Since raising my four children in Spain, I’ve noticed myself stepping in less often. I give them more chances to do things for themselves, make manageable choices and learn from small mistakes. That is a change in how I parent—not proof that Spain makes parents less controlling. For me, the useful distinction is between loosening my grip and letting go of guidance: my children still need boundaries, but they do not need me to direct every step.

What changed in my parenting

I used to feel responsible for keeping more of family life under control: anticipating problems, correcting the way a task was done and making decisions before my children had a chance to try. Here, I have become more willing to pause. If a task is safe and appropriate for a child’s age, I can let them attempt it rather than taking over because it would be quicker or neater if I did it myself.

That does not mean I have stopped caring about how things turn out. It means I am trying to separate what truly needs my intervention from what is merely uncomfortable for me to watch. A child doing something slowly, imperfectly or in a different order is not automatically a reason for a parent to step in.

This is my experience as a mother raising four children in Spain. It is not a claim that Spanish culture caused the change, or that other families here parent the same way. Family habits reflect individual children, parents and circumstances; a national label cannot explain one household.

What autonomy can look like in everyday life

A 2015 study by M-A de la Caba-Collado and R. López-Atxurra asked 272 parents of children aged 10–14 about autonomy and how they encouraged it. The authors used a descriptive, cross-sectional mixed design, so the findings describe that surveyed group rather than all parents in Spain. In the study, autonomy most often meant practical independence and responsibility at home and school—not simply letting children do whatever they want. The study, published in Revista de Educación, also considered thinking and decision-making, social relationships and emotional dimensions.

The English abstract reports that “Giving children the opportunity to perform tasks and teaching them right from wrong were the strategies found to have most weight, while setting limits and controlling had less.” That describes the study sample; it is not a national ranking of Spanish parenting styles. It does, however, capture a distinction I am trying to make in my own home: children can practise responsibility while an adult still teaches, advises and sets limits.

Give a child a real task

Independence grows through practice. Depending on a child’s age and abilities, that might mean looking after their belongings, helping with a household job or managing a suitable responsibility at school. The point is not to offload adult work onto a child. It is to offer a task they can reasonably try, then allow enough time for them to do it.

Teach, then leave room to decide

Children need help understanding right and wrong, and they may need advice before making a choice. But explaining a reason is different from controlling every detail. Where the stakes are low, I can give guidance and let my children make an age-appropriate decision. If the choice affects safety or other people, I can set a firmer limit.

Less controlling does not mean boundary-free

There is a false choice between directing every move and leaving children entirely on their own. The OECD’s account of positive parenting includes nurturing and empowerment alongside recognition, guidance and boundaries. In Evolving Family Models in Spain (2022), the OECD defines it this way: “Positive parenting focuses on parental behaviour based on the best interest of the child that is nurturing, empowering, non-violent and provides recognition and guidance which involves setting of boundaries to enable the full development of the child.”

In practice, I am trying to use boundaries for what matters rather than treating every preference as a rule to enforce. A child’s safety, the impact on others and responsibilities that genuinely belong to the child may call for a clear limit or follow-through. The order in which a child completes a harmless task may not. The boundary remains; I am learning not to add unnecessary control around it.

Why the same approach will not fit every child or moment

The 2015 study found that parents’ ideas about autonomy and their reported strategies varied with gender and education level. It also found greater emphasis on control among parents of children in secondary school than among parents of younger children, while expectations that children contribute to household tasks were lower for the secondary-school group. Those findings are a reminder that age and family context matter; they do not prescribe a single correct approach.

Children differ, too. A child who is ready to manage one responsibility may still need close help with another. Autonomy is not a timetable that every child must follow at the same pace. For me, the practical question is whether I am stepping in because the child needs support—or because I am trying to prevent every delay, mistake or frustration.

Other Spanish-family studies offer context, but not a verdict on my family. A study of parenting practices during COVID-19 reported that mothers in its sample were more likely than fathers to encourage independence; its pandemic setting limits how confidently that can be applied to ordinary family life. A comparative paper on beliefs about child-rearing in Spain and Peru likewise treats parenting beliefs as culturally situated, but cannot establish what every family in either country does. (COVID-19 study; Spain–Peru comparison.)

Care pressures shape family life, too

How much room a parent has to slow down and let a child practise is shaped by time, work and care responsibilities—not just by parenting ideals. A 23 June 2026 Ministry of Equality summary of the Estado de las Paternidades en España 2026 report gives one snapshot of those pressures. Among that report’s respondents, 40% of mothers and 26% of fathers said they had left work to provide care; 67% of mothers and 62% of fathers said they lacked enough time for rest, self-care and leisure. Forty-two percent cited difficulty reconciling care with employment, while 89% said caring for children or loved ones was among the things they most enjoyed in life. These are survey findings, not national administrative counts or evidence about my household. The ministry describes fatherhood as becoming more involved and present while persistent inequalities and care burdens remain. The ministry’s summary makes clear why parenting choices cannot be separated neatly from the conditions families are living with.

How I’m practising a lighter grip

I am not aiming to withdraw or to make my children responsible for everything. I am trying to make my help more deliberate. In the moment, that can mean asking myself:

  • Is this unsafe or unfair to someone, or merely not being done my way?
  • Can my child reasonably try this task with the skills they have now?
  • Would guidance or a clear boundary be enough, rather than taking over?
  • Can I give the child time to finish, even if it takes longer than doing it myself?

Sometimes the answer is still to step in. A boundary is not a failure of autonomy, and children do not learn responsibility from being left unsupported. But when the stakes are small, giving them room to act is a way of showing that I trust them to learn. That is the change I recognise in myself: not less care, but less need to control every outcome.
