The crisis Terry Tao is describing is not that mathematics is ending. It is that artificial intelligence is changing who can produce mathematical arguments, how those arguments are checked, what counts as understanding and how universities, journals and funders should respond. Tao’s proposed “Math 2.0” keeps AI in the workflow while protecting mathematics’ reliability, explanatory power and role in guiding real-world decisions.
What crisis in mathematics is Terry Tao talking about?
Terence “Terry” Tao, a professor in UCLA’s Department of Mathematics, argues that the field is entering an institutional and epistemic transition. AI systems can now search for patterns, suggest lemmas, generate calculations and present arguments that would once have required substantial human labor. Some recent preprints describe discoveries made with AI assistance, and Tao has asked mathematicians to document those collaborations rather than treating them as an embarrassment or a novelty.

The immediate pressure is an excessive focus on having AI solve open problems. A solved problem is an important achievement, but mathematics has traditionally valued more than an answer: the concepts that make the answer intelligible, the connection to earlier literature, the ability to generalize a method and the confidence that other researchers can check and reuse the result. If automated systems become better at producing results than explaining them, the field must decide which of those functions it is willing to automate and which it must deliberately preserve.

Tao’s research spans harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, geometric and arithmetic combinatorics, analytic number theory, compressed sensing and algebraic combinatorics. His work crosses areas that use different techniques and communities, while his editorial work and books have made difficult methods accessible to a broad mathematical audience. That range gives him a practical reason to focus on how ideas move between subfields, not only on whether a machine can produce a formally valid output.

His October 2026 writing presents “Math 2.0” as a response to the current moment. Tao describes a historical “Math 1.0,” the present state shaped by heavy emphasis on automated solving, and a future in which AI sustains both the mathematical community and the role of understanding in applying mathematics to the real world. The proposal is collaboration and institutional adaptation, not a ban on software or a prediction that mathematicians will disappear.
What is Math 2.0?
Math 2.0 is best understood as a social and technical design problem. AI becomes a powerful research instrument, but the surrounding practices are rebuilt so that human mathematicians can audit, explain, teach and responsibly apply what the systems produce.
From answer production to durable understanding
In a purely answer-oriented model, success is a theorem, a counterexample or a numerical result. Tao’s emphasis adds a second test: can people understand why the result is true, where it fits in the literature and what assumptions make it useful? Explanations matter when a theorem is adapted to a physical model, an algorithm, a security system or a policy decision.

From individual work to documented collaboration
AI-assisted results often combine a human’s choice of problem, specialist knowledge and familiarity with earlier papers with a system’s ability to search or generate possibilities. Proper records should identify which parts were proposed by a person, which were machine-generated, what failed, and how the final argument was checked. That documentation lets others reproduce the path rather than seeing only a polished final proof.
From informal confidence to checkable evidence
AI can produce fluent but incorrect mathematics. Math 2.0 therefore treats verification as infrastructure: formal statements, machine-checkable proofs where practical, independent review and clear references to prior results. The goal is not to force every piece of mathematics into one software system, but to make the level of certainty and the remaining uncertainty visible.
Traditional and AI-assisted mathematics compared
| Dimension | Traditional practice | AI-assisted or highly automated practice | Math 2.0 requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Produce a correct result and develop insight around it | Generate, search or optimize candidate results at much greater scale | Keep durable understanding alongside answer production |
| Method | Human reasoning, computation and published literature | Human direction combined with model-generated ideas, searches or proofs | Record the division of labor and preserve reproducible workflows |
| Reliability | Peer review, hand checking and community consensus | Outputs may be persuasive while containing hidden errors | Use formal verification, independent checks and explicit assumptions |
| Human role | Originator, solver, verifier and explainer | Problem selector, curator, verifier, interpreter and explainer | Retain responsibility for meaning, context and application |
| Institutional effect | Norms built around individual credit and conventional publication | Pressure on authorship, attribution, training and review | Update education, publishing, funding and credit for collaborative work |
Is AI going to replace mathematicians?
Tao’s argument does not support that conclusion. AI may replace portions of routine calculation, literature search or proof exploration, and it may let a small team investigate far more candidates than before. But deciding which question matters, recognizing a useful abstraction, connecting a result to prior work and explaining consequences remain human and community functions in the Math 2.0 vision.

The more realistic risk is a loss of expertise. If researchers, students and reviewers accept machine-generated arguments without learning the underlying ideas, the field could accumulate results that few people can teach, adapt or challenge. That would make mathematics less useful precisely when automated systems make it more prolific.

Can AI-generated proofs be trusted?
Trust depends on what “proof” means in a particular case. A natural-language argument generated by a model is a proposal for checking, not a guarantee. It can omit a hypothesis, misapply a theorem or invent a citation. A proof encoded in a formal system and accepted by a proof assistant provides a much stronger check of the encoded statement, although it still depends on correctly specifying the theorem, the software environment and any unformalized interpretation.
A reliable workflow should therefore include:
- Precise statements: define every object, hypothesis and domain before asking a system to solve or prove anything.
- Independent verification: have a human specialist or separate checking process examine the argument, especially at the points where a model made a leap.
- Formalization when feasible: translate critical claims into a proof assistant or another machine-checkable representation.
- Literature checks: verify that cited theorems and claimed novelty actually exist and apply under the stated conditions.
- Audit trails: retain prompts, generated attempts, revisions and the final checked proof so collaborators can reproduce the result.
This standard reflects a broader purpose of mathematics. In an October 2026 discussion hosted by Tao, Thomas Hales described consistency and mathematics’ unparalleled reliability in supporting science and civilization as the central value. AI increases the need to protect that standard; it does not lower it.

Why are people saying AI is on a “war footing”?
“War footing” is a metaphor for urgency, mobilization and compressed decision-making. Reporting on frontier AI development quotes former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon describing employees as operating on that footing and comparing the effort with a private Manhattan Project. The comparison highlights a race in which speed can collide with rigor and safety.
The phrase also has an established policy meaning. On April 23, 2024, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, “We will put the UK’s own defence industry on a war footing,” alongside £10 billion in munitions funding and a target of spending 2.5% of national output on defence by the end of the decade. That example shows why the wording signals organized resource allocation rather than a literal battlefield.

How institutions are responding
The debate is moving beyond individual mathematicians. Tao’s blog records a Simons Foundation effort built around workshops and initiatives for mathematics in the AI era. Such programs can help establish norms for crediting human–AI collaboration, train students to verify generated work, support shared formalization tools and give journals guidance on disclosure.
Universities and publishers will also have to address practical questions: Should a model be listed in a paper’s methods section? Who is accountable when an automated proof contains an error? How should grants evaluate work that includes extensive machine exploration? What kinds of mathematical understanding should students still be expected to develop unaided? Math 2.0 is incomplete unless those rules are developed alongside the software.
Which Terry Tao book should you read first?
For most readers: Solving Mathematical Problems: A Personal Perspective
Tao’s Solving Mathematical Problems: A Personal Perspective, in the Oxford University Press second edition, is the most natural starting point for understanding the problem-solving habits behind his public arguments. It focuses on strategies, structure and how to move from an apparent dead end to a workable approach rather than serving as a narrow specialist text.
For advanced students: Analysis I and Analysis II
These books are substantially more technical and are suited to readers with the background for rigorous undergraduate or early graduate analysis. They are useful if your goal is to study Tao’s mathematical exposition directly, not simply his views on AI.
Forthcoming: Six Math Essentials
Tao’s bibliography lists Six Math Essentials as forthcoming from Quanta Books in November 2026. That is a publication-date listing, not confirmation of a current retail edition, so readers should treat it as a future lead until the book is released.
The practical test for Math 2.0
The decisive question is not whether a machine can produce an impressive theorem. It is whether mathematicians can use that capability without surrendering the qualities that make mathematics dependable: checkability, explanation, historical context and shared understanding. Tao’s crisis is therefore a call to redesign the discipline around those qualities while taking advantage of automation, rather than choosing between uncritical adoption and outright rejection.
