Yes, Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader gives you room to role-play a villain: you can make cruel, self-serving, or Chaos-aligned decisions as a powerful figure shaping the Koronus Expanse. “Villain era” is a player’s framing, not an official game mode, and the game does not reduce morality to one simple evil meter. Its conviction system tracks ideological choices, with Heretical representing a Chaos-oriented path.

Can you play as a villain in Rogue Trader?

You can role-play a Rogue Trader who uses power ruthlessly, but that identity is expressed through choices rather than a dedicated villain class or mode. At launch, Owlcat Games described the player character as an adventurer with “a monolith of resources and power,” tasked with spreading the Imperium’s influence across the Koronus Expanse. That authority gives your decisions weight; it does not make every harsh choice part of the same ideological track.

The useful distinction is between how your character behaves and which conviction the game records. A decision can feel cruel or self-serving without necessarily being Heretical. The conviction system reflects ideological direction, so a villain role-play can be built around different motivations, not just Chaos.

What does the Heretical path represent?

Heretical is the game’s Chaos-oriented conviction. Owlcat Games has described it as closer to Chaos Undivided than allegiance to one specific Chaos god: “Heretical conviction is more Chaos Undivided rather than Tzeench.” The spelling is reproduced as it appears in Owlcat’s statement.

#1 Best Overall
Warhammer 40000, Wrath & Glory Core Rulebook, Roleplaying Game, 2+ Players
  • The new Rulebook focuses on the Gilead System, allowing you to tell your own stories in a society beset by daemonic invasion and internal corruption
  • Character Creation has been streamlined, with a focus on Frameworks. With so many choices of who and what you can play, you’ll want to decide the focus of your game early
  • The Factions Chapter is a primer on life in the 41st Millennium, detailing each of the organisations vying for supremacy in the Warp-torn Gilead System
  • English Version | 2+ Players | Ages 14+ | 60 to 90 Minute Playing Time

That makes Heretical a fitting choice if you want your Rogue Trader’s villainy to lean toward Chaos, but it is not a universal label for every ruthless act. The game’s choices award conviction points in different ways, and a third-party choice guide documents options associated with Heretical conviction across the story.

Examples of Heretical choices

Spoilers: The following guide-documented examples refer to story choices and outcomes, including events in Rykad Minoris.

  • Keeping the Blade Shard.
  • Leaving Rykad Minoris to become a daemon world.
  • Tormenting or killing characters.
  • Steering Nomos toward Heresy.

These examples illustrate the path’s tone, not a rule that every cruel decision earns Heretical conviction. The guide records varied options and point awards, so check the specific choice if you are trying to reach a particular conviction rank.

Do your choices change the ending?

Choices can contribute to different endings, but one decision should not be treated as a guaranteed ending trigger. A community wiki describes endings as dependent on hidden in-game flags, alongside quest completion and dialogue or action choices. For Nomos-related endings tied to a conviction, it says players need to complete related quests, guide Nomos through dialogue and actions, and reach a high rank in the relevant conviction.

That is a useful orientation rather than a complete, official trigger list. If you are pursuing a specific outcome, think in terms of a sustained run of relevant decisions and quest progress, not a single dramatic act.

Patch context for Heretical epilogues

Heretical epilogues have also been affected by fixes. Owlcat’s official Steam announcements page lists Hotfix 1.6.1.514 in July 2026, which addressed cases where some Heretical epilogues abruptly ended after certain choices. Because patches can change behavior, consult the live announcements before relying on advice tied to a particular version.

Optional setting background

You do not need a tabletop rulebook to follow the video game’s villainous choices. Owlcat says Rogue Trader drew on the Fantasy Flight Games tabletop RPG system, while much of the computer game was developed from scratch. A relevant Warhammer 40,000 tabletop RPG or setting book can be optional background, not a prerequisite for playing.
