A browser game can be ready to play and still be hard to get anyone to find. The Collective, an AI agent, says it built GUARDIAN: Galactic Battlefront as a no-install HTML canvas game, but its attempts to attract players ran into barriers on several platforms. One unfamiliar person eventually played; the account is a useful reminder that making a game easy to open and making it discoverable are different problems.
What happened when an AI agent tried to find players
The Collective describes GUARDIAN: Galactic Battlefront as a browser wave-shooter: move with the arrow keys, fire with the spacebar, and face a boss every fifth wave. It runs on a plain HTML page using canvas, so a player does not need to install a game client. That removes one step between seeing a link and playing, but it does not put the link in front of people.

The author says it tried Hacker News, Reddit, itch.io, Game Jolt, Newgrounds, and X. In its account, a new account could not post Show HN, Reddit registration was blocked at the IP level, some game portals required file uploads its tools could not attach, and its X account had no followers. Those are obstacles the author encountered—not universal rules about what every new user can post or which platforms accept a game.

The deadline passed with no outside payers. Separately, one unfamiliar person opened the game after following a tournament post, reached the wave-five boss, and died there. The player’s reported response was: “The level 5 boss got me.” The Collective calls this the entire outside traffic count. These figures and events are the author’s report, not independently audited analytics.

Where can a creator put a browser game?
The documented routes below answer a practical question—where a browser build can be published or announced—not the harder one of which venue will reliably bring players. The available sources do not provide comparable audience or conversion data.
| Venue | Technical fit and play experience | Announcement option or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| itch.io | Official creator documentation supports HTML, JavaScript, and CSS games. Upload a self-contained HTML file or a ZIP with index.html at its root; the project page can embed the game and offer embedded-play or click-to-play choices. itch.io HTML5 documentation |
itch.io identifies its Release announcements board as a place for creators to announce work. Its guidelines recommend screenshots for embedded browser games. These are publishing and posting options, not evidence of likely reach. itch.io quality guidelines |
| Newgrounds | Accepts HTML5 games submitted as ZIP files, with index.html at the ZIP root. Newgrounds game submission guidelines |
Its game guidelines state: “Most importantly, please do not share any games that were generated via an AI prompt.” Since The Collective identifies itself as an AI agent, the rule may apply depending on how this particular game was made. Check the current policy and the game’s creation history before submitting. |
| Hacker News, Reddit, X, and Game Jolt | The Collective reports attempts or barriers involving these services, but those anecdotes do not establish universal posting eligibility. The available documentation here does not verify a current Game Jolt upload route. | No comparable discovery or player-reach evidence is established for these venues. |
How to prepare an itch.io browser build
For a creator able to package the game files, itch.io’s documented HTML5 route is a concrete option:
Rank #2
- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
- Prepare either one self-contained HTML file or a ZIP archive containing the game.
- If using a ZIP, put
index.htmlat the archive’s top level, rather than inside a nested folder. - Upload the build as an HTML5 project and choose whether visitors play it embedded on the project page or click to launch it.
- Add screenshots that show the game clearly, then use itch.io’s Release announcements board if an announcement is appropriate.
The platform documentation explains how to publish and present the build; it does not promise that an upload or announcement will reach new players.
What this story does—and does not—show
A playable browser link lowers friction after someone encounters it. It cannot, by itself, create an audience. The Collective’s one reported outside player demonstrates what happened in this particular attempt; it is not a general measure of how often browser games convert links into play sessions.
Rank #3
- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
The author’s question was not simply how to build an audience. It was “where do you put a browser game so a stranger walks past it?” The evidence supports a useful answer at the level of mechanics: itch.io offers a browser-playable publishing path and a designated release-announcement board, while Newgrounds accepts HTML5 ZIP submissions subject to its stated AI-prompt restriction. It does not establish which place is most likely to produce a stranger’s click.
