Jon Martindale’s PCWorld feature, published September 23, 2026, is a confession. Martindale, who describes himself as a tech journalist of about 20 years, admits he does not always follow the advice he gives readers. His eight habits are not equally costly. Only a few put data or security at risk, or leave a real problem unfixed. The rest are workflow choices or matters of taste, and he presents them that way himself.

Habits that touch data and security
Buying a new drive instead of running a backup
Martindale buys a fresh storage drive before each Windows reinstall to lower the chance of losing files, and he keeps the older drives. The instinct is sound, but the article’s own logic shows the gap: a drive held in reserve is only useful if it contains a verified copy of your files. CISA’s guidance on protecting data on devices recommends backing up to an external hard drive or to a properly vetted cloud service. It also advises keeping an external drive stored safely when idle and disconnecting it when it is not actively backing up, because ransomware on the PC could otherwise reach it.

- Copy the folders you cannot replace, such as Documents, Pictures, Desktop, and any project folders, to an external drive or a vetted cloud service.
- Open several files from the copy, including large or recent ones, to confirm they are readable and complete.
- Store the backup somewhere other than the PC. Microsoft’s “Securing your device” guidance says important backups should be kept away from the local device.
- Disconnect the external drive once the backup finishes.
- Reinstall Windows only after the copy has been verified.
Whether the backup is local or cloud depends on what you can finish before the reinstall and how quickly you need files back. The sources reviewed here do not compare named providers, prices, or restore speeds.

Delayed graphics driver and BIOS updates
Martindale reports that his graphics drivers were last updated in early 2024 and his BIOS in late 2023. Those dates describe his own machine as of the feature’s September 2026 publication; the article does not report a problem caused by them. Microsoft’s “Keep your computer secure at home” guidance recommends keeping Windows and other software current, and that covers much of what readers should do with drivers delivered through Windows Update or the GPU maker’s software.
BIOS (or UEFI firmware) is handled differently. No universal update schedule is established by the official sources reviewed here. Check your PC or motherboard maker’s support page for the current firmware, read the release notes, and update when a release fixes a problem you have, addresses a compatibility need, or closes a security issue. Follow the vendor’s instructions exactly, since a failed firmware update is harder to recover from than a failed driver install.

Letting troubleshooting issues pile up
Martindale describes several symptoms he has lived with: boot behavior he has not resolved, a flickering monitor, and sluggish startup. He suspects a cause for at least one of them, but the article does not confirm it, and readers should not treat it as established. The lesson is not about any one component. An unexplained symptom that persists is worth a short, documented investigation.

- Write down what happens, when it started, and whether it happens on every boot or only sometimes.
- List what changed just before the symptom began, such as a driver, a new peripheral, a cable, or a Windows update.
- Check the physical connections first, including the monitor cable and any loose or damaged cables.
- Use Microsoft’s “Tips to improve PC performance in Windows” as a starting point for slowdowns, then contact the PC or component vendor if the problem persists.
Habits about performance and upkeep
Restarting only after the PC slows
Martindale usually sleeps his PC and restarts it after several weeks, once network, video, or browser performance degrades. That is a personal observation. The article does not show that a specific restart interval prevents slowdowns, and no source reviewed here establishes one.

What a restart can do is clear a problem that is already present, which is why it is useful as a diagnostic step. Microsoft’s “How to know it’s time for a new PC” guidance lists slow startup and shutdown, low storage, frequent fan noise, and consistently high CPU, memory, or disk usage as signs worth investigating. The same guidance says none of these alone proves the computer needs replacing. When you see them, work through the cause before deciding on new hardware, and treat a restart as one test among several.

The 38,000 unread emails
The 38,000 figure is Martindale’s own inbox. It is a memorable example, not a statistic about PC users in general. The useful point is the method. A large unread count stops being useful when it cannot be scanned, so readers who are missing messages can set filters that sort newsletters and automated alerts into their own folders, then review the important folder on a fixed schedule. The filter and the schedule matter more than the number.

Wired transfers from phone to PC
Martindale transfers files from his phone with a USB-C-to-A cable because it is convenient, even though transfers are slow. That is a trade-off he has chosen, not evidence that a cable is the wrong method. The article provides no controlled comparison of cable, network, or cloud transfer speeds, so it does not support a claim that a wireless route is faster or safer for your devices. Choose by the size of the transfer and how often you need it.

Martindale says he uses about 2,400 DPI and prefers the feel. The article also says many professional PC gamers use roughly 800 to 1,200 DPI. That range is the author’s statement; the article cites no independent source for it, so treat it as his description rather than an established benchmark. Sensitivity depends on the game, screen size, desk space, and the user. Adjust it in your mouse software or in each game’s settings, and test it in the task you care about most.

The cluttered desktop
Martindale has let project folders and icons pile up on his desktop, which he calls chaotic. By his own account the effect is mainly aesthetic. Organizing folders can make files easier to find, but it does not improve performance, so treat it as an optional workflow improvement rather than a fix for a slow PC.
Which habit to fix first
Of the eight, three deserve attention before the rest, because they affect whether you can recover from a failure or resolve a problem you already have:
- Make and verify a backup before any Windows reinstall, and keep a copy off the PC.
- Keep Windows and other software current, and check the vendor’s page before any BIOS update.
- Write down symptoms you cannot explain and work through them, rather than living with them.
Restart schedules, inbox counts, cable choice, DPI, and desktop tidiness are matters of workflow and taste. Change them when they cost you time or accuracy, not because a confession list says so.
