Illinois is included in the distribution area for frozen berry products added to a recall expansion posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 2, 2026. Check the brand, product, package size, UPC, lot code and date on the bags below: only specified lots are identified, and distribution to select stores does not mean every store in Illinois carried them.
Which recalled frozen berries should Illinois shoppers check?
Compare every identifier on your package with the FDA-listed products. The October 2 notice added these Great Value and Trader Joe’s products:
| Brand and product | Size and UPC | Recalled lot(s) | Date mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend | 10 oz; UPC 7874211226 | 6 031 01 | Best if used by January 31, 2028 |
| Great Value Organic Triple Berry Blend | 10 oz; UPC 7874211226 | 6 041 01 | Best if used by February 10, 2028 |
| Great Value Organic Blueberries | 10 oz; UPC 7874211213 | 6 019 01 | Best if used by January 19, 2028 |
| Great Value Organic Blueberries | 10 oz; UPC 7874211213 | 6 040 01 | Best if used by February 9, 2028 |
| Great Value Organic Blueberries | 10 oz; UPC 7874211213 | 6 163 01 | Best if used by June 12, 2028 |
| Trader Joe’s Organic Mixed Berry Blend | 12 oz; UPC 00977654 | 6 051 01 | Best before February 20, 2028 |
These are the additional lots in the October 2 expansion, not a blanket recall of every frozen berry product or every package of the named products. The Great Value products were shipped to select Walmart stores in 30 states and Puerto Rico; the Trader Joe’s product was shipped to select stores in 26 states and Washington, D.C. Illinois is on both distribution lists. See the FDA recall notice for the listed products and distribution details.
How to check a bag in your freezer
- Find the product name and brand on the front of the package.
- Check the package size and UPC, usually printed near the barcode.
- Find the printed lot code and date mark on the package. Compare both with the matching row above; the lot and date must correspond to the product.
- If all identifiers match, do not eat the berries. Discard the product or return it to Walmart or Trader Joe’s, as applicable, for a full refund.
A date extending into 2028 does not make a matching package safe: the listed lots have those date marks and are still recalled. Do not try to make a recalled product safe by rinsing, cooking or freezing it; FDA’s instruction is not to consume it.

Why is Illinois included, and were there cases there?
Illinois is a product-distribution state for the newly added lots, not a state listed among cases in the FDA’s final outbreak summary. That summary reported 17 illnesses, six hospitalizations and zero deaths, with cases in Florida and Georgia and the last illness onset on August 6, 2026. The outbreak investigation was marked complete on September 21. Product distribution and illness locations are different facts: the Illinois listing means select stores received products, not that an illness was reported in Illinois.
What caused the recall expansion?
The FDA’s October 2, 2026 notice describes the added-lot action as a precautionary measure following traceback information associated with frozen blueberries in the initial July 3 recall. CDC’s final investigation conclusion was: “Epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback data showed that frozen organic blueberries supplied by Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A. were contaminated with E. coli O145 and made people sick.” The strain is identified as E. coli O145:H28, also called E. coli O145. Read the CDC final investigation summary and the FDA outbreak update for the agencies’ findings and final status.

The evidence was cumulative, rather than a positive result from every sample. CDC reported that 11 of 13 interviewed people (85%) said they ate frozen blueberries; by comparison, 24% of respondents in the FoodNet Population Survey reported eating frozen berries. That comparison supported the epidemiologic investigation, but it is not the share of all outbreak cases and does not by itself establish the source. FDA said its collected samples tested negative; a product sample collected and tested earlier by Publix tested positive for the same E. coli strain associated with the outbreak.
What about the earlier GreenWise recalls?
The October expansion is separate from earlier GreenWise actions. FDA and CDC describe an earlier recall of GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries, 10 oz, lot 60401, best by February 9, 2028. Publix later recalled all lots of GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries in multiple sizes. CDC lists those GreenWise products’ distribution in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia—not Illinois. Do not confuse those earlier products with the Great Value and Trader Joe’s lots distributed to select Illinois stores. The CDC investigation page summarizes the earlier GreenWise actions.

What symptoms should prompt a call to a health care provider?
CDC says Shiga toxin-producing E. coli illness commonly causes severe stomach cramps, diarrhea that is often bloody, and vomiting. Symptoms usually begin three to four days after swallowing the bacteria. Most people recover without treatment after five to seven days, but some develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a serious kidney problem that may require hospitalization.
If someone ate a recalled frozen berry product and develops symptoms resembling E. coli infection, contact a health care provider immediately. CDC provides further consumer guidance in its final investigation summary.
