The IKEA VALEVÅG is a 9½-inch, roll-packed pocket-spring mattress with three firmness choices in the US: medium-firm, firm and extra-firm. Whether it is worth buying depends on which version you try and what you need from a mattress: two reviewers who tested the medium-firm model described noticeably different feels, while reporting potential trade-offs in pressure relief, motion transfer and edge support.
What the IKEA VALEVÅG is
VALEVÅG is IKEA’s pocket-spring mattress family. The US listing describes five comfort zones, pocket springs, foam and textile filling, and firmer edges. IKEA says the zones relieve pressure at the hips and shoulders and describes the mattress as suitable for all sleepers, especially side sleepers; those are the retailer’s claims, not a universal independent finding. The mattress is roll-packed for transport.

The US Queen measures 79½ × 59⅞ inches and is 9½ inches thick. Materials listed by IKEA include recycled polyester ticking, viscose/polyester filling, polyurethane foam, polypropylene and steel springs. IKEA says the mattress was tested against EN 1957 durability requirements and US flammability requirements 16 CFR 1633/1632; the underlying test reports were not independently examined. See IKEA’s US product listing.
How firm is VALEVÅG?
IKEA offers medium-firm, firm and extra-firm versions in the US. Firmness labels are only a starting point: the independent reviews in this article tested the medium-firm model, and the reviewers did not agree on how it felt.

| US option | What the available evidence says |
|---|---|
| Medium-firm | NapLab rated its tested sample 7/10 on its subjective firmness scale and called it slightly firm. Ideal Home reviewer Rachel Tompkins said her tested mattress felt closer to medium than medium-firm. These are individual assessments, not a standardized comparison. NapLab; Ideal Home. |
| Firm | NapLab says it did not test this version. Its estimate that the firm option might feel closer to 8/10 is based on prior experience with IKEA mattresses, not a direct test of the VALEVÅG firm model. NapLab. |
| Extra-firm | No independent test result for this version is established by the available reviews. NapLab; Ideal Home. |
Because comfort depends on the sleeper and setup, try the exact firmness you intend to buy if possible. Do not assume the firmness label predicts a precise feel for your body.
What reviewers found in the medium-firm version
Comfort and pressure relief
Tompkins tested the mattress on a slatted base for at least two weeks. She found it comfortable for her back and side sleeping and softer than she expected. NapLab’s tester described the same nominal firmness as firmer than anticipated and reported poor pressure relief in its test. These reports point to a possible trade-off: one reviewer liked the cushioning, while another was dissatisfied with pressure relief. Neither result establishes how the mattress will feel to every sleeper or how all firmness versions perform.

Changing position and partner movement
Tompkins found the mattress responsive when changing position, but noticed some motion transfer. If you share a bed, movement isolation may matter as much as how easily you can turn; the review does not establish how much motion a particular couple will feel.

Tompkins reported that the edge collapsed considerably when she sat on it. That observation may matter if you often sit on the mattress edge or sleep close to the side. IKEA describes the edges as firmer, but that product claim does not erase the reviewer’s experience in her tested setup.

Is the IKEA VALEVÅG worth it?
It may be worth considering if you want a pocket-spring mattress with several firmness choices and can try the version you plan to buy. The evidence is less reassuring if you need reliably strong pressure relief, very stable edges for sitting, or particularly low motion transfer: the independent medium-firm reviews raise questions about those areas rather than demonstrating a consistent result. No population-level clinical sleep outcome, long-term controlled durability result or directly comparable test across all three US firmnesses is established here.
IKEA’s product page displayed a 4-out-of-5 rating with more than 3,600 reviews when checked in 2026. That retailer-hosted aggregate changes over time and is customer feedback, not a controlled durability measure; the displayed review excerpts included both praise for comfort and complaints about softness or sinking. Fit, setup and care
Check the bed base
IKEA advises using VALEVÅG with a mattress base or a non-adjustable slatted base. Check the exact frame’s dimensions and mattress-thickness limits before buying; the US Queen is 9½ inches thick. IKEA’s general compatibility advice does not establish that every frame will fit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAllow time after unpacking
IKEA says the mattress can be used immediately after unpacking, but may take 3–4 days to regain its full shape. NapLab reported a strong initial odor that dissipated in three days in its own test; that is one reviewer’s observation, not a guarantee about every mattress. Read NapLab’s test details.

Clean without washing the cover
IKEA’s care instructions say not to wash the mattress cover. Use a vacuum or upholstery shampoo for the cover, and do not fold a spring mattress. A removable mattress protector or pad can be cleaned separately according to its own care label. Read IKEA’s mattress-care instructions.
Price, warranty and exchange terms
When reviewed, IKEA’s US listing showed the medium-firm Queen at $399, with Twin at $349, Full at $379 and King at $499. Prices and availability can change, so confirm the current price and stock on the product page. IKEA’s US listing showed a 10-year limited warranty and a 90-day exchange message. NapLab characterizes IKEA’s US mattress policy as exchange-only; read the current local terms carefully before buying, since exchange rules and warranty coverage are distinct and terms may vary by market. Quick Recap
How to decide before you buy
- Try the exact firmness variant you expect to purchase, rather than relying on the label or another version’s review.
- Consider your usual sleeping position and whether pressure relief is a priority; reviewer impressions of the medium-firm model diverged.
- If you share the bed, weigh the reported motion transfer alongside comfort.
- If you sit on the edge or sleep near it, assess edge stability in person if possible.
- Confirm the mattress dimensions, thickness allowance and base type for your frame.
- Read the exchange and warranty terms that apply in your location before placing the order.
