That makes it a tempting DIY base for a small homelab, not a purpose-built server rack. IKEA’s U.S. listing for the white LACK side table (article 304.499.08) showed $16.99 when checked; its tabletop is rated for a maximum load of 22 lb.
Why the LACK turns up in homelab builds
The appeal is a fortunate dimensional coincidence. The LACK measures 21 5/8 × 21 5/8 inches across, with a height of 17 3/4 inches. How-To Geek’s Sydney Butler explains that 19 inches refers to the front panel and mounting ears of rack equipment; the equipment body sits within the space between supports. That helps explain why the table can be adapted for some equipment layouts, but it does not establish that every 19-inch device will fit or that the table meets a rack standard.

Butler wrote: “As far as I know, IKEA didn’t set out to make a $17 disposable table that just happens to have the same dimensions used for 19-inch server racks like the one you see above.” The point is the table’s unexpected usefulness to DIY builders, not an IKEA server-rack design claim. IKEA describes the tabletop as particleboard with a honeycomb-structure paper filling made from 100% recycled paper, plus fiberboard, acrylic paint, and plastic edging. The product page also describes the table as lightweight and easy to assemble. Its stated maximum load is 22 lb on the tabletop. That figure applies to the listed table as furniture; it is not a safety rating for a modified rack, for equipment hung between the legs, or for a stack of components.

Before adapting one, check the full dimensions and weight of your actual equipment, where its weight will rest, and how you will keep the setup stable and accessible. Neither the dimensions nor the published tabletop limit establishes that a particular build is safe.
Community builds are examples, not tested plans
Community posts show owners using LACK furniture for homelab equipment, including an account describing reinforced posts and added support. Those are individual DIY examples, not controlled tests or proof that the same reinforcement—or any particular configuration—will support your gear safely. Is it a sensible choice for your setup?
The LACK is worth considering if you want an inexpensive furniture base and are prepared to assess your own layout rather than rely on a rack rating. A purpose-built rack or sturdier furniture may be a better choice when the load is substantial, the equipment must be securely mounted, or airflow and frequent access matter. Compare any option by usable width and depth, rated load, ventilation and access, stability under your actual equipment weight, modification effort, and total cost.
