Reports published on 2 and 3 October put the questioning at roughly eight to ten hours. The questioning is an investigative step, not an arrest or a finding of guilt.
What happened during the questioning?
Hindustan Times and Press Trust of India reporting put the session at around or nearly 10 hours. The Times of India reported that it lasted nearly eight hours. The reports therefore differ on the precise duration; “around eight to ten hours” reflects the published range.

Hindustan Times attributed this account to an unnamed senior Crime Branch officer: “We have questioned Professor Doolla for 10 hours and even recorded his statement.” The report does not name the officer.

What are the family’s allegations, and what is Doolla’s response?
Wakode’s parents have accused Doolla of harassing their son and discriminating against him on caste grounds. Doolla reportedly denied the allegations during questioning. These are opposing accounts reported by Hindustan Times, PTI via Careers360 and the Times of India; the reports do not establish that the allegations are true.

PTI/Careers360 reported that Powai police registered an FIR following a complaint by Wakode’s father, including provisions related to the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and abetment of suicide. The FIR and complaint were not independently available in the cited coverage.
What is known about the examination incident?
Reports say Wakode was found dead in his hostel room on 18 September 2026, after an incident during a mid-semester examination that day involving alleged phone use. Some coverage says the phone was allegedly used to access ChatGPT. That account remains a reported claim, not an independently verified finding in the reports cited here.

The timing of the exam incident and the death does not by itself establish a cause. The reports describe questions being investigated, not a conclusive determination about what led to Wakode’s death.

- Police inquiry: Hindustan Times and PTI reported that investigators had taken statements from about 40 people, including students, friends, family members and institute or hostel staff.
- Phone examination: Hindustan Times reported that police were having difficulty unlocking Wakode’s iPhone and had sent it for forensic examination.
- Institute inquiry: PTI/Careers360 reported that IIT Bombay’s board had constituted a 10-member inquiry committee. News reports also said Doolla had been removed from the Dean of Student Affairs role or sent on leave to facilitate an impartial inquiry, while remaining a professor; no institute notice was cited in the coverage.
What has—and has not—been established?
As of the reports published on 3 October 2026, the Crime Branch investigation and the institute’s inquiry were ongoing. The cited coverage reports questioning, a recorded statement and investigative steps; it does not report a final police or institutional finding. It also does not establish an arrest, guilt, or a causal link between the exam incident and Wakode’s death.
