In the final, fifth round of JoSAA 2026, IITs received 18,861 seat allotments against listed capacity of 18,826—a difference of 35. India Today’s account of the JEE Advanced 2026 Joint Implementation Committee (JIC) report says 16 of the 23 IITs were above their institute-level capacity figures. These are allotments, not confirmed enrollments.
What the 2026 figures show
India Today reports that the JIC report recorded 18,861 final-round IIT allotments against listed capacity of 18,826. The net difference is 35 allotments. The reported capacity includes 3,776 female-only supernumerary seats; 3,814 female candidates received allotments, equal to 20.22% of the total.

JoSAA was the joint allocation authority for the 2026–27 academic year, covering 138 institutes, including 23 IITs. Its official website posted a Round 5 allocation result notice. JoSAA provides the process and result information.
Which IITs were above listed capacity?

Dhanbad had the largest reported institute-level difference, at five. These raw totals are not a ranking of demand or institute quality: the institutions have different listed capacities. The available figures establish the largest overages, not the complete institute-by-institute breakdown.
Why allotments can exceed listed capacity
The comparison involves seat categories as well as headline totals. India Today reports that final-round allotments included five supernumerary DS seats, 15 seats for foreign nationals and 16 minimum-cut-off seats. It also says 37 female candidates received seats through the gender-neutral pool in addition to female-only allocations.

These categories help explain the structure behind the totals, but the reported information does not establish that they alone account for every institute’s difference. The detailed figures are reported by India Today as drawn from the JIC report; the official JEE Advanced report index lists the 2026 report and identifies IIT Roorkee as the organising institute.

No. An allotment is an assignment or offer in the counselling process. The 18,861 figure does not show how many candidates accepted their offers, reported to an IIT or enrolled. It should not be described as the number of students admitted or studying at IITs.
