Does IFTTT have to be running to work? Usually, no: most Applets run through IFTTT and the connected services, so the IFTTT app does not need to remain open on your phone. The main exception is an Applet that uses certain phone-local Android triggers. Those rely on IFTTT’s Android foreground service, which can run while the app screen is closed.
What happens when an IFTTT Applet runs?
An Applet connects at least one Trigger to an Action. The Trigger is an event or change in data that starts the automation; the Action is the task IFTTT then initiates. More complex Applets can also include Queries, filter code, delays, and multiple Actions. IFTTT describes their order as Trigger, Queries, filter code, delay, then Actions. IFTTT’s Applet overview explains this structure.

For most Applets, the relevant work happens between IFTTT and the services linked to the Applet. The phone app is not the component that must stay visibly open to make those service-to-service automations run.

Whether IFTTT learns about a trigger by polling or by an immediate notification depends on the service integration. Applet creators cannot switch a trigger from one method to the other in its settings. IFTTT’s Help Center describes polling as IFTTT checking the trigger service for new events, while a real-time trigger begins when the service notifies IFTTT. Its explanation of polling and real-time Applets was updated July 14, 2025.

| Trigger method | How IFTTT detects an event | Documented timing |
|---|---|---|
| Polling | IFTTT checks the trigger service for new events at intervals. | IFTTT’s 2025 documentation says checks occur every five minutes on Pro and Pro+, and every hour on Free. These are check intervals, not guarantees for end-to-end completion. |
| Real time | The trigger service notifies IFTTT when an event occurs. | IFTTT says real-time Applets normally run within a few seconds after notification. The action or service API can still affect completion time. |
A delay does not always mean an event was missed. If a polling check fails because a service API times out, IFTTT says a later successful check can find events since the previous successful check. That can postpone an Applet; it does not guarantee every third-party service retains every event. IFTTT’s polling troubleshooting guidance covers failed checks.
When the IFTTT app does need background activity on Android
Some Applets rely on events detected on the Android phone itself rather than only on a remote service. IFTTT says its Android foreground service is needed for reliable operation of many Applets using Android Device, Android Battery, Location, Group Location, Android SMS, and Android Phone Call triggers. A persistent IFTTT notification indicates that this foreground service is active. This means Android is allowing a system-managed service to work in the background; it does not mean you must keep the app screen open. See IFTTT’s explanation of its persistent Android notification, updated August 25, 2025.

Android version can also affect particular Actions. IFTTT says Android 14 and later restrict some activities started by background apps. It specifically identifies Android Device – Launch Google Maps Navigation and Android Device – Play music as Actions that may require a tap to continue. This is an action-specific constraint, not a general requirement for all Applets. IFTTT’s Android 14 guidance describes the limitation.

How to check why an Applet is delayed or not running
- Identify the trigger method. Open IFTTT’s activity feed for the Applet. “Successful trigger checks” indicates polling; “Listening for trigger notifications” indicates a real-time trigger. The trigger’s service integration determines which method applies.
- Allow for polling intervals. For polling triggers, IFTTT documents five-minute checks on Pro and Pro+ and hourly checks on Free. A check may be delayed by a service API timeout.
- Check the connected service and account. If authorization expired, credentials changed, or the connected account no longer has access to a referenced resource, reconnect the service or update the Applet’s inputs. IFTTT says affected Applets should resume after reconnection. See IFTTT’s troubleshooting guidance.
- On Android, check background activity for local triggers. If the Applet uses one of the Android triggers listed above, make sure Android is not restricting the IFTTT background service. If the Action is launching Google Maps Navigation or playing music from a background app, a tap may be required on Android 14 or later.
- Consider when the Applet was enabled. Applets act on trigger events after they are enabled; they do not access or process data created before activation. IFTTT’s Applet overview describes this limitation.
What to expect
- For most service-to-service Applets, the IFTTT phone app need not stay open.
- Some Android phone-local triggers depend on IFTTT’s foreground service running in the background.
- Polling intervals and real-time notifications are determined by the service integration, and timing can be affected by API delays.
- Working connections and permissions matter; reconnect a service if its authorization breaks.
- Events from before an Applet was enabled are not processed retroactively.
