What the hair-dryer test actually showed
In its teardown, iFixit opened an AirPods 5 earbud using a hair dryer on its lower heat setting and a clamp. The battery connects with prongs, so it can be disconnected and removed once the earbud is open. That is a meaningful design improvement, but it does not make the battery a routine user-replaceable part: the glued shell must first be opened, and iFixit describes careful heat control and patient prying. The hair dryer was a tool used during a teardown, not a validated repair procedure or a recommendation for owners to try. The reported result shows that heat and a clamp helped the teardown team gain access; it does not establish a safe temperature, reliable method, or likelihood of success for a consumer repair.
Can you replace an AirPods 5 battery?
Physically, the earbud battery is removable after disassembly. Practically, the glued enclosure makes access difficult, and iFixit said replacement batteries were not yet available when it published its teardown. The finding is therefore best described as improved access to a removable battery—not proof that owners can readily buy a part and complete a dependable repair.

Left and right batteries are different
Do not assume the two earbuds use interchangeable batteries. iFixit observed physical differences and reversed polarity between the left and right batteries. A replacement would need to match the correct side and orientation; the teardown does not establish that suitable replacement parts are currently obtainable.
Why the charging case is still the bigger problem
The case remains the major obstacle to repairing AirPods 5. iFixit reported that reaching its battery destroyed the case. Internal plastic welds impede disassembly, so the earbud battery improvement does not translate into a practical case-battery repair.

What the 2/10 repairability score means
iFixit awarded AirPods 5 a repairability score of 2/10 in the September 29, 2026 teardown, its highest score for AirPods at that point. The rating reflects repairability, not battery life, a repair-success rate, or a guarantee that a repair can be completed successfully. Removable pronged batteries help, but difficult earbud access, unavailable replacement batteries at publication, and a case that was destroyed during battery access keep the overall score low. iFixit explains its repairability scoring approach.
What to do if your AirPods battery is failing
For a failing battery, Apple lists service options for AirPods and says it will replace a battery for no extra charge if capacity falls below 80%. This is a service-policy threshold, not a battery-life test of AirPods 5. Check Apple’s AirPods service and repair page for the terms, eligibility, and pricing that apply to your location.
