Why the ESP32-C6 fits a Matter project
Matter devices need a way to communicate with the rest of a smart home. The ESP32-C6 combines Wi-Fi with an IEEE 802.15.4 radio, which supports Thread. Espressif documents Matter example projects for both routes, making the chip useful for exploring either kind of connection. Its documentation describes running a Wi-Fi or a Thread example—not a guarantee that one example uses both networking paths simultaneously. That flexibility matters when choosing what to build. A Wi-Fi-based project and a Thread-based project have different setup choices, so decide which route fits the device and network you want to explore before following an example. The chip’s radio support is a development capability, not a promise that every finished product will support every configuration.

An ESP32-C6 can be used to develop a Matter-over-Thread device, but Thread capability alone does not make it a Thread Border Router. A border router connects a Thread network to another network, such as Wi-Fi. Espressif’s border-router description combines an ESP32-H-series Thread component with a Wi-Fi-capable SoC; it does not describe a C6 endpoint as an automatic replacement for that home-network role. What you need to get started
- An ESP32-C6 development board, such as the ESP32-C6-DevKitC-1.
- A computer to install and run the development tools.
- A USB cable that supports data, not just charging. Match its connectors to your board and computer.
- Espressif’s ESP-IDF and ESP-Matter development tools.
Espressif documents installing ESP-IDF and ESP-Matter on a host computer, and also provides an official Docker image. The full ESP-Matter repository includes examples and host tools; using ESP-Matter as a component is a lighter route for adding it to an existing project. Follow the setup path and project instructions in the ESP32-C6 development guide.
Choosing an ESP32-C6 development board
The ESP32-C6-DevKitC-1 is Espressif’s entry-level development board built around an ESP32-C6-WROOM-1(U) module. Its documented functions include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, Zigbee and Thread. Espressif’s guide describes an 8 MB SPI flash configuration and module variants with either a PCB antenna or an external-antenna connector. These are board and module details to verify, not a ranking based on comparative testing. The DevKitC-1 v1.2 user guide is the reference for that board revision.

When comparing listings, check the exact board revision and module variant rather than assuming every board sold under a similar name is identical. Confirm the antenna type, flash configuration, USB connector and programming method, and which pins and peripherals are exposed. A development board is generally a more direct first step than a bare module when you want headers and USB programming support.

Espressif’s setup guide calls for a development board, computer and USB cable. It specifically warns that charge-only cables lack the data lines needed for programming. If your computer and board use matching connectors, a USB-A-to-USB-C data cable may be suitable; verify compatibility before buying.

From prototype to Matter-certified product
Running Matter code from an SDK on a prototype is not the same as having a certified consumer product. Espressif’s certification guide describes a process involving CSA membership and vendor identification, testing through an authorized test provider, and submission of the product. It also distinguishes provisional test Certification Declarations from official ones. Certification therefore applies to the product and its credentials, not merely to the development board or the fact that an example runs. Consult the ESP32-C6 Matter certification guide for ESP-Matter release v1.4.2 for the documented process.
