Yes—Choujin X is a strong next read if what you enjoy in Tokyo Ghoul is Sui Ishida’s supernatural horror and stories about people changed by extraordinary circumstances. Both manga are by Ishida, but Choujin X is a separate story with a different premise and protagonists; the official descriptions do not present it as a sequel or shared-universe continuation.
What connects Choujin X and Tokyo Ghoul?
The clearest connection is the creator. VIZ markets Choujin X as a work from the creator of Tokyo Ghoul, and both publisher descriptions involve supernatural threats and a protagonist transformed by an encounter with them. VIZ categorizes both under horror and thriller; Tokyo Ghoul is also categorized as supernatural. Those are publisher labels, not a definitive critical taxonomy.

Ishida’s series chronology also makes the relationship clear without suggesting continuity: Shueisha dates Tokyo Ghoul to 2011, Tokyo Ghoul:re to 2014, and Choujin X to 2021, which it lists as ongoing. Shueisha’s creator profile and interview provide that context.
How do their premises differ?
| Series | Publisher-described setup | Central transformation | Publisher-described tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Ghoul | Ghouls live among ordinary people and crave human flesh; college student Ken Kaneki is drawn into Ghoul society and its turf wars. | After a violent encounter, Kaneki becomes a half-human, half-Ghoul hybrid. | VIZ categories include horror, supernatural, and thriller. |
| Choujin X | Best friends Tokio and Azuma are attacked by a superhuman mutant called a choujin. | Tokio becomes a choujin himself. | VIZ describes it as “dark humor and quirky horror” and categorizes it as horror and thriller. |
So the appeal is not that the stories repeat the same setup. Tokyo Ghoul’s official description emphasizes Kaneki’s hybrid identity and the society he must navigate; Choujin X’s description centers on Tokio’s transformation and his friendship with Azuma.

Is Choujin X worth reading after Tokyo Ghoul?
Try it if you want another Ishida manga built around supernatural transformation and horror, and you’re open to a different tone. VIZ’s description explicitly signals dark humor and quirky horror for Choujin X, so don’t approach it expecting the publisher to frame it as simply another Tokyo Ghoul story.
There is no publisher-established basis for calling Choujin X a sequel, prequel, or shared-universe continuation. Read it as its own series, with the creator connection as the reason to give it a look—not as a promise that Kaneki’s story carries over.
