The calculation
The math uses two closing prices, both split-adjusted, and assumes the full $1,000 buys shares at the starting close.

October 7, 2026 is the most recent settled close available for this calculation. On October 8, a quote of $320.67 appeared during the trading session, but that was an intraday observation, not a closing price, so it is not used here. Any later check will produce a different ending value, because the stock moves every trading day and the endpoint determines the result.

Why the prices must be split-adjusted
Sherwin-Williams’ 2021 annual report states that all prior-year share and per-share information was retroactively adjusted to reflect the three-for-one stock split effective March 31, 2021. A split changes the number of shares and the price per share, but it does not change the value of a holding. Comparing an unadjusted 2011 price with a post-split 2026 price would make the 2011 figure look roughly three times larger than it was on a comparable basis, and the apparent gain would shrink to a fraction of its true size. Always use split-adjusted history for both endpoints.
Dividends and total return
What the company offers shareholders
Sherwin-Williams’ 2025 annual report says a dividend reinvestment program is available to common shareholders. Dividends paid during the holding period would add to the result, and reinvesting them would compound it. The sources used here did not establish a verified, matched dividend-adjusted price pair for October 7, 2011 and October 7, 2026, so this article does not state a dividend-reinvested ending value.

Using adjusted close for total return
Yahoo Finance describes its adjusted close as incorporating stock splits and dividend and/or capital-gain distributions. For total-return work, use the adjusted close column for both dates, then compare the ratio of the two values. Confirm the figures against your own dividend records before relying on the result.

Start and end dates
A fifteen-year result is highly sensitive to the chosen dates. Starting a few weeks earlier or later, or ending on a different day, can change the outcome substantially. The October 7 anchors are used because they are the closest trading-day pair to the fifteen-year window with settled closes.
How to recalculate for your own dates
- Download historical daily data for SHW from a source that labels prices as split-adjusted.
- Find the close on your start date, or the nearest earlier trading day if your date falls on a weekend or holiday.
- Find the close on your end date, using a settled close rather than an intraday quote.
- Divide your investment amount by the starting close to get the number of shares.
- Multiply the share count by the ending close to get the price-only value.
- For total return, repeat the steps using the adjusted close column for both dates and compare the ratio.

Comparing against a benchmark
If you compare this result with an index or another stock, use the same convention on both sides. Compare price return with price return, or dividend-reinvested total return with total return. Mixing the two overstates or understates the gap.
