Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden says Sony’s reported plan to stop making PlayStation discs starting in 2028 could alienate collectors and damage the brand. His criticism is not a measured prediction: Layden says he does not know Sony’s financial reasoning, and the reported timeline and its scope have not been established in a Sony announcement cited here.
What Layden said about PlayStation discs
Layden made the comments after being asked about Sony’s all-digital future on The Expansion Pass podcast, according to VGC. He left Sony in 2019, when he was chairman of its worldwide studios group.

He acknowledged the appeal of downloads, joking that they are easier than getting up and crossing the living room to insert a disc. But he argued that physical buyers include committed collectors who may buy multiple copies, keep one sealed and play another. Collecting and displaying games, he said, is part of gaming culture.

Layden put the ownership concern this way: “If you can’t sell a thing, that means you don’t own a thing. And if you don’t own it, then what are you buying? If you’re buying access, that doesn’t quite sound as sexy, to be honest.”

What is known about the reported 2028 plan?
VGC reports that Sony is to stop making discs starting in 2028. The available reporting cited here does not include a primary Sony announcement confirming the plan’s exact scope, timing or exceptions. That is not evidence that physical games are already unavailable, nor does it establish that every current PlayStation console will be affected.
Layden’s earlier comments about a possible move away from discs described a business calculation involving disc sales, manufacturing costs, broadband access and revenue share. In an account of his remarks, TechRadar reported that Layden had long been asked when PlayStation would drop the disc drive. His historical threshold was whether broadband could support downloads for most customers worldwide. These were Layden’s reflections, not a disclosed explanation from Sony.

Why physical games still matter to some players
Physical games offer a tangible copy that can be displayed or collected, which is central to Layden’s argument about gaming culture. They can also be resold or transferred in ways that a digital purchase may not allow. Digital downloads, by contrast, avoid handling a disc and are convenient to acquire and play.

MIT Press’s The End of Ownership reproduces PlayStation license language saying software is licensed, not sold, and that users receive rights to use it without acquiring ownership of the software. The book also discusses limits on transferring licensed digital content. Those terms should not be treated as identical for every title, transaction or territory, or as a universal legal answer.

Whether a digital game can be sold or transferred depends on the applicable terms and rules; the sources cited here do not establish a universal answer. Likewise, having a disc does not establish that every game will work fully offline. Players weighing a disc-based setup should check the terms and requirements for the particular game and console.
Layden’s 80/20 example is not sales data
Layden speculated that “maybe 80% of the people download and 20% don’t, or whatever that breakdown is going to be,” according to VGC. His phrasing makes clear that this is a rough hypothetical, not a verified PlayStation sales statistic. The reporting cited here does not establish a current physical-versus-digital sales split.

In earlier remarks covered by TechRadar, Layden also used an illustrative calculation in which an 80% opportunity represented 95% of revenue and the remaining 20% represented 5%. That, too, was an example to explain a possible commercial threshold—not verified Sony sales figures.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy Layden calls it a brand risk
Layden said the change could carry “a whole lot of brand hit and reputation bite,” adding that he had “no visibility on the financials around it.” He called it “a significant brand hit” and said he hoped the decision made sense to Sony. The brand-impact judgment is his assessment; no quantified impact is established by the cited reporting.

His point is that convenience and commercial calculations may not capture what physical games mean to collectors and other customers. But without Sony’s stated rationale, the exact production plan, or verified sales figures, the evidence does not show how Sony weighed those customers against the costs and revenue associated with discs.
