If My Docker Server Died Tonight, These Are the 4 Containers I’d Rebuild First

I can’t honestly name four containers without knowing which services I run: the recovery order depends on the stack, the data it holds, and what else relies on it. For your own list, rank the services you actually use—not a generic “top four”—and assume the failed host is gone but your deployment files and a separate backup are available.

The key distinction is that rebuilding a container and recovering its data are separate jobs. Docker’s guidance is to retain the options used to create a container, or a Compose file, so you can recreate its configuration; data in volumes and bind mounts needs its own backup plan. Docker’s backup and restore guidance is specifically for Docker Desktop, so Linux Docker Engine users should not copy its Desktop VM-file paths as a general server procedure.

Why I won’t invent a universal list of four

There is no evidence-backed order that fits every Docker server, and no information here establishes which four containers I run. A home server’s identity service, DNS, automation platform, and user-facing apps can have very different outage costs and dependencies. The honest ranking is personal: it should reflect the services on the machine and the consequences of losing each one.

Use these questions to set your order. They are a practical framework inferred from Docker’s and Home Assistant’s recovery guidance, not a published scoring system:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Outage impact: What stops working for you or other users if this service is unavailable?
  • Data at risk: What irreplaceable state does it hold, and how much would be lost if its persistent data were missing?
  • Dependencies: Does another service need this one to start or function? A dependency may need recovery before the app you notice first.
  • Backup confidence: Is a recent, usable copy stored somewhere you can reach if the server itself is gone?
  • Restore effort: How long—and how much guesswork—would it take to recreate the service and verify it?

Order the four by the actual combination of these factors. If a service is essential to reaching or authenticating to others, that dependency can outweigh which app feels most visible. If a service is easy to rebuild but its data is not, prioritize protecting the data even if the container itself is not first to start.

For each container, record the recovery recipe

Once you have identified your real four, make a compact recovery note for each one. The goal is to remove guesswork when the original host is unavailable.

  • Purpose and priority: What does the service do, and why does it belong at this place in your personal restore order?
  • Run configuration: Keep its Compose file or equivalent settings, including the image, ports, environment, networks, restart behavior, and mount locations it needs. Docker specifically recommends preserving the creation options or a Compose file to recreate configuration after reinstallation.
  • Persistent state: Identify every named volume and bind-mounted directory that contains data you need. Record where the data is backed up and how to restore it; do not assume that saving an image or container definition includes it.
  • Dependencies and checks: Note what must be available first, then write down a simple check that confirms the service works after restoration—for example, a login, a page loading, or a device responding.

Docker explains that committed images do not include changes in attached volumes and that named-volume data must be backed up separately. Its documentation also notes that where volumes or bind mounts hold container data, backing up the container may not be necessary if you retain the configuration needed to recreate it. That is why the deployment recipe and the data backup belong in separate parts of the recovery plan.

Recover data as well as containers

A container can start successfully and still be an empty shell if its persistent data is absent. Treat a volume or bind mount as application state that needs a known backup and restore path, not as something the container image will bring back automatically.

Home Assistant is one concrete example of how a service documents this distinction. Its Linux Container installation guide mounts a persistent configuration path at /config. The guide requires Docker Engine 23.0.0 or later for that installation and says Docker Desktop will not work for it. Those are Home Assistant-specific requirements, not universal requirements for Docker containers. Home Assistant’s Linux installation guide also notes that Compose can be preferable as Docker commands become more complex and can support restart behavior after failures or system restarts.

Keep a backup somewhere the failed server cannot take down

A backup stored only on the Docker host is a weak recovery plan for a host failure: the copy may be unavailable along with the machine. Home Assistant recommends storing a backup on another system and ideally off-site; it warns that a device-local-only copy may be difficult to access if that device crashes. A separate external drive can provide another copy, but the cited guidance does not prescribe a capacity, model, or brand.

For Home Assistant specifically, the official backup guide says backups are encrypted compressed archives, stored locally by default. A full backup includes configuration, share, manually installed or created apps, SSL, and media. The guide supports scheduled backups and recommends a daily schedule. These details apply to Home Assistant backups, not every container’s backup format or cadence. Home Assistant’s backup guide explains its backup options.

Encryption also creates a recovery dependency: keep the Home Assistant backup emergency kit, including the recovery key, somewhere safe and separate from the server. Home Assistant says the key is required to restore an encrypted backup. A backup you cannot decrypt is not a usable recovery copy.

Make the first rebuild less uncertain

  1. Save the deployment definition off-host. Keep Compose files or the equivalent container creation settings somewhere available if the Docker machine is lost.
  2. Inventory persistent storage. For every priority service, list its named volumes and bind mounts, then confirm that the data—not just the container image—is included in a backup.
  3. Copy backups to separate storage. Keep at least one copy on another system, and consider an off-site copy for protection from a broader loss.
  4. Store recovery material separately. If a backup is encrypted, preserve the key or emergency kit apart from the host and the backup copy.
  5. Write the restore sequence and a success check. Record dependencies, the commands or Compose workflow you will use, and how you will verify the restored service.

A plan is only as useful as the path it describes. Keep the four names and their restore notes tied to your actual stack, and make sure the backup location and any required keys remain reachable when the server does not.
