If AI-driven demand keeps consumer DRAM and SSD supplies tight, manufacturers should make battery replacement inexpensive, accessible and supported for years. A new battery cannot add memory chips, but it can stop a worn battery from forcing the purchase of an otherwise usable phone or laptop while replacement prices are rising.
Why a memory shortage changes the battery-repair question
Memory components are becoming more expensive because suppliers are redirecting capacity toward AI data-center products. IDC described the trade-off this way: “This is a zero-sum game: every wafer allocated to an HBM stack for an Nvidia GPU is a wafer denied to the LPDDR5X module of a mid-range smartphone or the SSD of a consumer laptop.”

Gartner projected a 130% increase in combined DRAM and SSD prices by the end of 2026. In that projection, average PC prices rise 17% and smartphone prices 13% compared with 2025, while 2026 PC shipments fall 10.4% and smartphone shipments fall 8.4%. TrendForce separately forecast notebook shipments down 14.8% quarter over quarter in the first quarter of 2026 and 9.4% year over year for the full year, while reporting price increases for memory, batteries, PCBs and power-management components.

IDC said higher component costs are likely to lengthen replacement cycles. Gartner analyst Ranjit Atwal called it “the steepest contraction in device shipments witnessed in over a decade” and said buyers would hold devices longer.

That makes battery life a practical economic issue. A phone may still have adequate performance, storage and software support, yet an aging battery can cause shutdowns, poor runtime or performance management that makes the device feel unusable. Replacing that battery avoids buying a new device during a period when memory inflation is pushing prices higher.
What companies should provide
Design for non-destructive access
Devices should let a trained owner or ordinary repair shop reach the battery without destructive adhesive work, hidden proprietary barriers or parts that are unnecessarily paired to the motherboard. A removable rear cover is one approach; carefully designed pull-tabs, standard fasteners and replaceable adhesive are other options. The goal is a repair that does not turn a routine battery job into a display or frame replacement.

Publish the information a repair actually needs
- List the battery’s US parts price separately from labor.
- Provide service manuals, safety warnings, tool requirements and connector diagrams.
- State a realistic repair time, including adhesive removal, calibration and testing.
- Explain whether opening the device affects water or dust resistance.
- Publish battery health, charging and calibration procedures for owners and independent shops.
Offer two transparent purchasing paths
Owners should be able to buy a low-cost part-only option if they have the skills and tools, or choose an installed service with the labor charge, turnaround time and warranty shown before payment. Warranty coverage should state what happens if the replacement battery is defective, swollen or unable to meet its rated capacity.
Keep software and parts available together
A replacement is useful only while the device remains secure and functional. Manufacturers should provide firmware, security updates and battery calibration support for the battery’s expected service life, and track inventory for several years instead of discontinuing batteries soon after a model leaves stores.

Evidence that inexpensive replacement can work
Modular example: Fairphone
Fairphone’s current spare-parts page lists a Fairphone 5 battery at €39.95. The company also publishes an average smartphone battery-repair benchmark of €79.32; that is a Fairphone-published benchmark, not a universal market price. Its US repair guidance describes battery replacement as a roughly 5–10 minute user task and tells users, “Replace your battery … 5 – 10 minutes.” These figures demonstrate that a manufacturer can make the part and the procedure understandable, but they do not establish what every phone owner will pay in the United States.
Mainstream service example: Apple
Apple’s US support information provides battery-service estimates and says service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining warranty term, whichever is longer. Apple also says self-service repair is available only in certain countries or regions and only for specific iPhone models introduced in 2021 or later. Availability, price, tools and the effect on water resistance therefore depend on the model, country and provider.

Should you replace a battery or buy a new device?
Use a battery replacement when the device still meets your performance, storage, camera, connectivity and software-security needs. The memory shortage affects the price and availability of a replacement device; it does not add RAM or storage to your current one. If the phone is otherwise adequate, a battery is usually the smaller intervention.
Replace the battery when these conditions are true
- Runtime has declined substantially, the phone shuts down unexpectedly or it reports a worn battery.
- The screen, charging port, cameras and other major components work normally.
- Your model continues to receive the security and operating-system support you need.
- The quoted repair cost, downtime and warranty are clearly lower than replacing the whole device.
- The battery is not swollen or physically damaged. A swollen battery should be handled by a qualified service provider, not punctured or forced out.
Choose a new device when these conditions dominate
- The device is outside security support or cannot run software you require.
- It has additional costly failures, such as a damaged display, board or charging system.
- It lacks the cellular bands, accessibility features or connectivity standards you now need.
- A replacement battery is unavailable, unverified or priced so close to a supported replacement device that the repair has little economic advantage.
Can a new battery provide two more years?
It can, but no battery replacement guarantees two additional years. The realistic answer depends on the model’s remaining software-support period, the condition of its storage and ports, and whether replacement batteries remain available. Evaluate those factors before ordering rather than treating battery capacity alone as a lifespan forecast.

Calculate the real lifetime cost
Compare more than the sticker price. Add the battery, labor or tools, shipping, downtime, tax, warranty coverage and any calibration requirement. Then weigh the environmental cost of discarding a working display, camera, frame and circuit board. A cheap part with no safety documentation or warranty may be a false economy; a moderately priced installed repair can be better value if it is reliable and preserves support.
Manufacturers can make this calculation easier by publishing a parts price, installed price, repair time, warranty term and supported-model list on one page. They should also state how long batteries will remain orderable and whether independent shops can buy the same parts and manuals.
What a durable policy would look like
- Design the battery path for non-destructive access and ordinary repair tools.
- Publish manuals, parts prices, safety instructions and realistic time estimates at launch.
- Sell both parts and installed service, with warranty terms shown before checkout.
- Support battery calibration, firmware and security updates for the expected service life.
- Maintain battery inventory for several years and report when a replacement is no longer available.
- Measure success by avoided full-device purchases and usable years added, not only by initial repair revenue.
Memory shortages cannot be solved by changing a battery. They can, however, make avoidable replacement especially expensive. Affordable, supported battery repair is a concrete way for technology companies to help owners keep functioning devices in service while DRAM and SSD supply remains constrained.
