How the two Cologne editions differ

How teams reach the playoffs
The 2026 Major: three stages filter 32 teams
The Major began with Stage 1, a 16-team field playing June 2–5, with the top eight advancing. Stage 2 ran June 6–9 with 16 teams, again sending eight onward. Stage 3, June 11–15, brought together 16 teams; its top eight earned playoff places. Each stage therefore narrowed the field before the eight-team single-elimination bracket, which ran June 18–21. ESL FACEIT Group’s event announcement specifies the stage schedule and match formats.

What match lengths mean for the viewing experience
Best-of-one matches can produce quicker, more volatile results: one map decides the match. A best-of-three gives teams more room to adapt across maps, while a best-of-five final extends the deciding contest further. At the 2026 Major, early stages mixed best-of-one matches with best-of-three advancement and elimination matches, then Stage 3 switched entirely to best-of-three. The announced 2027 regular event uses best-of-three throughout both preliminary stages.
The final format is alike in both editions: best-of-five. The difference is the surrounding playoff slate. The 2026 Major lists quarterfinals and semifinals as best-of-three. The 2027 event also plans a best-of-three third-place match, in addition to best-of-three quarterfinals and semifinals.

Which stages can fans attend?
2026 Major: live access expanded before playoffs
For the 2026 Major, Stage 3 was opened to live attendees for the first time in IEM Cologne history, before playoffs moved to LANXESS Arena. ESL FACEIT Group’s later recap reported 67,000 fans from more than 75 countries across nine tournament days. That is the organizer’s post-event figure; it differs from the advance estimate in the May announcement, which expected more than 50,000 attendees from over 70 countries. The recap also reported more than 100 million hours watched and 2.75 million peak viewers; those are organizer-reported figures, not independently audited measurements. 2027 regular event: four announced arena playoff days
For 2027, ESL has announced four days of playoff matches in front of a crowd at LANXESS Arena, with a central 360-degree stage. The planned playoff dates are August 12–15. The eight-team single-elimination bracket includes the quarterfinals and semifinals, followed by a third-place match and the grand final. That means more scheduled playoff days than the familiar Friday-to-Sunday pattern described in ESL’s event context, although operational details for a future event can change.

The 2026 Major offered more rounds of progression for its larger 32-team field, including live attendance at Stage 3 as well as the LANXESS Arena playoffs. The announced 2027 regular event has a more compact 24-team path, uses best-of-three matches across its preliminary groups, and plans four arena playoff days around a 360-degree stage. Which edition sounds better depends on what you value: following a longer qualification journey, or having more scheduled arena playoff days.
