Verdict: IDrive is best understood as a multi-device cloud backup service, not a simple file-sync drive. It may suit a household or small office that wants to back up several kinds of devices and keep recovery history. Before subscribing, check the current plan limits and renewal terms, and decide whether you need its separately activated Cloud Drive sync feature.
What IDrive backs up
IDrive’s official materials describe backup for Windows and Mac computers, Linux machines, iPhones, iPads, Android devices, external drives and supported NAS devices. Which devices and allowances are included depends on the plan. Its features page and pricing page describe the supported options and plan categories.

The pricing page positions Personal for individuals and home users, Team for small teams, and Business for medium-to-large organizations. That makes the first fit question practical: how many computers, users and data sources do you need to protect, and does the specific plan include them?

Is IDrive cloud backup or cloud storage?
IDrive is primarily a backup service. Backup keeps copies of selected data for recovery; sync keeps selected files aligned across devices. IDrive lists Cloud Drive as a separate real-time sync feature that users must activate. The company cautions that sync is not backup: deletion or encryption can propagate to synced devices. Backup can provide additional recovery options, but it does not remove every ransomware, account or device risk. See IDrive’s cloud-backup explainer.

Plans and pricing: what to verify
IDrive’s signup page displayed Personal plans with 2 TB and 5 TB, alongside promotional monthly-equivalent amounts of $3.75 and $4.99. Those were limited first-year offers on the page accessed in October 2026, not guaranteed prices or renewal quotes; the page also says accounts renew automatically. Offers may vary by region and can change. Check the actual checkout terms for your location at IDrive’s signup page.
The official pricing page lists Mini, Personal, Team and Business plans with different storage, device and administration allowances. It states prices in US dollars and describes eligible signup discounts as limited-time offers. The same page lists overage rates of $0.25 per GB per month for Personal and $0.50 per GB per month for Team and Business. Verify the current terms for the plan you select before relying on those rates.

- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
- Confirm storage capacity and how it applies across your devices.
- Check included computers, users and any device or account limits.
- Compare the promotional charge with the renewal price and billing interval.
- Review taxes, overage handling and add-on costs at checkout.
- Check whether the support and recovery options you need are included.
IDrive lists Microsoft 365, Google Workspace and other cloud-application backup as add-ons; availability and seat pricing vary by product. Don’t assume those services are included in a standard storage allowance. A useful value comparison considers total data across devices, retention and restore needs, renewal cost, support and add-ons—not just the first-year price.

For a large initial backup or restore, IDrive describes IDrive Express, which uses a shipped physical drive to transfer data. Included requests and fees for additional requests depend on the plan. IDrive’s pricing page says shipment is intended to complete within a week; that is not a guaranteed arrival or restore time. Review the current plan terms before counting on this option.
Encryption and the private-key tradeoff
IDrive states that it encrypts files with 256-bit AES in transit and at rest. It also offers an optional private encryption key that it says is not stored on its servers. IDrive says this prevents the company from reading data encrypted with that key, but it also means the customer must preserve the key: losing it can prevent recovery. These are vendor statements, not an independent security audit. Read IDrive’s explanation and feature details, then decide whether you can securely retain the key.

- High capacity in a small enclosure – The small, lightweight design offers up to 6TB* capacity, making WD Elements portable hard drives the ideal companion for consumers on the go.
- Plug-and-play expandability
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Who should consider another approach?
- You need only effortless file syncing: IDrive’s central offering is backup, and Cloud Drive requires separate activation. Confirm its sync behavior meets your needs before choosing it for that purpose.
- You want a fixed, predictable renewal cost: the displayed promotional amounts are not a renewal guarantee, so compare the checkout renewal quote and overage terms with your budget.
- You cannot safely retain a private key: if you enable IDrive’s optional private key and lose it, recovery may be impossible. Consider whether that risk is acceptable for the data you plan to protect.
- You need a specific platform, NAS model or cloud-app integration: verify support and plan eligibility directly in IDrive’s current materials rather than assuming every plan includes every feature.
Before subscribing
- List every computer, phone, external drive, NAS and cloud application you intend to protect.
- Match that list to a plan’s current device, user, storage and add-on limits.
- At checkout, record the billing interval, first-term offer, renewal price, taxes and overage policy.
- Decide whether you need backup, Cloud Drive sync, or both; activate and configure them accordingly.
- If using a private encryption key, store it securely somewhere you can still access if your primary device fails.
- Choose an initial recovery approach. For very large transfers, check the current IDrive Express request allowance and fees.
An external drive can add a local backup layer alongside cloud backup; IDrive says external drives can be included in a backup set. Treat it as an additional copy, not a substitute for checking that your backups complete and that you can restore them.
