Core spread income strengthened, with net interest income (NII) up about 28.7% to roughly ₹4,227–4,228 crore and net interest margin (NIM) at 4.11%. Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) also improved sequentially, although net NPA edged up by one basis point.
Why did IDBI Bank’s profit fall 39%?
The bank reported standalone profit after tax (PAT) of ₹2,205.45 crore for Q2 FY27, compared with ₹3,627.36 crore in Q2 FY26, a 39.1% year-on-year decline. The comparison is distorted because the year-ago quarter contained a large one-off exceptional gain. That unusually high base makes the current reported PAT look weaker than the underlying banking performance.

Upstox, citing the bank’s own adjusted presentation, reported: “Excluding this one-off gain, YoY increase in Operating Profit and Net Profit is 59% and 14% for Q2 FY27, respectively.” The adjusted figures are not a replacement for reported PAT; they show why the headline percentage should be read alongside the exceptional item.

| Measure | Q2 FY27 | Comparison | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone PAT | ₹2,205.45 crore | Down 39.1% from ₹3,627.36 crore in Q2 FY26 | Headline result affected by the prior year’s exceptional gain |
| Net interest income | About ₹4,227–4,228 crore | Up 28.7% year on year | Stronger recurring interest income |
| Net interest margin | 4.11% | Up 40 basis points year on year and 50 basis points quarter on quarter | Improved spread earned on interest-bearing assets |
| Gross NPA | 2.12% | Down from 2.30% in the previous quarter | Sequential improvement in reported gross asset quality |
| Net NPA | 0.17% | Up from 0.16% in the previous quarter | Broadly stable, but not an improvement on this measure |
| Operating profit | ₹2,893 crore | Down 17.9% year on year | Non-interest and operating cost dynamics offset stronger NII |
| Provisions | ₹8.55 crore | Q2 FY27 figure reported by NDTV Profit | Small provision charge in the quarter |
Core income improved despite lower reported operating profit
NII and NIM were the clearest positives
NII measures the difference between interest earned on loans and investments and interest paid on deposits and other funding. IDBI Bank’s NII rose about 28.7% year on year to ₹4,227–4,228 crore, according to NDTV Profit’s report of the results. NIM reached 4.11%, gaining 40 basis points from a year earlier and 50 basis points from the preceding quarter. The simultaneous rise in NII and NIM points to stronger recurring spread economics rather than a profit increase driven only by an accounting item.

Why operating profit still declined
Operating profit was ₹2,893 crore, down 17.9% year on year, even with the NII increase. Operating profit includes the contribution from core interest income after operating expenses and other recurring operating revenue, so it can move differently from NII. The result means the quarter cannot be assessed from NII alone: stronger lending spreads were offset by other operating factors, leaving a lower reported operating-profit figure.
Provisions were reported at ₹8.55 crore. That number provides context for the quarter’s below-the-line result, but it does not erase the distinction between reported PAT, operating profit and the prior year’s exceptional gain.

Did asset quality improve?
Gross NPA moved in the right direction
Gross NPA declined to 2.12% from 2.30% in the previous quarter, an 18-basis-point sequential improvement, according to Moneycontrol’s results report. Gross NPA measures problem loans before provisions and recoveries are taken into account. The movement suggests a cleaner reported loan book compared with the immediately preceding quarter.

Net NPA was broadly stable
Net NPA increased slightly to 0.17% from 0.16%. Because the change is only one basis point, net asset quality was broadly stable, but it was not a sequential improvement. Reading both measures together gives a more accurate picture: gross stress declined, while residual stress after provisions edged higher.
What is behind the Fairfax stake sale?
The Union Cabinet approved Fairfax Financial Holdings’ acquisition of a combined 60.72% stake held by the Government and Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) for consideration of ₹52,878 crore, as reported by Moneycontrol. The transaction concerns the controlling Government and LIC holding, making ownership change a major piece of context for investors following the results.
After the transaction, the Government and LIC are expected to retain a combined 34% holding. The approved sale changes the bank’s ownership framework, but the available results reports do not provide a verified management guidance range for future quarterly performance. Investors therefore still need to track subsequent disclosures on completion, governance, capital strategy and operating execution rather than assuming that the approval alone determines earnings.

How to read the quarter as an investor
- Separate reported PAT from the base effect. The 39.1% decline compares Q2 FY27 with a Q2 FY26 that included a large exceptional gain.
- Check recurring spread income. NII growth of about 28.7% and a 4.11% NIM show stronger core interest economics.
- Do not ignore operating profit. The 17.9% year-on-year decline indicates that stronger NII did not translate into higher operating profit.
- Use both NPA measures. Gross NPA improved sequentially, while net NPA rose one basis point and remained broadly stable.
- Follow the ownership transition separately. Fairfax’s approved ₹52,878 crore purchase and the expected 34% combined residual Government and LIC holding are structural developments, not an earnings adjustment.
Bottom line on IDBI Bank Q2 FY27
IDBI Bank’s Q2 FY27 headline profit decline overstates the deterioration because the comparison period benefited from an exceptional gain. The underlying quarter had materially stronger NII and NIM, a lower gross NPA ratio and only a marginally higher net NPA. However, operating profit still fell year on year, so the result is best described as improving core spread income and broadly stable-to-better asset quality alongside a weaker reported profit comparison. Fairfax Financial Holdings’ approved purchase of the Government and LIC stake adds a significant ownership transition to the bank’s next phase.
