The headline price is currently a tie in the United States: Apple lists 2 TB of iCloud+ at $9.99 per month, while Google lists 2 TB in its Google AI Plus plan at $9.99 per month. Those plans are not equivalent bundles. iCloud+ is centered on Apple integration and privacy features; Google’s 2 TB tier includes Google services and plan-dependent AI benefits. Your device backup requirement, not the monthly price alone, should decide the purchase.

iCloud+ and Google One are storage subscriptions, but they solve different problems
Both subscriptions add cloud capacity and let a household share that capacity. The important difference is where the storage is used and what happens when you restore a device.

Google One expands the storage attached to a Google Account. That quota is shared by Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail. Google One is designed around Google’s apps and cross-platform account access rather than a complete image of an iPhone.
That distinction answers the most important comparison question: Google One is not a like-for-like replacement for iCloud Backup on an iPhone. Google One can synchronize selected iPhone data, but it cannot create a complete iPhone backup.
Quick decision: which service fits your situation?
| If this describes you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your primary phone, tablet, and computer are Apple devices | iCloud+ | Automatic device backups, Apple Photos and Drive integration, and straightforward Apple-device restoration. |
| You need a full iPhone backup, including settings, messages, and app data | iCloud+ | Google One does not back up the entire iPhone. |
| Your family uses a mix of Android, iPhone, Windows, and web browsers | Google One | Google storage and apps are organized around accounts that work across platforms. |
| Most of your data is in Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail | Google One | One shared quota covers those three services. |
| You want HomeKit Secure Video, Private Relay, or Hide My Email | iCloud+ | These are iCloud+ features, subject to device, tier, and regional requirements. |
| You want eligible Google AI features bundled with storage | Google One | AI benefits depend on the Google plan, country, and current product availability. |
| You want a shared household allowance without exposing personal files | Either | Both allow sharing with up to five additional people; sharing the quota does not automatically share private files. |
Current U.S. plans and prices
The following figures come from the official U.S. pages checked in 2026. Prices, names, benefits, taxes, and availability can differ by country and can change, especially for Google’s bundled AI plans.
Apple iCloud+ tiers
| Storage | U.S. monthly price | HomeKit Secure Video recording | Family sharing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 GB | $0.99 | One camera | Up to five additional people |
| 200 GB | $2.99 | Up to five cameras | Up to five additional people |
| 2 TB | $9.99 | Unlimited cameras | Up to five additional people |
| 6 TB | $29.99 | Unlimited cameras | Up to five additional people |
| 12 TB | $59.99 | Unlimited cameras | Up to five additional people |
Apple’s U.S. pricing page, published September 16, 2026, lists Private Relay, Hide My Email, a custom email domain, and Apple Invites with every iCloud+ tier. HomeKit Secure Video requires a compatible camera and supported home hub. Feature availability varies by country or region.
Google One tiers
| Plan shown on the U.S. page | Storage | U.S. monthly price | What to note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Google Account | 15 GB | $0 | Quota is shared by Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail. |
| Basic | 100 GB | $1.99 | Storage-focused entry tier. |
| Google AI Plus | 2 TB | $9.99 | Includes plan-dependent Google AI and other benefits. |
| Google AI Pro | 5 TB | $19.99 | Includes a larger allowance and plan-dependent AI and other benefits. |
Google’s plan overview also shows evolving 400 GB, 2 TB, 5 TB, 20 TB, and 30 TB options in certain groupings. Do not assume that every country or account sees the same names or tiers. Check the purchase page for the country, currency, and account you will use before subscribing.
At the commonly compared 2 TB level, the two U.S. prices are both $9.99 per month in the pages checked. The value is different: Apple provides Apple-specific privacy, backup, and smart-home features, while Google’s 2 TB plan packages storage with Google services and AI-related benefits.
How each service counts storage
Google One uses one Google Account pool
Google’s free account includes 15 GB. When you buy Google One, the paid amount increases the same overall allowance used by Google Photos, Google Drive, and Gmail.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Photos and videos uploaded to Google Photos consume the account quota.
- Files in Google Drive consume the same quota.
- Gmail messages and attachments also count toward the quota.
- Family members use their personal space first, then the family’s shared storage pool.
This arrangement is convenient when one person has a large photo library and another stores large Drive files. It can also make the source of a “full storage” warning less obvious, so review the storage breakdown before upgrading.

iCloud storage is tied to Apple services
iCloud storage supports Apple’s own services, including iCloud Backup, iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive. A large photo library, multiple device backups, or large Drive files can therefore compete for the same iCloud allowance.
Do not treat iCloud+ as a general replacement for every Google app. Its strongest integration is with Apple hardware and Apple services. If your household’s mail is Gmail and your shared documents are in Google Drive, adding iCloud+ will not move those files into the Google quota or make them available through Google’s apps.
The iPhone backup difference
What iCloud Backup does
When iCloud Backup is enabled, an iPhone can save information needed to restore the device, including messages, app data, and device settings. A replacement iPhone can use that backup during setup, subject to Apple’s restore requirements and the available iCloud space.
iCloud Backup is separate from syncing. iCloud Photos, Contacts, Notes, and other services may synchronize data independently, while the device backup records the configuration and data that are not simply re-downloaded from a service.
What Google One can synchronize on an iPhone
Google’s support documentation says Google One cannot back up an entire iPhone. The Google One app can synchronize photos and videos to Google Photos, and it can sync contacts and calendars to Google services. That is useful for accessing selected data from other devices, but it is not a complete device recovery file.
Google specifically identifies messages, app data, and device settings as examples of information saved by Apple iCloud Backup. If losing an iPhone and restoring it exactly as it was matters to you, keep iCloud Backup enabled even if you also use Google Photos or Google Drive.
Can Google One back up an iPhone?
Not completely. It can back up or synchronize selected categories such as photos, videos, contacts, and calendars, but it cannot back up the whole iPhone. You can use Google One as a cross-platform photo and file layer while retaining iCloud for full-device recovery.

Google One family sharing
Google says family members cannot access one another’s files merely because they share a Google One plan. A file, album, or message remains private unless its owner directly shares it. Each person uses personal storage first, and eligible plans then make unused capacity available through the shared pool.
Some Google One Lite plans exclude family sharing, and the exact benefits differ by plan. Confirm that the tier you are buying supports a family group before assuming the allowance can be shared.
iCloud+ family sharing
Apple lets an iCloud+ subscriber share storage and included features with up to five other family members. Family members use their own Apple Accounts; sharing storage does not require handing over account credentials. Personal photos, files, and backups remain associated with the individual accounts unless deliberately shared through Apple’s sharing tools.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Family sharing is an allowance arrangement, not six separate subscriptions. A member with a rapidly growing photo library can consume a large part of the shared capacity, so review usage when the household approaches its limit.
Privacy, encryption, and special features
iCloud+ privacy features
Every listed iCloud+ tier includes Private Relay, Hide My Email, a custom email domain, and Apple Invites according to Apple’s U.S. plan page. Private Relay is intended to limit the exposure of browsing details in supported contexts. Hide My Email creates relay addresses that can be disabled later. A custom email domain is useful for people who want an address at their own domain while using Apple’s mail service.
HomeKit Secure Video is the most distinctive smart-home benefit. The allowance is one camera on the 50 GB tier, up to five cameras on 200 GB, and unlimited cameras on 2 TB and larger tiers. A compatible camera and supported home hub are required, and availability depends on region.
Advanced Data Protection is optional
Do not read “iCloud+” as “everything in iCloud is end-to-end encrypted.” Advanced Data Protection is a separate, optional Apple setting. Apple says enabling it expands end-to-end encryption from 14 iCloud data categories to 23, including iCloud Backup, Photos, and Notes.
Apple also documents limits. iCloud Mail, Contacts, and Calendar are not end-to-end encrypted, and some collaboration features or “anyone with a link” sharing arrangements do not receive the same protection. Advanced Data Protection also requires recovery planning because Apple cannot decrypt protected data for you if you lose every approved recovery method.

Google One benefits depend on the plan
Google’s higher storage tiers package additional AI and other benefits, but those benefits are not identical across plans or countries and may change as Google updates the lineup. If storage is your only requirement, compare the price of the tier against a storage-focused option rather than assuming every bundled feature has value for you.
This comparison does not establish that one provider has universally stronger security. Both accounts should use a unique password, two-step verification, current recovery information, and careful sharing settings.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using Google One with an iPhone
An iPhone owner can reasonably use both services when each has a separate job. Keep iCloud Backup for complete device recovery, and use Google Photos for a library that is easy to view on Android, Windows, or the web. Google Drive can hold documents that need to be shared with people outside Apple’s ecosystem.
- Install Google Photos and sign in to the Google Account that will own the library.
- Allow photo access and enable backup in Google Photos. Check whether the app is still uploading after the initial setup.
- Install Google Drive if you need cross-platform files, and review which folders are shared.
- In iPhone Settings, open your Apple Account, choose iCloud, then iCloud Backup and turn on backup.
- Check available space in both accounts. A Google Photos upload does not reduce the space consumed by an iCloud photo library or iPhone backup.
This two-service arrangement costs more than choosing one provider, but it avoids treating selected-data synchronization as a full iPhone backup.
How to choose the right capacity
Start with the data you cannot replace
List the iPhones, iPads, family photo libraries, Drive folders, and Gmail accounts that the subscription must cover. For iCloud+, include the expected size of device backups and Apple Photos. For Google One, add Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail usage.
Allow room for growth
A plan that is nearly full on day one creates repeated cleanup work. Leave headroom for new photos, operating-system backups, and shared files. A family should size the plan for combined usage, not the smallest member’s current total.
Match the plan to the feature, not only the terabytes
- Choose iCloud+ 50 GB when one Apple user needs a modest backup and does not store a large photo library.
- Choose 200 GB when several Apple devices or a small family share photos and backups.
- Choose 2 TB when a household needs substantial Apple storage, unlimited HomeKit Secure Video cameras, or a comparable Google allowance.
- Consider 6 TB or 12 TB iCloud+ only when the household can document a need for that much Apple storage.
- Choose Google One Basic 100 GB for a modest Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail expansion.
- Choose Google’s 2 TB or 5 TB tiers when the storage is needed and the included AI or other benefits are useful to the account holders.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming the same terabyte amount means the same service
Two 2 TB plans can have very different practical value. One may solve iPhone recovery and HomeKit recording; the other may solve Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos capacity. Compare the data and devices first.

Turning off iCloud Backup after installing Google One
Installing Google One on an iPhone does not create a complete replacement backup. Verify that iCloud Backup has completed recently before removing any Apple storage plan.
Best Value
Confusing family storage with shared files
Family members share capacity, not automatic access to private files. If someone needs a document or album, share that item deliberately and check its permissions.
Ignoring regional plan differences
The prices in this guide are U.S. figures. Apple’s features vary by country or region, and Google’s plan names, AI benefits, storage tiers, and family eligibility can change. Read the local checkout page for the account’s billing country.
Assuming Advanced Data Protection covers every iCloud category
It is optional, expands protection to more categories, and still excludes iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and some collaboration scenarios. Enable it only after setting up the recovery contacts or recovery key Apple requires.
Bottom line for common buyer profiles
Apple-only household
iCloud+ is usually the simpler choice because backups, Photos, Drive, family sharing, and Apple-device restoration are in one account system. The 200 GB tier is a practical starting point for several devices; move to 2 TB when photo libraries and backups outgrow it.
Mixed-device household
Google One is often easier for a family using Android, iPhone, Windows, and web browsers. It keeps Photos, Drive, and Gmail under one cross-platform quota. An iPhone owner who needs full recovery should still retain iCloud Backup.
Google-services power user
If Gmail, Google Photos, and Google Drive are already your main tools, Google One avoids splitting storage across providers. Select a plan whose bundled AI features and price make sense for your account rather than paying for benefits nobody will use.
Privacy and smart-home focused Apple user
iCloud+ is the relevant option for Private Relay, Hide My Email, custom email domains, Apple Invites, and HomeKit Secure Video. Consider Advanced Data Protection separately and understand its exclusions before enabling it.
