To make iCloud Photos downloads proceed as quickly as possible, check Photos’ sync status, connect the device to reliable Wi‑Fi and power, and let syncing run without interruption. If you need full-resolution files stored locally, select Download Originals; Optimize Storage keeps smaller versions on the device while originals stay in iCloud. Apple says transfer time depends on library size and internet speed, but it does not publish a guaranteed download time or a setting that boosts transfer speed.
Why are my iCloud Photos taking so long to download?
A large photo and video library can take a long time to sync, and the connection speed matters. Apple Support says the time required depends on the size of the collection and internet speed. Its guidance does not promise a particular completion time or a way to make iCloud deliver files faster. Apple notes that a large library may need to sync overnight, depending on its size and Wi‑Fi speed. Apple’s iCloud Photos setup guidance and sync troubleshooting guidance explain these limits.

Check whether syncing is paused
Look at the library status in Photos before changing settings. It can show whether syncing is underway, paused, or needs attention. Follow any prompt displayed there.
- Recent iPhone and iPad versions: Open Photos, go to Collections, then tap the profile button.
- Older iPhone and iPad versions: Check the status in Library or All Photos.
- Mac: Open Photos, select Library and All Photos, then check the status at the bottom of the window.
Apple lists several conditions that can pause syncing: Low Data Mode, Low Power Mode, battery below 20 per cent, a poor network connection, performance or battery optimization, an overheated device, or full iCloud storage. Connect to Wi‑Fi and power, charge a low-battery device, and let an overheated device cool. If iCloud storage is full, address that issue; repeatedly switching iCloud Photos off and on is not Apple’s recommended response to a pause. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps.

Choose whether to keep full-resolution originals on the device
If your goal is a complete local copy, set Photos to download originals. This requires enough available storage on the device. If space is limited, optimized storage preserves more room by keeping smaller versions locally while full-resolution originals remain in iCloud.
On a Mac
- Open Photos and choose Photos > Settings > iCloud.
- Select Download Originals to this Mac to store full-size versions locally, or Optimize Mac Storage to conserve space.

On an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap iCloud, then Photos.
- Choose the option to download and keep originals if you need full-resolution files locally, or optimize storage if conserving device space matters more. The exact labels can vary by software version.
Apple’s iCloud Photos setup instructions describe the storage choices. Selecting download originals changes what the device keeps; it does not remove the need for a working connection, available storage, and time for the library to sync.
Download selected originals or keep a separate copy
You do not have to keep every original on your phone or computer to make a separate copy. On iPhone or iPad, Apple documents exporting selected items with Export Unmodified Originals and choosing an external storage device as the destination. On Mac, Photos can export selected items. Apple also recommends keeping a separate backup, such as on another drive. See Apple’s archive and copy instructions.

An external drive can provide space for exported originals or a backup, but Apple does not identify external storage as a way to speed up delivery from iCloud. Check that the drive and its connector are compatible with your device.
What to check on Windows
In iCloud for Windows, check the status indicator for upload or download progress. The download workflow depends on the installed version: Apple’s instructions for iCloud for Windows 11.1 and later describe optimized copies and opening an item to download its full version; older versions use a different workflow. Follow the instructions for your version rather than assuming every Windows installation has the same controls. Does “Sync Immediately” make downloads faster?
No. Apple describes Sync Immediately as an option to prioritize library uploads in version 27 or later of iOS, iPadOS, and visionOS. It is not a general download-speed control. Allowing cellular data for syncing may also increase data use. For slow downloads, use the Photos status and the pause checks above instead. See Apple’s iCloud Photos guidance.
