IBM’s history page separately identifies PMS 2718C as the Pantone reference for “IBM Blue.” Those are references from different IBM sources and should not be treated as interchangeable specifications.
IBM logo blue color codes
The most precise answer depends on which IBM document you mean. IBM’s technical third-party logo PDF labels one swatch “Blue 60”; IBM’s history page uses “IBM Blue” for a core palette color. Neither source reconciles the two Pantone references.

The sources do not establish a hex value for the specific logo sample. Avoid assigning a hex code by converting the PDF’s RGB values or by choosing an online color approximation and presenting it as IBM’s official specification.
Why are there two Pantone references?
IBM’s history page describes the color associated with the familiar 8-bar logo as “IBM Blue” and gives PMS 2718C. The third-party PDF gives the Blue 60 swatch as PMS 2132. These are different labels in different documents; the sources reviewed do not explain whether they represent a change, different applications, or another relationship. Keep the attribution with each value rather than claiming that one supersedes or equals the other.

IBM’s 8-Bar guidance describes blue and gray families as the core colors used for logo coloring and directs users to precise specifications. For production artwork, use the current approved IBM asset and its applicable guidance rather than trying to reconcile Pantone numbers yourself.
Choose the correct IBM logo version for the background
IBM supplies positive and reversed logo forms. They have subtle differences—including stripe weight and details in the letter counters—intended to preserve optical integrity on light and dark backgrounds. Use the supplied version intended for the background; do not simply invert or recolor the artwork.

IBM’s 8-Bar guidance calls for at least five palette “steps” of contrast between the foreground and background. Its strategic-partner guide gives these specific combinations:

For photography, the partner guide recommends simple, clear imagery with plenty of contrast. These are examples in that guide; use the current IBM asset and applicable IBM guidance for the specific application.

Use the 8-bar logo without altering it
IBM credits designer Paul Rand and says the basic 8-bar design has remained unchanged since 1972. Its 8-Bar design guidance specifies a clear-space margin equal to the logo’s height and prohibits changes to the mark’s construction or presentation.
- Do not stretch, compress, outline, or add a shadow or tagline to the logo.
- Do not change the bar direction, bar weight, letter spacing, or eight-bar construction.
- Do not place the mark inside a container shape or use gradients, mixed-color stripes, or colors outside the blue and gray families.
- Do not color individual letters differently from the rest of the mark.
Permission and trademark considerations
IBM states: “No other company may use IBM logos unless it has the express written permission of IBM, or is licensed by IBM to do so.” Its fair-use guidance concerns truthful, non-misleading text-only references to IBM trademarks and explicitly excludes logos. IBM’s 8-Bar page also gives a narrow U.S. instruction for official communications: a registered trademark must accompany one logo appearance. It recommends consulting local counsel for trademark guidance outside the United States. This is not a general permission to reproduce IBM artwork.
