A smart speaker can play music every day without giving you the sound you expect. The answer is not automatically a pricier speaker or a “lossless” badge: what reaches your ears depends on the recording, streaming settings, playback route, compatible hardware, network, room, and your own hearing and preferences. Here’s how to find the weak link before replacing anything.
Why a smart speaker can disappoint
“Sound quality” is the result of a chain, not a single specification. A high-resolution format cannot improve a recording or mix that does not suit your taste; a service setting cannot help if the selected track, speaker, app, or connection does not support it. Placement and the room also affect what you hear.

That makes a format label only one clue. Spotify describes Lossless as offering up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, but says multiple factors affect playback and that higher technical fidelity does not always create a dramatic audible difference. Its support page puts it plainly: “Lossless offers high technical fidelity, but it doesn’t always translate to a dramatically different listening experience for everyone.” (Spotify Support: Audio quality)
What “lossless” actually requires
Lossless playback depends on the specific track and service, your account, the speaker and controller, the chosen quality settings, the route used to send audio, and a stable connection. Spotify’s guidance is specific to Spotify: it recommends a steady 1.5–2 Mbps connection for its best lossless listening experience. That is not a universal bandwidth requirement for every service or device.
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
For Spotify, Lossless is available to Premium subscribers, but music videos, podcasts, and audiobooks are excluded. Spotify describes the maximum quality as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Sonos describes Spotify Lossless on compatible Sonos playback as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. Neither specification guarantees that every track, route, or device is playing at that quality.
Spotify Lossless on Sonos
On compatible Sonos products, Spotify Lossless requires Premium, a current Sonos app, and the option enabled in Spotify and for the Sonos product. Playback can be started through the Sonos app or Spotify Connect. Sonos says that selecting lossless for one Sonos product automatically enables it for other Sonos products in the household; the Sonos interface displays a Lossless badge when playback is active. S1-only products and the S1 controller app do not support Spotify Lossless. See Sonos Support: Listen to lossless audio from Spotify on Sonos.

Apple Music and HomePod
Apple documents playback of available Apple Music Lossless tracks on HomePod. Dolby Atmos support is model-specific and is not supported on HomePod mini, so don’t assume that every HomePod feature applies across the range. Consult Apple’s HomePod software version 27 guide for the documented details.

Sonos lists Era 300 and selected other products as spatial-audio capable. Grouping a non-compatible Sonos speaker switches playback to stereo, so adding another speaker can change the playback mode rather than extend spatial audio to every room. How to check whether lossless is actually playing
- Confirm the track and account. Check that the service offers the track in the target quality and that your subscription includes it. For Spotify Lossless, that means Premium; music videos, podcasts, and audiobooks are not included.
- Check the speaker and controller. Verify that the model and app support the feature. For Spotify Lossless on Sonos, S1-only products and the S1 controller app are not compatible.
- Inspect both quality settings. Look at the service’s audio-quality setting and any setting for the selected device. Spotify notes that quality for a third-party device may need to be changed while connected through Spotify Connect. On Sonos, check the device selection and quality menu, then look for the Lossless badge during playback.
- Check the route and network. Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX can differ in whether they support lossless. Check the route you are actually using and whether Wi-Fi is stable. Spotify’s steady 1.5–2 Mbps recommendation applies to its lossless listening experience, not to every service.
Why can’t I hear a difference?
It may be that lossless is not active, but a lack of an obvious change does not prove that something is broken. The track may use a similar-sounding master, the speaker or room may mask subtle differences, or the difference may simply not be meaningful to you. Spotify itself cautions that higher technical fidelity does not always sound dramatically different to everyone.
To make a fair personal comparison, use the same recording and version, match playback volume, keep the speaker in the same position, and replay a short passage. Change one variable at a time. This can help you judge whether you prefer one setting; it is not proof that everyone will hear the same result.

What to change before buying another speaker
Work through the settings, compatibility, and connection checks first. Then consider whether the limitation is the speaker itself or the way you want music to sound: a single-speaker setup, a stereo pair, and a spatial-audio system are different listening experiences. Room layout, placement, app convenience, service support, ecosystem fit, and budget all matter alongside format support.
